A friend was telling me her partner had a go at her for putting the bath mat in the washing machine with the towels. Apparently this is really disgusting and it should be washed separately. Friend agree and said she hadn't actually put them in together he just thought she had. Aibu to not see why it's disgusting?? Maybe putting the door mat in with the clothes but can't see what wrong with the bath mat?

Wouldn't bother me!

RestlessLegKick · 27/01/2018 13:46

Maybe I'm wrong, but I would NEVER wash a bath mat that people stand on in the same wash as towels I use to dry my face and hair etc.

That's pretty yuck to me.

StealthPolarBear · 27/01/2018 13:48

Why?

missymisdemeanor · 27/01/2018 13:49

Some people create loads of odd 'rules' around house work to make them feel morally superior to others. My grandmas did this and it was very sweet but when my DH started showing me the 'right' way to hang washing I smiled and said he could do it all his way from now on, he soon stopped.

ShastaTrinity · 27/01/2018 13:51

but do you wash your face towels separately from your body towels? Do you wash your underwear separately from your pillow cases and flannels?

I think sorting the laundry by colour and rough fabric is hard work enough

AllMyBestFriendsAreMetalheads · 27/01/2018 13:51

For all towels, bath mats etc. I do a rinse cycle first then wash at 60. The rinse gets rid of most dust/dirt/general muck and then the wash does the rest.

If I split them up, things would have to go longer between washes which I can't see as being better or more hygienic.

What do people wash the bath mat with if not the towels?

SchadenfreudePersonified · 27/01/2018 13:54

So - do these people who wash bath mats separately in case of bum, fanny, of cock germs, also wash their underwear separately from everything else? I just bung stuff like undies, towels, bath mats etc together on a wash which is only slightly cooler than the surface of the sun.

None of us has died.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 27/01/2018 13:55

*or cock germs, not of

RestlessLegKick · 27/01/2018 13:55

Do you wash your underwear separately from your pillow cases and flannels?

Yes, absolutely, doesn't everyone? I'm not washing underwear that could have fecal matter and urine with something that's going to be lying against my face overnight.

The same way that underwear should never be washed with tea towels.

I agree, that life is probably too short, but I can't help that yucky factor I feel sometimes.

ShastaTrinity · 27/01/2018 13:56

Actually, I do wash the dogs separately, does that count?

ShastaTrinity · 27/01/2018 13:56
  • dog towels, not the dogs I don't put the dogs in the washing machine.
berryferry · 27/01/2018 13:57

So you do a special pant wash? Why not just throw the pants away if you're that convinced they don't come out clean enough.

berryferry · 27/01/2018 13:57

Right bunch of loons that come out of the woodwork on these threads I swear.

StealthPolarBear · 27/01/2018 13:57

", absolutely, doesn't everyone? I'm not washing underwear that could have fecal matter and urine with something that's going to be lying against my face overnight."
But the key word is "wash".

ShastaTrinity · 27/01/2018 13:58

RestlessLegKick
there were some posters who proudly put their toilet seat (TOILET SEATS!) in the dishwasher.

I suppose we all have our own limit of what we find acceptable or not Grin

PositivelyPERF · 27/01/2018 13:58

60 degrees is hot enough to kill germs or sticking them on hot in the tumble dryer. That’s what we were told to wash our nursing/HCA uniforms at.

I don't put the dogs in the washing machine.

They might be okay on a Wool cycle.

If you try it, let me know. Mine are filthy.

crunchtime · 27/01/2018 13:59

insanity

people wouldn't have these bonkers rules if they didn't have luxury of free running hot water, washing machines and bio soap powder.

I think I'm in the minority of people who wash their bath mats separately!

Kitchen towels / dish cloths also get washed separately.

My clothes get washed separately too.

ShastaTrinity · 27/01/2018 14:02

Schadenfreude
they wouldn't fit, my machine is too small (or the dogs too big)Grin

babyccinoo · 27/01/2018 14:02

Bath towels get washed separately.

ShastaTrinity · 27/01/2018 14:02

Woof wash

I like the sound of that!

AllMyBestFriendsAreMetalheads · 27/01/2018 14:02

TBF, I used cloth nappies when my kids were babies, so my internal ick factor has shifted over the years and I will probably totally freak the uber-hygienic folks out.
