To not give neighbor internet password?

NegansDollFace · 29/01/2018 21:21

I’ve lived at my current address for 3 years, 4 in November 2018. The house next door is split into two flats, one upstairs and one down. So I’ve never been particularly close to my next door neighbors. We exchange (limited) pleasantries if we see each other and they’ve taken in a parcel for me once and I for them a few times. They work night times and there’s a bit of a language barrier so we legitimately don’t have any relationship beyond polite.

Tonight when I was at our local supermarket when I saw neighbor from the upstairs flat, I smiled an acknowledged him but moved to go to the self checkout. He followed and began a conversation asking how I was, fine, fine but when I ask him how he is he tells me not so good. He goes onto explain that downstairs neighbors have moved out and took their internet with them. I can already see where this is going so he asked if he could have my WiFi password and that he was willing to pay for it. I was put on the spot so I told him I’d speak to him when I’m home.

I’m home now and really am hoping the fact that I haven’t gotten back to him will speak for itself. What would you all say/do? I have incredibly bad social anxiety and I’m very awkward in these situations. Am I BU to just tell him no? And feel like he’s being cheeky? Surely if he shared internet with the flat below they’d have told him they were moving so he’d have time to get a different provider? Also if he’s willing to pay to use mine wouldn’t it just be easier to get his own installed?

I wonder if your router has a log on it that would record activity such as 'password changed'? Your provider might know. Would be an easy way to show them to be lying.

NegansDollFace · 01/02/2018 17:00

DD said she peaked over the wall when she’d been wandering between our garden and hallway. Our wall’s are tiny. For an adult they’d maybe come up to your waist.

And if it does don't change your password, not until you've offered to show the log to the agent or police. It's not court standard but it does back you up.

YouTheCat · 01/02/2018 17:02

Have you logged this with 101 yet? They have harassed your child as well as you.

UpstartCrow · 01/02/2018 17:04

I think you are winning this one, NegansDollFace, and we're all cheering you on. with a bit of luck you;ll be getting new neighbours.

There are a couple of reasons why people cant get internet. It could be bad credit or an unpaid bill, but it could also be they have a conviction.
You or the agent could check that with the local police, using Sarah's Law.

ForgivenessIsDivine · 01/02/2018 17:06

Good for you.. hope things get better and the wall hammering stops.

123MothergotafleA · 01/02/2018 17:07

They sound like criminals to me alright.
They will not stop until they get what they want.

mathanxiety · 01/02/2018 17:07

The OP is not on the hook for lying here.

BabooshkaBabooshka · 01/02/2018 17:07

What kind of fucking idiot asks a 6 year old kid for a password that the parent has refused to give out and then makes up a complete lie to the letting agency. These people are seriously screwed up. They seem to come from another planet where social norms don't apply. Really really odd behaviour. They have no shame. Bloody cheek, I would be fuming if were you.

mathanxiety · 01/02/2018 17:09

OP, does your router have a sticker on it with the network name and password on it? If yes, peel it off and keep it somewhere safe that is always with you. I would not put it past these people to break in and try to find it.

NegansDollFace · 01/02/2018 17:14

Haven’t reported it yet. Sis wants me to wait a day or so to see what they do and if they do indeed get worse before reporting. She’s afraid things will get much worse if I report them. We’re hoping the talk from the agent will spook them.

Yes my router had a little sticker with the password and login.

Involving a 6 year old! Shock I am speechless.

AHungryMum · 01/02/2018 17:17

Confused these people are lunatics!! Why are they going to such lengths to get your password for the sake of saving themselves what - £15 a month maybe? Or even less?!

Ellie56 · 01/02/2018 17:17

And change the password.

LexieLulu · 01/02/2018 17:19

Just for your own safety, change your password from the one on the box.

Any computer whizzes here? Can you see if there are other connections to your WiFi?

Justwaitingforaline · 01/02/2018 17:20

Change the password and report to 101, OP. This is getting ridiculous now.

Actually I did kinda think they wouldn't respond to logic.

I had nightmare neighbours and complained to the letting agency, they weren't actually very helpful. Council weren't good either. Police were utterly brilliant.

Unfortunately the neighbours will probably make things up, stand firm, get everything logged

Springtrolls · 01/02/2018 17:22

That is shocking.
Yes change the password just in case these lunatics try and coerce your dd to read it to them.

SleepFreeZone · 01/02/2018 17:24

My god they are nutters aren’t they 😱

mathanxiety · 01/02/2018 17:25

Do take that sticker off. If you keep any notebook with passwords or account numbers in it and you can't do without it, put that in a bag that you always take with you. Don't leave utility bills lying around.

I think things have gone as far as they should go, with the approach to your DD.

You never know, the police may already have a file on one or other of them, and this may be taken very seriously indeed.

BertieBotts · 01/02/2018 17:30

It is very easy to see which devices are logged into your router. Use the admin login as stated on the sticker or Google admin settings on Virgin router (replace with your Internet provider). One of the options shows logged in devices. You can kick unknown ones out or block them.

BertieBotts · 01/02/2018 17:30

Defo change admin access password too!

baublesnbubbles · 01/02/2018 17:33

I can't believe the lengths they are going to to get your internet. Surely it would be easier for them to just get their own st this stage. This is bonkers

londonrach · 01/02/2018 17:34

Change passport, remove router sticker. Good luck op
