To think young sheldon will give many people the rage

He can be irritating as an adult in Big Bang theory but the of a show based around him as a kid has made me blink.

I cannot see it being funny. I can really see it being very ragey with a precocious child.

I would also probably feel cross that he wasn't offered the help he needed as a child.

yes I'm aware it's just a program and I don't have to watch it. It's my irrational rant of the dayGrin

There is a blonde character called Penny VladmirsPoutine, she started off being portrayed as a bit stupid but as the series progressed got much wiser and has quite a touching relationship with Sheldon.

HoppingPavlova · 29/01/2018 12:25

I’m really looking forward to watching it. I understand that Sheldon does not have a diagnosis that has been stated on the show but I have a teen with Aspergers who is an EXACT clone of Sheldon. They also love watching TBBT as they like Sheldon, to them he is ‘normal’. They don’t find him at all funny or quirky, they think he is completely normal. They also enjoy watching Bones and Doc Marten as they also find the main characters in those to be normal i.e. unlike all the other ‘weird people’ (that would be us normal folk) they have to deal with in life.

So I will be very intrigued to see whether young Sheldon is also the same as mine when they were young or not.

Annwithnoe · 29/01/2018 12:27

I haven’t seen it yet but I question the comedic value of a show about a child with special needs.
The homophobia in Friends is very dated now, as is the misogynistic slut shaming in Frasier.
Maybe we need to laugh openly at these things first in order to work out why it’s not a laughing matter?

mrsBeverleyGoldberg · 29/01/2018 12:35

Ds1 likes it because he has Aspergers and has a successful person with Aspergers (Sheldon,) is on tv. He laughs because he understands Sheldon's point of view. It's a relief to me because it's a starting point to be able to discuss autistic traits.
But I can see why neurotypical people would find it uncomfortable because Sheldon isn't like them. This is how Michael MacIntyre became so popular as neurotypicals recognise themselves in his stories.

PositivelyPERF · 29/01/2018 12:38

Has Michael MacIntyre Aspergers? I never knew that.

crazycatgal · 29/01/2018 12:41

It isn't a show about a child with special needs. Sheldon doesn't have autism. Jim Parsons has said that he has drawn on some traits that some people with Aspergers have when playing Sheldon.

DollyMcDolly · 29/01/2018 12:42

I’m looking forward to it. I don’t understand people being so critical when they haven’t actually watched it though

mrsBeverleyGoldberg · 29/01/2018 12:42

No. I meant that he points out the weird and funny things neurotypicals do, people without Aspergers. Neurotypicals find it funny as they can recognise themselves. Sheldon's character points out the weird and funny things people with Aspergers do. People with Aspergers find it funny as they can recognise themselves,

halfwitpicker · 29/01/2018 12:45

Rather watch dad's army.

Sparklingbrook · 29/01/2018 12:46

Dads Army? Where did that come from? Grin Like comparing apples and oranges.

PositivelyPERF · 29/01/2018 12:48

Ah, that makes sense Mrs

Butkin1 · 29/01/2018 12:56

I watched 3 or 4 episodes on a plane recently (we all love BBT). I really enjoyed it and I don't think you should judge until you've seen some episodes. It's really well done and so funny..

In BBT everybody loves Sheldon and cares for him despite his quirks - he's an uplifting character..

Redpony1 · 29/01/2018 13:08

I am amazed it's so popular and has lasted so long. Awful programme

It's brilliant IMO. I can watch it over and over, laughing every time.

I am really looking forward to the Sheldon series coming out!

NerrSnerr · 29/01/2018 13:10

@petbear it’s almost like people find different things funny isn’t it? Life would be boring if we all liked the same things.

JAMMFYesPlease · 29/01/2018 13:27

I find it funny. But i take comedy shoes just as shows. The only shows i tend to get irate at if theyre done badly are those designed to raise awareness or share history that then purposely changes events.

Meemaw and the dad are great together and wee Missy has some of the best one liners. Maybe I'm biased as interviewed one of the actresses that plays one of the teachers and she was an absolute gem and even sent me a thank you card even though the interview was just part of my job.

WorldPeasAndSweetcorn · 29/01/2018 13:52

I also think adult Sheldon does the autistic community a huge disservice.

Don’t get me started...

PositivelyPERF · 29/01/2018 13:54

But i take comedy shoes whatever rocks your boat, JAMMFYesPlease 😂

grannytomine · 29/01/2018 17:17

I love Leonard.

coldcanary · 29/01/2018 17:25

When I first saw it advertised I couldn’t help but think it was going to be like one of those god awful Nick/Disney shows like Jesse, full of stereotypes and annoying overacting kids. The young lad playing Sheldon does seem to be quite good though from the little I've seen so as a family of TBBT fans we’re going to at least give it a go.
I actually turned off the first episode of Big Bang half way through the first time I saw it!

BoneyBackJefferson · 29/01/2018 17:29

petbear

So what comedy would you recommend?

JellySlice · 29/01/2018 17:38

Hadn't heard about this, but will be interested to see it. BBT has been extremely useful in our family. We have a teenage Sheldon-clone (with somewhat better social skills) and a teenage Amy-clone. The Amy-clone identifies with Sheldon. Very confusing. However, when we are struggling to explain to our dc why what they are doing is out of sync with society's expectations, BBT often provides clearer examples.

Sometimes I'll just quirk an eyebrow at ds, he'll pause, and then say "Sheldon?", and that's all it takes for him to realise that he is heading off at a tangent to the rest of us.

Drivemecrazy1974 · 29/01/2018 17:38

Coldcanary - I also disliked the first episode of TBBT - in fact, it took me at least until half way through to start to enjoy it - however, I think you're going to like Young Sheldon.
What I will say is that the humour is quite different. It's definitely a different pace and a lot gentler but it is still really good.
In fact, I have an order in which I like to watch my programmes each week and Young Sheldon is now the last one I watch, meaning it's my favourite at the moment (it's taken over from the Goldbergs, which I also adore!).
Those of you who haven't seen it yet, I think you're going to be pleasantly surprised.
One thing we have found interesting is that the young actor who plays Young Sheldon has really got some of Sheldon's nuances and voice inflections down to a tee - not as in sounding exactly the same, but in his delivery. It's very well done, we think.

Drivemecrazy1974 · 29/01/2018 17:42

Grannytomine - interesting that you love Leonard because I find him to be a little patronising and a bit smug - interesting how different people like different things, isn't it?
Myself, I actually like the way Howard has changed and I love Raj! I'd like to see Howard and Amy's friendship develop as there's something very amusing about seeing them interact :)

expatinscotland · 29/01/2018 17:44

'The writers have never actually said that Sheldon has autism have they?'

And is gay.

coldcanary · 29/01/2018 17:55

That first season of BBT was definitely up and down! I’m sure I read somewhere that Jim Parsons had a hand in choosing the actor and I think he’s very involved in the show?
I’ll definitely look out for it.
