I think it is a great thing.

Some people on my FB clearly don't.

Sends a terrible message that men do and women decorate.

^^ THIS!!!

Thebluedog · 01/02/2018 10:37

@Woollypinksock

Being a grid girls isn't a proper job.

Why do you think it’s not a proper job?

DreamyMcDreamy · 01/02/2018 10:44

Yeah, course it does dreamy Hmm

No, come on, instead of a dismissive rolly eyes. Why are you conflating sexual acts with the jobs?

Thehairthebod · 01/02/2018 10:46

Why are you conflating sexual acts with the jobs?

Because she is questioning where 'free choice' ends. Both things mentioned are solely for the pleasure of men.

AngelsSins · 01/02/2018 10:46

Why are people acting like feminists created some law that banned these women? Feminists didn't make this choice, a bunch of men did, blame them if you're so upset by it.

sandgrown · 01/02/2018 10:47

I will go against the grain and say that when I was that age, if I had looked as good as those girls, I would have done it ! None of them look like they have been forced into it. I believe women should have to right to do what they want even if it is not everybody's choice.

Cocolepew · 01/02/2018 10:47

There's always been, and going to be, women who are so taken by their own looks/bodies that they like to parade around in skimpies being leered at by men. Or posing half naked in photos.
Just look at social media, it's full of young women pouting up at the camera with the camera pointing down their cleavage .

IrisAtwood · 01/02/2018 10:47

I am pleased that the grid girls have gone. While I can see the argument about individual women choosing a role, the reality is that the role has a much wider impact than solely for the woman making the choice.
The grid girl role normalises the objectification of women and perpetuates the idea that a woman’s worth is based on youth and beauty.
We have to balance individual rights against societal good and in this case I think it is a good decision.

mypoosmellsofroses · 01/02/2018 10:49

I can't find it now but I remember seeing a chart aimed at young people advising all the job opportunities in Motorsport, with silhouettes of people plus a brief job description.
There were only 2 female silhouettes, one wearing a knee length skirt (as in the standard toilet door type icon) which I think was for something like HR and then there was "PR" whose silhouette was wearing a much shorter skirt
Depressing as fuck to see, especially as it was aimed at young people .This idea that "flinty eyed feminists" are "banning" things they don't like being peddled by the media is deeply concerning - coupled with the increasing pornification of our culture, all feels a bit 1 step forward 2 steps back.

Woollypinksocks · 01/02/2018 10:49

Sorry to disappoint you thebluedog but I'm not going to get into a discussion with you over what constitutes a proper job.

Nobody can think of any good positive reason to have those girls parades around, other than 'because men likelooking at a bit of tits, arse and totty', that wouldn't be very PC so they're using the argument that they care about the women, losing their jobs.

Lambside · 01/02/2018 10:55

It's a great decision.
I hope the practice of having Young pretty women with big tits, wearing tiny outfits at darts events goes soon too.
I hate the way it keeps being called an intrinsic part of the sport.
It's just tits and ass for men's titillation.

DeleteOrDecay · 01/02/2018 10:57

Saw this on Twitter and thought they made a good point.

To ask what you think about 'Grid Girls' no longer being used?
theredjellybean · 01/02/2018 10:59

Stoneage.. No of course not. Violence or violent acts are criminal, against the law.

People of both sexes being employed in a legitimate role is different.

theredjellybean · 01/02/2018 11:01

If we want equality.. Can we have pecs and buns of steel for female titillation, or male and tits and arse for male titillation or female or a visual aesthetic for anyone...

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 01/02/2018 11:01

Why are people acting like feminists created some law that banned these women? Feminists didn't make this choice, a bunch of men did, blame them if you're so upset by it

Yep...would love that link

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 01/02/2018 11:05

They dont care about women losing their jobs

There is an m and s thread about 400 jobs to be potentially lost

Full time and part time jobs

Bit of sympathy on there obviously but not to the extent that it is on here!!

In fact im not sure i recognise too many names from there on this thread

Woollypinksocks · 01/02/2018 11:06

They're not even banned, F1 have simply decided to stop using them.

Sainsburys are making hundreds of redundancies, where's the outrage about that?

MoeSzyslaksTwinSister · 01/02/2018 11:09

@user1482573375 they've stopped the darts walk on girls as well.

Sorry if already mentioned not RTFT

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 01/02/2018 11:09

About fucking time.

TheLegendOfBeans · 01/02/2018 11:11

Sorry I know this is so wishy washy and weirdly put but here goes

I don’t know if I’d want my daughter to be a grid girl.
The travel, the fun, the excitement; great.
The parading about in skimpy garb: hmmm.

I love cycling. I feel a bit weird that they still use “dolly birds” at every podium - that’s 21 times during the TdF!
I want my daughter be a successful cyclist, it’s my secret dream. I know I’d be a bit disappointed if the only way she ended up at the TdF was as a podium girl.

But regardless of the prevailing view of the grid girls reinforcing sexism in the sport and the oppression of the patriarchy, I truly believe that it’s not necessarily the coup it’s being made out to be that the grid girls are being scrapped. The choice has been removed for these girls now. I think it’s a shame.

I dunno. I feel internally conflicted between theory and practice. I don’t like it when women are used as “dolly birds”; it just smacks of 1970s TOTP to me Shock BUT I defend the right to retain choice in these situations.

Urgh, so wordy.

DreamyMcDreamy · 01/02/2018 11:12

I believe women should have to right to do what they want even if it is not everybody's choice.

Well said.

TheLegendOfBeans · 01/02/2018 11:13

Oh my god @DreamyMcDreamy

My entire post in one sentence 😂

DreamyMcDreamy · 01/02/2018 11:15

Sorry to disappoint you thebluedog but I'm not going to get into a discussion with you over what constitutes a proper job

Well, that's convenient, isn't it. You must think there's a certain type of suitable jobs befitting for a lady out there and this isn't a proper one.

IsThisADream · 01/02/2018 11:16

I think they should have just made it 50/50 men and women - that would have been better and fairer.

Thehairthebod · 01/02/2018 11:17

The choice has been removed for these girls now.

But given that there aren't really 'grid boys' and 'walk on boys', men never really had the choice to do this sort of thing anyway. But no one (including men themselves who have been 'denied' this sort of career) seems to care about that?
