Help? Nobody I know has even heard/watched it and I need to share the obsession with somebody!!

Preposterous, humourless film, pompous, over-produced soundtrack.

IamMummyhearmeROAR · 04/02/2018 14:21

Ahh my people! My dds and I love it! The tattooed man follows me on Twitter. We went to see movie again yesterday and I tweeted him to tell him. Gave me a thrill when he responded. It's the best movie I've seen in years

IamMummyhearmeROAR · 04/02/2018 14:22

Watch out! Someone's here to piss on our popcorn!

fruityb · 04/02/2018 14:22

I haven’t even seen the film and I’m fixated!

athingthateveryoneneeds · 04/02/2018 14:23

14yo DD has been listening to the soundtrack on loop for days now. I think we need to go see it again...

AntArcticFox · 04/02/2018 14:25

For anyone who didn't know Wolverine could sing : Hugh Jackman made a good job of Curly in Oklahoma years ago on stage. There's a film of the theatrical performance. It's on the web no doubt!

redfairy · 04/02/2018 14:31

If anyone is Midlands based the Resortsworld cinema is showing Greatest Showman Sing-a-longs Grin

I don't mind preposterous. Musicals are inherently preposterous.

I watched a couple of clips of Fame yesterday with my kid to explain the whole dancing in the traffic thing we had seen referenced somewhere else. Now that was a musical well-knitted into a reality but even there the stopping the traffic and the lunch time jamming was slightly overdone.(I'd forgotten just how fantastic Irene Cara was by the way!)

KatyMac · 04/02/2018 15:03

She was - I loved the Kids from Fame too and Glee!

It's all about feel-good - pick your musical and you can have pretty much any emotion you want

Thirtyrock39 · 04/02/2018 20:08

Our fave in this house is 'the other side ' zac Efron fans here

Figgygal · 04/02/2018 20:12

From now on is my fave But been on steaming to soundtrack for a month now and still love it

Am taking my 6 year old to the singalong showing on 25th he's loving the songs too I tried to convince he wouldn't enjoy it but he isn't having any of it.

Figgygal · 04/02/2018 20:13

Funnily enough I love it all despite it's faults it's not Laurence of Arabia but it's bloody entertaining

PinkSnowAndStars · 04/02/2018 20:19

This is the greatest show!

debbs77 · 04/02/2018 20:21

It's outstanding!

I saw it at the cinema last week, was alone in the cinema for ages and was super happy about it until a family turned up late! But anyway, at one point I almost applauded!!!!

Went straight to HMV and brought the soundtrack. Now totally obsessed with the songs and watching YouTube videos avout it

Ginpasta · 04/02/2018 21:14

Loved this film & the soundtrack!

Systemoverload99 · 04/02/2018 22:40

Saw the film today and have been playing the soundtrack ever since!

CarolineForbes · 05/02/2018 22:39

Thanks for your enthusiasm ladies. It convinced me I needed to see it immediately so I went on my first ever solo cinema outing this evening. LOVED the film. It’s amazing!
Bought the album before I’d even walked out of the cinema! Definitely want to see it again Grin

debbs77 · 06/02/2018 22:42

I literally cannot get the songs out of my head.

My children are all singing the songs too x

KatyMac · 08/02/2018 14:20

I went for a second time today (I took DH - he loved it too & wants to learn the dance routines)

He was singing along by the middle of each song!

AntArcticFox · 08/02/2018 17:44

I still haven't seen it. But I have been playing the soundtrack and yes, the rest of the family are humming it too!

Musicalmistress · 08/02/2018 17:47

Me & DD2 are your people too. Saw it over Christmas and completely loved it!

LoafEater · 08/02/2018 17:57

I love the film and the soundtrack is amazing. We are singing This is Me at the Choir I'm in to perform at our summer show, where there will be 50 of us blasting it out. I cannot wait as even in rehearsal where we haven't fine-tuned it, it sounds incredible- such a fantastic song.

KatyMac · 08/02/2018 21:01

I've been thinking about "What makes it so special" - a few things I think (baring in mind I know nothing about music really and don't really use words well)

It's "feel-good"

The choreography is superb (the bar scene with the shot glasses - tying it in to popular drinking culture)

The songs are melting the best of
the greatest show feels Queen (Radio Gaga for the beat?) & somehow Robbie Williams
Tightrope/A million Dreams Abba but also Disney Channel for the ease of singing
this is me womens anthems like Respect & other ones I can't immediatley think of
Eyes Wide Open feels 90s but I can't think of the band it reminds me of
From Now On (irish?/Folk?)
Rewrite the stars goes back to Disney Channel stuff (HSM the start of something new)

Disney stuff (& abba for that matter) is easy to sing so people like it

It's come at a time when we are all quite concerned about the state of the world - I think I'm drawing parallels between the start of the films/musicals in the late 20s & 30s after the great depression which brings us back to "feel-good"

Combined with the idea that or what they look like - we are accepting now; that people aren't excluded for who they are - which means that Barnum's circus couldn't exsist now (negated by Britains Got Talent et al)

Which is probably a load of claptrap but somehow it made me want to write it Hmm

AntArcticFox · 09/02/2018 09:10

That was great summary Katy!
I've been reading online reviews which are interesting as the majority of the critics' views were negative; Variety was a positive one.
The music is infectious but I think I will like A Million Dreams long term.
I'm pencilled in to finally see it at the weekend!
