To not want neighbour to sit on my doorstep?

Jasmin82 · 27/01/2018 17:03

Before Christmas, someone broke into my house. They didn't steal anything, due to the dog barking as soon as they got into the house. I replaced the bolt that they broke on the rear garden gate and thought little more of the incident.
Over the last couple of weeks, someone has broken the bolts on the front door, and someone put tape over the keyhole while I was out at work. I have reported all incidents to the police, but there is only speculation of who is behind the most recent ones.
As my father owns the house, I ran the idea of installing one of the Ring doorbells on the front of the house and a CCTV camera at the back. He agreed and I bought one.
I was starting the installation today when one of my neighbours asked what I was doing. I explained and he got annoyed and said I was being unreasonable and invading his privacy. I stated that I was installing the doorbell in a place where it wouldn't pick up the coming and goings of his house. He then said that, as his landlord doesn't allow smoking in the property, he sits on my doorstep when he goes out for a cig and he doesn't want me spying on him?!
Surely, he can stand outside his house or sit on his own doorstep?

I'd have just told him that he needs to find another doorstep then. YANBU.

bridgetreilly · 27/01/2018 17:05

HIBU not you!

Myddognearlyatethedeliveryman · 27/01/2018 17:05

Tell him he is trespassing. Or he can continue to sit there @£7a week!!

SauvignonBlanche · 27/01/2018 17:05

Get a spiky door mat. Wink

mumonashoestring · 27/01/2018 17:06

Do you really need to ask?

Oh, and let his landlord know if he's making a nuisance of himself.

PaperdollCartoon · 27/01/2018 17:06

Yeh he’s being ridiculous, he can stand somewhere else

John4703 · 27/01/2018 17:06

Ask your dad as he is your landlord to make a no smoking rule for your house. Let the neighbour deal with that. He is a c.f. sitting on your doorstep.

Nanny0gg · 27/01/2018 17:06

You carry on.

Maybe rig up a bucket of water attached to a smoke detector?

Cheeky bugger!

Tell him you don't want him on your property and now he knows that he will be trespassing if he does it again.
You are entitled to take steps to protect the security of your property. If he doesn't want to be filmed on your property he can easily avoid it by not coming into your property, simples.

mineofuselessinformation · 27/01/2018 17:12

I strongly suspect you will have no more problems at the front of the house. Have you told him about the cctv at the back?

happymumof4crazykids · 27/01/2018 17:16

Think you may have found your culprit! Cheeky git using your front door to smoke by!

Mulch · 27/01/2018 17:20

Haha was he actually being serious

TheQueenOfWands · 27/01/2018 17:21

Might be time for him to give up smoking...

What a prick. Does he not have his own doorstep?

angstinabaggyjumper · 27/01/2018 17:22

I would report it to the police.

Jasmin82 · 27/01/2018 17:23

I've put a sign up stating that the house is protected by CCTV. The back of the house has pretty high walls. I checked when installing the CCTV there that it was only going to be activated by motion in the rear garden. So far, it's only activated when either myself or the dog is outside. I was more worried on the rear because the neighbours on the other side have children and I didn't want to catch them playing in their garden. So far, while I've heard them playing in their garden, the camera at the back has only been activated by the dog or myself when we're outside.

Crack on OP. He’s got some nerve to smoke on someone else’s doorstep, let alone complain that his neighbour is now making that difficult for him to do!

category12 · 27/01/2018 17:25

I'd start thinking it was him trying to break in tbh.

Mummyoflittledragon · 27/01/2018 17:25

I think you may need to be slopping out one day when he’s smoking his fag on your property. What an entitled arsehole.

Lifeisabeach09 · 27/01/2018 17:27

Nerve of the guy!
He can piss off and smoke on his own doorstep.

Wakeuptortoise · 27/01/2018 17:29

How bizarre! Him, not you.

Jasmin82 · 27/01/2018 17:30

All the houses have their own doorsteps. Half, including his are set back from the front with just the one front door so there's a small porch. Ours is one the half that has a second door behind the front door. If anything, I'd be picking one of the first kind to be sitting on as they're more protected when it rains than ours is.

Idontdowindows · 27/01/2018 17:34

Tell him you don't want his smoke wafting into your house and he can sit on his own stoop!

TheEmmaDilemma · 27/01/2018 17:34

I don't understand why you didn't just tell him then and there not to use your property for his smoking (I'm a smoker!) and that if he is recorded it would just be evidence of trespass?

ptumbi · 27/01/2018 17:35

he doesn't want to be spied on? Then don't trespass on someone else's property.

What does he do with the fag ends?
