I think it is a great thing.

Some people on my FB clearly don't.

These women are upset about losing their jobs, but the attitude amongst some of the women on here is, who gives a s**t.

Sorry, I literally don’t care. Want a job in f1? Learn something about cars. Want to be a model or promo girl? Get a modelling or promo job.

I’ve been made redundant several times in my career. Surplus to requirements. Life goes on.

Els1e · 31/01/2018 20:44

I think it was outdated and time it went but do feel sorry for anyone losing their income.

WiseDad · 31/01/2018 20:45

aeroflotgirl. Yeah! Well put. Equal opportunities to choose. Most men would love to be F1 drivers or mechanics. Most women would rather do something, anything else. But the same standards apply.

Incidentally does anyone know the setting temp for marmalade? 105?

moreofaslummythanyummy · 31/01/2018 20:45

Yes chesty adult women can do what the hell they like, so can adult men. you have naked men advertising goods, escorts, strippers etc. Some of those on here are very patronising, and do put women off Feminism. It should be about educating girls that they can do any career they want, Pilot, Nurse, Engineer, waitress, the choice is theirs, not exercising control over their choices, that is not what Feminism should be about.

This 1000%

Sallystyle · 31/01/2018 20:48

Feminism is so much more than choice.

AssassinatedBeauty · 31/01/2018 20:48

No feminist(s) have dictated anything to anyone. This is a decision that Liberty Media (owners of F1) have come to themselves, for their own commercial reasons. They have not, as far as I'm aware, been subject to any kind of campaign or pressure to do this, from any kind of feminist or women's rights group.

troodiedoo · 31/01/2018 20:49

About time. If it was such a great job then the girls wouldn't need to supplement it with webcam work and wish list bullshit.

I find it hilarious that people are blaming "snowflakes" for this. In any big corporation money is the cause surely? Sponsors and advertisers not wanting to be associated with such an archaic practice.

chestylarue52 · 31/01/2018 20:49

@AssassinatedBeauty

Exactly, thank you.

It’s been done for commercial marketing reasons.

Just like when they ditched page 3.

Cherrycokewinning · 31/01/2018 20:49

Assassinated you’re being far too sensible. Of course it’s the feminatzis fault! Everything is don’t you know?

Julie8008 · 31/01/2018 20:50

I never hear women complaining when its a half naked man advertising diet coke.

chestylarue52 · 31/01/2018 20:51

Sponsors and advertisers know that more and more women watch sport. They’re adjusting accordingly. It’s all about the money.

TheBrilliantMistake · 31/01/2018 20:52

Aeroflotgirl, this is the problem many of us men have.

We want equality full stop, not just for women, but for all (race, age, creed etc), but we are also mindful that not every guy in the world wants that, and that men have tended to dominate and exploit women throughout history.

So when some women tell us 'these girls might think they are choosing of their own freewill, but it's the men who have created a society some women allow themselves to be objectified' (paraphrasing) - then where does that leave us? Damned if we say 'yeah go for it, it's your choice' and damned if we say 'hmm, we don't want to create a society that still applies pressure to women to be objectified, so let's ban it!'

gluteustothemaximus · 31/01/2018 20:52

I must admit though, I'm impressed with all the men on twitter standing up for 'women's rights'.

I assume they also stand up for women in other areas too, or is it just the scantily clad ones Hmm

NotACleverName · 31/01/2018 20:52

They have not, as far as I'm aware, been subject to any kind of campaign or pressure to do this, from any kind of feminist or women's rights group.

Right? But it's so much easier for people to try and pin this one on feminists trying to restrict other women's choices.

saladdays66 · 31/01/2018 20:53

Grid girls are a anachronism that have no place in a professional sport.

Completely agree. How many other sports can you think of that have an equivalent? And 'girls'. Urgh.

PerfectlyDone · 31/01/2018 20:53

I never hear women complaining when its a half naked man advertising diet coke.

Acterly, many of us do.

And anyway, two wrongs don't make a right, do they?

LizzieSiddal · 31/01/2018 20:53

I never hear women complaining when its a half naked man advertising diet coke.

Well quite, however the number of 'half naked' women used in advertising is about a million times more than men. So I wouldn't worry about the men just yet.

Cherrycokewinning · 31/01/2018 20:54

Well according to google there hasn’t been a Diet Coke man since 2013 which might explain why you don’t hear people complaining about it Hmm

“I must admit though, I'm impressed with all the men on twitter standing up for 'women's rights'.

This really made me laugh. So true

troodiedoo · 31/01/2018 20:55

Diet coke man probably didn't need to have sex with anyone for the job either.

TheBrilliantMistake · 31/01/2018 20:57

I don't think it's just about women watching F1 (thought that might be part of it). I think they know there's a real backlash against sexism and exploitation (rightly so), and they're in danger of adverse publicity and loss of sponsorship.

If anything, at least it shows F1 is very self-aware and highly conscious of the current public mood for anything remotely sexist (or perceived to be)

falang · 31/01/2018 20:58

I think it's pathetic. They weren't offensive, it was a job they wanted to do. Why shouldn't they have the right to choose to do it if they wanted to

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 31/01/2018 21:01

I personally can't stand the Chippendales and Dreamboys and the type of women who think it's OK to fawn lover them like pieces of meat, so the argument does work both ways, for me anyway and I suspect a good many women who frequent mumsnet.

TheBrilliantMistake · 31/01/2018 21:06

Falang, I don't think it's about those specific women. It's about the wider issue of why we need a scantily clad women performing no other function than to be looked at, at an event that has no relevance to that role.

Just because someone is willing to do something, it doesn't mean those willing can't be exploited. Sometimes, people can exploit your willingness!

It's like the people on Britain's Got Talent who aren't very good. They think they were given a chance to express themselves. In reality, they were just used to have people laughing at them for 'entertainment'.
