to ask what is banned from packed lunches at your school?

My children don't believe me that some schools have banned cheese, eggs, ham, white bread etc. DS1 is 15 and still butthurt about the dinner lady who took away his single square of chocolate on his 6th birthday.

So are there such draconian rules out there? Or is it urban myth?

Just nuts here. I was under the impression that they were only allowed water to drink but the dd mentioned juice cartons the other day, so perhaps it’s just fizzy drinks that are frowned on Confused

angelnix · 30/01/2018 20:10

Nuts, fizzy and energy drinks. They encourage a healthy lunchbox, but can't run complain about cake etc when they serve great slabs of it drenched in custard from the school kitchen!

MrGrumpy01 · 30/01/2018 20:10

Thankfully in our case, nothing. DS (asd) takes a packet of fruit flakes and a tiny bar of chocloate (they very mini kinders) We have at least moved on from the solitary fromage frais.

Fizzy drinks are pretty much a no-no though.

TheCrossKeys · 30/01/2018 20:10

Fizzy drinks
Sugary, sweetened drinks
Glass bottles
Hot food (e.g., flask of soup) and food that needs to be heated
All chocolate items, including things like Club bars
Cake, including homemade
Sweets
Crisps
Cereal bars

To give some balance, on the school dinner menu for this week are the following items

  • chicken wraps served with tortilla chips (aka, crisps)
  • chocolate brownie in chocolate custard
  • glass of orange juice (from concentrate) and a chocolate crispy cake
MollyWantsACracker · 30/01/2018 20:11

Crisps
Fizzy drinks
Sweets/treats/chocolate

They are allowed bring a small treat in the lunchbox on Friday

DownstairsMixUp · 30/01/2018 20:12

Only squash. Ds lunch box is always ok tho, sandwich, mini cheese, yoghurt, cucumber sticks and some blueberries with a small cake. Only once have I let him have a treat lunch box (I was not well) which was two slices of papa johns pizza with a carton of apple juice and a chocolate bar, the School didn't say anything! Grin

Leeds2 · 30/01/2018 20:13

I've never heard of white bread being banned before. Or cheese or ham.

DoubleNegativePanda · 30/01/2018 20:14

Nothing. Not even peanuts!

cliffdiver · 30/01/2018 20:15

Sweets
Fizzy drinks
Nuts

Also sesame products in reception.

switswoo81 · 30/01/2018 20:16

Nuts, fizzy drinks, popcorn, crisps all treat food (cakes, chocolate etc) Allowed one small treat on a Friday. Kids in my class just bring sandwich or crackers , yoghurt and fruit. Very strict parents never send in other foods.

ByeGermsByeWorries · 30/01/2018 20:17

Fizzy drinks, sugary drinks, crisps, sweets, chocolate bars and biscuit bars, chocolate spread, nuts, biscuits, the usual suspects.

iveburntthetoast · 30/01/2018 20:18

Just nuts

TallulahBetty · 30/01/2018 20:18

Nothing that I know of! Confused DD has school dinners so never had to worry about it, but I'm guessing everyone would have a letter/email, Or it'd be on the website?

RavenWings · 30/01/2018 20:22

I think banned stuff includes crisps/chocolate/cake etc except on Fridays (and before someone says it, no our cafeteria lunch kids don't get dessert of any kind). Nuts, fizzy drinks, squash and glass containers are always banned. Kids are not allowed to ask for packed food to be heated.

MaureenSowerbutts · 30/01/2018 20:32

Now my dds are both in high school it seems the government no longer cares if they are obese.

Nothing is banned at their school and they sell all manner of crap Grin

headintheproverbial · 30/01/2018 20:35

Chocolate, biscuits, cakes, all drinks except plain water and nuts.

Hippadippadation · 30/01/2018 21:17

DD doesn't have packed lunches yet but I only know of nuts.

Spoog1971xx · 31/01/2018 16:30

Linda McCartney vegan sausages! Bloody fuming. They are quite happy to provide Class 1 carcinogens on the menu everyday though.

sinceyouask · 31/01/2018 16:33

Glass bottles, tin cans and packets of sweets. Fine with me.

Beamur · 31/01/2018 16:41

Sweets, not sure about anything else. DD has been taking packed lunch for the whole time at school without comment. A Mum with kids younger than mine asked if we'd had a letter from school about healthy packed lunches, we hadn't, so I suggested maybe it was just being sent to families in that year. Not sure if it was this, or just to specific families but I didn't want to embarrass her.
Nuts are allowed, as are crisps, they have suggested sugar free squash when asking for items to be sent in for events or activities, but don't reject the 'wrong' ones. I avoid aspartame if I can.

ReinettePompadour · 31/01/2018 16:49

Crisps
Chocolate
Nuts
Cakes
Biscuits/Muffins
Yogurt (muller corner type ones, they can have fromage frais though)
Nutella
Sweets/haribos/lollipops
Fizzy drinks
Milkshake
Squash

Theres probably other stuff too but we dont usually find out until you've sent it in and had it confiscated by the dinner ladies. Hmm

Grumpants · 31/01/2018 16:55

Humas which is annoying. A child has an allergy so fair anough really.
Nuts due to allergies again
Probably fizzy drinks but I dont remember actually seeing that anywhere.
Our school is quite relaxed but then I can’t actually imagine anyone turning up with a can of coke and last nights takaway as the pta is far to competitive in the parenting and it’s small and gossipy.

Exiguous · 31/01/2018 16:56

Nothing.

Exiguous · 31/01/2018 16:57

My DD is very allergic to peanuts but the school hasn't banned them. They have nut-free tables for those who want to sit at them. She sits with other kids who are eating PBJs and they know to be careful.

anyoldname76 · 31/01/2018 16:58

fizzy pop, full size chocolate bars and sweets
