To think young sheldon will give many people the rage

He can be irritating as an adult in Big Bang theory but the of a show based around him as a kid has made me blink.

I cannot see it being funny. I can really see it being very ragey with a precocious child.

I would also probably feel cross that he wasn't offered the help he needed as a child.

yes I'm aware it's just a program and I don't have to watch it. It's my irrational rant of the dayGrin

Drivemecrazy, and I find Howard and Bernadette annoying. I do like Raj though. I love Amy and Penny's friendship. As you say it is funny how we all see different things. Maybe that is what makes it successful, if they were all bland and everyone liked them all it might be boring?

HoppingPavlova · 30/01/2018 02:03

I also think adult Sheldon does the autistic community a huge disservice. Most autistic individuals aren't necessarily like Sheldon and it fails to present the condition in a fair manner in my view.

I don't understand this? Can you explain?

It has never been stated that Sheldon has any form of autism so not sure what the character has to live up to in this regard in the first place.

It's also pretty typical to know people like Sheldon. Not only do I have an exact replica but some of their friends are also replicas (all diagnosed Aspies before they became lumped in with the spectrum). I have also gone to school, uni and worked with people who are exactly like him. You may or may not be surprised at the number of consultants, surgeons, anaesthetists etc of my generation (in my 50's) who could pass as Sheldon very easily. Like Sheldon they don't have any diagnosis but anyone and everyone who comes across them knows they are 'different' or 'quirky'. Patients will often miss all the other quirks and just focus on the absence of any bedside manner. That's why watching Sheldon is great, never been said that they have any diagnosis but he is a composite of so many of the great quirky people that surround us, whether those people have a diagnosis or not.

Looking forward to it. Hopefully it will be a role model for academic children. At the moment it seems all we get is TV with idiot meat heads. in the lead. About time someone intelligent was on TV.

Slanetylor · 30/01/2018 02:36

After a poor start with Dumb Penny I fell in love with TBBT when the 3 women were allowed be witty and have their own story lines. Amy's personality has now bandaged and she is only an extension of Shelton's character and I HATE HATE HATE that he refuses to give her a satisfying sex life and that her sexual frustration is played for laughs. I'm not enjoying the latest series at all.

Slanetylor · 30/01/2018 02:37

Bandaged!!!? = disappeared. Sorry, I don't know what happened there.

IamSerena · 30/01/2018 02:42

I'm almost up to date with it and I have to admit I almost gave up after 2 episodes but I persevered and I'm glad I did. I especially love young Sheldon's relationship with his Meemaw Smile

CrazyExIngenue · 30/01/2018 05:00

*'The writers have never actually said that Sheldon has autism have they?'

And is gay.*

People seem to be confusing the actor who plays Sheldon (Jim Parsons) with the character of Sheldon as the writers envisage him.

Let's clarify:

Jim Parson's is gay. Sheldon is not.

Jim Parson's is inspired by people with Asperger's when he acts out the character of Sheldon. Much like Johnny Depp channels Keith Richards when he acts as Captain Jack Sparrow. That doesn't mean the actual character of Sheldon has Asperger's in terms of storyline and character development anymore than Captain Jack Sparrow will start playing guitar for the Rolling Stones and develop a roaring heroin habit.

Also as an FYI, there's a lot of debate about the similarities between Asperger's, Autism and people with very high intelligence. If Sheldon is based off anyone, I would say he's based off Albert Einstein and Sir. Issac Newton, who were both known for the eccentric behavior, however did most likely NOT have autism or Asperger's, rather they just operate on a level above us average intelligence Joe's.

Ive watched them all online already from America and they are amazing.
Iain Armitage is so sweet and endearing and the kids playing his brother and sister are brilliant too
Dont knock it till you've seen it

slightlybefuddledlibrarian · 30/01/2018 05:13

It’s very sweet. I love meemaw. It would have been easy to make her into a grandma stereotype - she’s the complete opposite of everything I imagined from TBBT.

Drivemecrazy1974 · 30/01/2018 05:34

Slanetylor - I disagree with you about Amy's personality disappearing. In fact, I think there have been occasions where Sheldon's had to realise that she is her own woman and other people see her that way too. One that springs to mind is when Sheldon's visiting her and they go out for dinner and it's her that is the focus of the conversation, not him.
Also, I think he is starting to be more sensitive to her likes and dislikes - the Little House on the Priarie meal that he threw for her, the fact that he didn't want to go through with their wedding at the courthouse so that they could have a big do. He is starting to change as a character too.
I agree with the sex thing too, but I think that's slowly starting to change and I see that changing even more in the future.
I think Amy's good for Sheldon, although we were rewatching the episodes with Stephen Merchant last night and I do think it would have been funny if he'd appeared in a few more with her!

Drivemecrazy1974 · 30/01/2018 05:38

Slightlybefuddledbrain - I love the Meemaw character in Young Sheldon too, but it took a while to get used to this version after seeing the Meemaw that appeared in TBBT a while back. They're like 2 different characters.
The Meemaw in Young Sheldon is so sassy and sharp witted. I think she's brilliant, and very well played. The character in TBBT was very much like a traditional grandmother, I thought. But I guess, considering Young Sheldon is based 29-30 years in the past, that everybody gets older and changes....

Drivemecrazy1974 · 30/01/2018 05:39

Sorry, that should have said slightlybefuddlelibrarian (very early in the morning!)

UkuleleRose · 30/01/2018 06:22

It's a great show - much more like the Wonder Years than the typical sitcom. And I didn't expect to like it at all. The cast is uniformly excellent.

Drivemecrazy1974 · 30/01/2018 06:59

UkeleleRose - you've hit the nail on the head there! The actors they've chosen are perfect for their roles. It seems as if they really took their time picking the cast, and it's paid off brilliantly.

TheHungryDonkey · 30/01/2018 07:15

I’ve only watched a few episodes of BBT. I have no opinion. My son quite likes it. He also likes Sherlock, Bones and Benedict Cumberbatch films because he generally plays ‘quirky’ interesting characters.

He can relate to them. He has Aspergers but hasn’t equated that to the characters also being ‘quirky’ too.

It doesn’t do the autism community a disservice because autism is a wide ranging spectrum. I’m pleased he can watch fiction on TV with characters he can relate to.

The lady has a moustache comment is exactly the kind of thing I’ve spent years educating against saying. It’s very difficult to teach tact.

Booboostwo · 30/01/2018 07:33

I watched a couple of episodes and gave up, it really missed the mark. I thought it was portraying quirkiness or difference for the audience's entertainment, it had no insight into what it might be like to be a person who is different or to live with a person who is different.

Atypical, on the other hand, succeeds where this fails. It is insightful, sensitive and presents both the love and the frustration felt by all the characters.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 30/01/2018 07:50

By the way ‘the good doctor’ might be another interesting watch.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 30/01/2018 07:52

Atypical was extremely triggering for me as a sibling of a man with autism. Horrible mum that I want to punch in the face and situations too close to home that I had to give up.

MadisonAvenue · 24/02/2018 12:06

I watched the first episode on Thursday and really enjoyed it. I agree with those who say that the cast is excellent and I love how they've cast Laurie Metcalfe's daughter as Mary, she's so like her mother.

Helpimfalling · 24/02/2018 12:08

@YerAuntFanny Shelton's exactly like my son too so will be an interesting watch since my son is nine

Louiselouie0890 · 24/02/2018 13:26

I've watched most of it. Most presumptions are incorrect

Birdsgottafly · 24/02/2018 15:19

My fear was that the Characters wouldn't be consistent with TBBT. I loved TBBT until Sheldon got something wring about Doctor Who and realised how creepy all the Male characters were. I still watch it.

What was disappointing was the Bitcoin episode, because Sheldon's action were unbelievable and that was what TYS was up against, but if they've don't it well then I'm looking forward to it.

Drivemecrazy1974 have you seen every episode? Meemaw is sassy and straight talking, if not rude in most of her episodes, especially to Amy.

user1490607838 · 24/02/2018 15:26

I have no idea whose idea this programme was, but the big bang theory is a bunch of predictable cliched claptrap, and I have never 'got' why it's been so popular and successful.

I would not even give this 'Young Sheldon' shite the time of day. It looks naff and ridiculous.

BrainlessDailyMail · 24/02/2018 15:31

I quite liked Jim Parsons in Hidden Figures when he played a straight up mild arsehole. That was believable. It alarms me that people want SC to have ASD; the many male scientists-mathmeticians-academics I know with ASD (acknowledged or probably) are kind, generous, thoughtful, can be charming, often gifted in other areas. Whereas, SC is very consistently, utterly foul & ridiculous.

anxious2017 · 24/02/2018 15:35

I have no idea why people come on forums like this and slate television shows when they haven't seen them. Also when people have completely different tastes.

If you don't like BBT, don't watch it. It's a really simple concept.

I've seen the whole series of Young Sheldon. I thought it was very well done, the little actor is fantastic and it moved me to tears at points.

I also like BBT. It's just nice, gentle comedy that is easy to watch and makes me smile. In a world where so many shows these days include mindless violence, highly distressing content and things like Love Island exist, BBT is great for someone like me with anxiety who would like more things to watch where I don't have to worry about what they'll show.

Of course, I'm also aware that some people like mindless violence and distress, so to suggest that it's all drivel and I'd rather rip my eyes out would make me sound like a dick. People are different.
