Aibu to never watch it again? How can that many people be so stupid?

They can all see the boy Jack reacted to the police man because of his learning difficulties but they send cops with guns???
You can see the lead detective has a chip on his shoulder, he is rude, brusque and lacking in empathy, jumps to conclusions and again noone else does anything.

Tilly the carer can see the girl has been raped and does nothing??
I have watched silent witness since it began, aibu or maybe im oversensitive raising a dd with asd but wtf??

Do staff in residential care facilities really talk to residents as if they are children like That?

Some do, and worse sometimes. Remember Winterbourne View? On film. And of course these rogue members of staff treat residents with utmost respect while the family/CQC are there. Whatever else they are, they're not stupid!

Devilishpyjamas · 31/01/2018 22:45

The problem as well is that when other staff report that sort of thing it is often ignored.

Safeguarding departments are overrun and unable to follow up everything in detail. The CQC has zero powers of investigation.

More about Thomas - all post Winterbourne www.blogistan.co.uk/blog/mt.php/2015/02/03/thomas-rawnsley-abuse-separation-unexplained-injuries-heart-attack

They also don't seem to understand what the word locum means when applied to doctors. If a doctor regularly is employed to come to a care home then he isn't a locum, he's the doctor for that care home. Locums are temporary doctors who stand in for other doctors if they're sick or on holiday.
The dodgy nonwhite locum doctor was such a cliche, but was sadly one of many in that story. All authority figures are "bad" unless they are pathologists. All disabled people are essentially "good".

Devilishpyjamas · 31/01/2018 23:00

I thought it showed that disabled people are vulnerable rather than ‘good’.

There’s also the Richard Handley inquest this week - being live tweeted. Another young man killed by poor care (not intentionally poor care as in some cases but devastating nonetheless).

retirednow · 31/01/2018 23:02

Theyre not the same since leo and harry left

DonkeyOil · 31/01/2018 23:12

I'll probably get slated for saying this, but I think most people are predisposed to believe that Care Homes are nice places on the whole, as the alternative would be incredibly hard to live with. My experience of Care Homes is that they are not nice places to be on the whole, especially for the most vulnerable - people who can't speak up if they are being mistreated/neglected or simply ignored, or don't have family/friends visiting regularly.

Many people are no doubt happy and well cared-for in Care Homes, but many are not. Whatever you think of the acting and writing on Silent Witness (not much!), the plot wasn't that far-fetched, imo.

retirednow · 31/01/2018 23:17

It was a ridiculous plot,

Devilishpyjamas · 31/01/2018 23:18

I agree donkey tbh. And I have personal experience and working experience of good care homes. Even in good ones people are very very vulnerable. Even when you visit pretty much every day (as I did) things happen - even when the staff team are largely caring, kind people.

With all the cuts it just gets worse. Richard Handley’s inquest is showing that. I’m sure many of the people caring for him were kind and caring people but the care he received was substandard and he died as a result.

RoseWhiteTips · 31/01/2018 23:26

It was a powerful piece of drama. Congratulations to all concerned.

HelenaDove · 31/01/2018 23:30

Devilish im so sorry to hear this.

2rebecca Historically disabled ppl in film have been portrayed as evil ...........Blofeld in the Bond films for instance, I know there are certain ppl who would prefer it stayed this way.........it makes the cuts to things like disability benefits more palatable.

I liked SW this week.

No one slags off The Handmaids Tale Margaret Atwood said each incident she wrote about actually happened but in different places around the world and she put it all in one novel

Its entirely possible that Silent Witness have done similar here.....interesting how everyone thinks this is too far fetched though.........

DonkeyOil · 31/01/2018 23:31

I'm so sorry your ds has had an awful experience Devilish. It only takes one or two poor staff members and a 'lax' culture in a Care Home regarding working practices, for bad things to happen. And why people can't seem to get their heads round the fact that sub-standard staff are going to behave differently in front of relatives and Inspectors, I just don't know!

Devilishpyjamas · 31/01/2018 23:36

TBH although there ended up being issues with my son’s home (complex ones which I won’t go into) it was excellent for most of the time he was there and most of the care he received was compassionate and good. Bad Things still happened. He is very vulnerable to that happening again - all I can hope is that every time it happens someone reports (he has 2:1 care so is theoretically less vulnerable than those receiving 1:1 - not sure whether you’ve seen the video circulating FB this week of a career hitting an elderly lady with dementia and telling her she stinks).

HelenaDove · 31/01/2018 23:37

"And why people can't seem to get their heads round the fact that sub-standard staff are going to behave differently in front of relatives and Inspectors, I just don't know"

the practice and expectation in the UK is to sell your home and move into a care home when old. Anyone who doesnt is accused of wanting to keep the inheritance for their children.

People are quite happy to keep this narrative and questioning what happens in some care homes threatens this narrative.

Devilishpyjamas · 31/01/2018 23:38

And the CQC can do nothing until problems are screaming at them. I can see exactly how Winterbourne happened and I am not remotely confident it won’t happen again.

Devilishpyjamas · 31/01/2018 23:39

I am incredibly grateful to the staff who did report incidentally.

HelenaDove · 31/01/2018 23:40

I posted about my parents needing a stairlift fitted which would help them and was immediately asked why they wouldnt consider a care home.

Devilishpyjamas · 31/01/2018 23:40

Helena - I saw a tweet saying that was the case (that each incident did happen - just not in one place!)

Devilishpyjamas · 31/01/2018 23:40

God tbat’s awful Helena Sad

HelenaDove · 31/01/2018 23:42

a friend of mine was working in a home that Panorama filmed in (not Winterbourne and she wasnt involved in any of the incidents)

HelenaDove · 31/01/2018 23:43

Interesting Devilish Confirms what i already thought People not wanting to believe this in the same way as Handmaids Tale.........

............to quote Clarissa..........because they are disabled.

Devilishpyjamas · 31/01/2018 23:45

Yup

BelleandBeast · 31/01/2018 23:45

The story lines are getting ever so bizarre, what happened to forensics cracking regular cases with expert attentio to detail? The end of the last series was just too much.

Do forensic scientists always go with the Police, Jack seems to be on around a lot? And what happened to his new girlfriend? And the American guy (he was rather lovely to look at) yes he went away but its like he never happened and Nikki has forgotten him already.

HelenaDove · 31/01/2018 23:49

Best bit Devilish is that my dad is still working at 81. i got accused of wanting to "secure my inheritance"

Nothing to do with it. They want to be in the house they have had since 1968 the house they brought me and DB up in. where they are happy..............all they need is a stairlift.

What makes me laugh are the ones making these kinds of comments are the ones using terms like "property ladder" My parents are still in the first house they ever bought. Because they bought it to make into a home.

HelenaDove · 31/01/2018 23:53

"yes he went away but its like he never happened and Nikki has forgotten him already"

A positive portrayal of a woman getting on with her job instead of mooning over a man?!
