To think Corbyn's maths is wrong again

www.google.co.uk/amp/www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2018/01/28/jeremy-corbyn-announces-labour-will-buy-every-homeless-person/amp/

How is this going to work? Does he mean "give" as in legally transfer or does he mean no rent? How does he think the houses are going to be maintained and utility bills paid? Is it fair on people who've been on waiting lists? Is it really going to reduce the numbers of homeless people if it becomes seen as a quick way to skip the queue?

I got back to my car in an NCP the other night, to find 5 homeless people right next to it with foil and needles. They were also going through some wallets (which may well have been their own; I didn't stop to check of course). The state of them was very sad and although I did feel intimidated at first, I also didn't report them because I thought, where else would they go - it's chucking it down. But then again, no way would they be able to look after a house. They were like zombies.

He's absolutely right to want to do something about the homeless situation. There should be more lots more help. But I don't think this is the answer. AIBU?

Corbyn is an idiot who speaks drivel.

He was going to 'clear all the student debt' if he had got into number 10. This alone would probably have bankrupted the sodding country.

He just says what he thinks people want to hear, he is clueless, and his right hand woman Diane Abbott is as much of a fuckwit as he is.

Thank GOD Labour never won the election.

And I say this as someone who has been 'Labour til I die' all my life. (Until Corbyn became leader that is!)

I pray to God that he never, EVER becomes Prime Minister. We are royally fucked as a country if he does.

As a previous poster said, it's because of him that we have the fucking TORIES in power. (STILL!) Sadly, they are a better option than Labour at the moment. (Because of Corbyn being the leader.)

It fills me with dismay that the younger generation are smitten with him. They see him as some kind of 'saviour of the underdog and unfortunates...' when it reality, he is just a self-serving twat like many other MP's. (And a self-serving twat who can't fucking add up at that!)

He is also arrogant, full of self-importance, and thinks he is some kind of Messiah. He also peddles himself as a kind of working-class hero, when he is actually middle class, with a privileged upbringing, and he was educated at a private school. Nothing wrong with being middle class and privately educated and privileged, but why pretend you're not?!

ShotsFired · 29/01/2018 11:48

I take it you haven't heard of media training then, TeddyIsaHe?

alittlebreed · 29/01/2018 11:49

Teddy indeed I couldn’t do it.

But that is ultimately her job, her responsibility, her livelihood.

It isn’t a slip up. It isn’t stumbling over words or mixing consonants and vowels once under pressure. It’s showing herself as completely clueless time and again.

Rebeccaslicker · 29/01/2018 11:51

Whisky - you've unintentionally nailed the problem. You don't give a shit about the people who are paying. And that's precisely where there will come a tipping point when we won't. You are utterly unrealistic, sorry.

As for being selfish, don't make me laugh. I pay almost 6 figures a year in tax. I gave up my weekend to deal with an urgent court application for a charity on a pro bono basis. What did you do?

OP posts:
Rebeccaslicker · 29/01/2018 11:54

are you really saying that your "friends" would happily downsize their houses, sell off their gardens, give up holidays etc?

If they say that and you believe them, you're beyond naive.

But they won't be saying that. They will be saying that they would pay a BIT more, leaving the balance for others to pay. You know. Like unite. That hard left bastion of the people😂

The80sweregreat · 29/01/2018 11:54

It’s true, Jc is ok with ‘behind the scenes student politic nonsense’ if he had a whiff of power it would soon go pear shaped. I hate saying it as I loath the tories , but I think we’re stuck with them . A new leader is what they need. New ideas.

Gribbie · 29/01/2018 11:54

I understand he's talking a scheme like Housing First which seems to get some great results, both financially and outcomes - the "Evidence and outcomes" section is interesting: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Housing_First

cuttingcarbonemissions · 29/01/2018 11:55

@Teddy - MPs are all given media training. Shadow Ministers get loads of it. I have no doubt that DA is a sincere woman who fights for the interests of her constituents - but the bottom line is she is not that bright and that means it is unlikely she will perform well as a minister. Ministers need to be able to understand and analyse information quickly, pick out the salient points and follow the party’s line to take. DA can’t do that and will not be taken seriously by those with whom she would have to deal as a minister.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 29/01/2018 11:55

What Intelligent said; plenty of empty buildings round here in the north west. Homelessness is about much more than being able to find an empty room to live in. Its about being a together enough person to keep that roof over your head; by holding hold down a job or at least being able to navigate the benefits system by filing in forms and turning up at the job centre.

Many homeless people suffer from mental health and addiction problems that make looking after yourself really difficult. Many struggle with literacy, many have a massive distrust of authority and institutions.

To think you can stick people with theses kind of issues in a flat and all their problems are solved is staggeringly naïve.

petbear · 29/01/2018 11:57

@rebeccaslicker

I pay almost 6 figures a year in tax.

Yes. Of course you do dear.

whiskyowl · 29/01/2018 11:59

"As for being selfish, don't make me laugh. I pay almost 6 figures a year in tax. I gave up my weekend to deal with an urgent court application for a charity on a pro bono basis. What did you do?"

Rebecca - I'm well aware of your wealth, your house in Kensington and Chelsea, and your use of private hospitals etc etc etc etc because you mention it all, ALL THE TIME.

Don't you see the distastefulness of someone in your very, very fortunate, gilded position having a massive rant against a policy that would take some of the people at the opposite end of the social scale off the scale? Don't you think that you could maybe, just maybe, give up some small portion of what you have to ensure that another human being is not sleeping rough in the intense cold? And to help them stabilise their lives and have just a bit of a chance?

And under the kind of tax regime we are talking about, I would pay more and my DH would pay more. We're not wealthy and successul like you are - we're just academics. But if folks like us can afford to give up a bit more for a fairer society, I'm damn sure you can afford to as well. .

BlooperReel · 29/01/2018 11:59

His plan, whilst noble and well intended I'm sure, is naive. Simply providing a home is not going to fix the issue for many rough sleepers. Mental health issues, addiction, ensuring they can budget to run a home etc are all requirements that will come into play. I can guarantee they all had homes once, either with family, renting a room/flat or owning a home, their path to being homeless needs examining and strategies put in place or they will end up in the exact scenario within a year if not a few months.

TeddyIsaHe · 29/01/2018 12:01

I do get what you’re saying regarding DA and she should be able to do it, as t is her job. I cringed at her interviews, BUT I find it disgusting that people use her as a cheap joke to get a laugh. It’s pathetic.

UpstartCrow · 29/01/2018 12:02

TinklyLittleLaugh was spot on.

The Tories need an effective opposition to counter their excesses, and JC and Momentum aren't it. They aren't even close. I want politicians who actually understand the problems they are trying to fix, and the consequences of their actions.

whiskyowl · 29/01/2018 12:03

Blooper - did you consider actually asking whether the assumption of Housing First type methodologies is that a house will "fix all the problems"? Because it isn't.

alittlebreed · 29/01/2018 12:04

To boil this down to simple figures (and that’s so that I can understand and follow: mathematics is not my ‘thing’ :))

Someone takes home £100 and pays £20 in tax.

Would they agree to pay £22 in tax? Probably.

£25? Possibly.

£30? I doubt it. By the time we are paying £40, £50 in tax, we are probably straying into ‘ludicrous’ territory.

petbear · 29/01/2018 12:04

@whiskyowl, you are not telling me you believe Rebecca are you?! 😂😂😂

People make up outlandish stories on the internet, and the OP is no different. Does she fuck pay a 6 figure sum in tax alone!!! 😂😂😂

Rebeccaslicker · 29/01/2018 12:06

Of course you're an academic. That explains it. You've never had to run an actual business have you? Plus you are saying exactly what I said you were saying - YOU want to pay a BIT more, whilst expecting others to carry the rest of it. I don't know why you can't just admit that!
I'd agree with you when it comes to "people" like Philip green.

What I am saying is, you only have a small number of people to get on board with your new policies, because there's only so many higher rate tax payers. Corbyn isn't capable of doing that. If you don't get them on board, some will leave. If it gets worse, more will leave. And then who pays the bill for the schemes?

Please point out where I have said that I am against giving more to homeless people. I've already explained upthread what I do to help in this area so far. What I am, is against a policy that sounds very poorly thought out, like everything Corbyn says.

OP posts:
Rebeccaslicker · 29/01/2018 12:10

Laugh away petbear - I couldn't care less what you believe :)

But there are only a few people who pay that amount (clue - it's not all income tax, there are other kinds like CGT for instance, ever heard of that?!). And they tend to be a lot more transferrable than your average PAYE person. That's the point.

OP posts:
Mummyoflittledragon · 29/01/2018 12:11

Putting 8,000 homeless people into 8,000 new homes isn’t going to solve the problem. He’s going to end up with a lot of trashed new homes, massive repair bills with people oftentimes, who have no idea how to integrate into mainstream life and get off their addictions. Much better to have some kind of state owned HMO’s with a guardian, professionally trained in this area and make the HMO’s some kind of half way house, where the stay can be open ended. Then people would have a better chance of staying off the streets. It probably wouldn’t cost more in any case as the economies of scale having say 8 people to a house.

The whole things a pipe dream. A person upthread said they missed Ed Milliband. I didn’t or his ed stone. His brother otoh, he could have been a good leader I believe and someone I could have voted for.

makeourfuture · 29/01/2018 12:12

He was going to 'clear all the student debt' if he had got into number 10. This alone would probably have bankrupted the sodding country

So we instead pile enough debt to bankrupt a country - your words - on to the shoulders of the young.

Thanks a lot Tories!

Rebeccaslicker · 29/01/2018 12:12

Also I am no fan of Diane Abbott, but I really don't believe she's thick at all. A glance at her history shows that.

I do believe she's out of her depth and in the wrong role and that she has shown herself to be a hypocrite on certain issues, however.

OP posts:
YetAnotherUser · 29/01/2018 12:13

I don't like the Conservatives, but I can fully understand why people vote for them when faced with the kind of drivel Corbyn/momentum/McDonnell/Abbott come out with.
