To think rusks are fine?

My mum gave us rusks.

I just gave my 24wk old half a rusk and breastmilk - he couldn’t get enough.

Am I going to mothering hell ?

I know they are sugary but he doesn’t have teeth to rot!

Do other people do this? Surely they would stop selling them if no one else bought them?

Everywhere I look people go on about rusks like it’s poison

I eat them sometimes and I'm in my 40s.

There are sugar free ones.

MoralBeryl · 25/01/2018 18:15

I pass no judgement (my children had the occasional rusk), but sugar isn’t just an issue for the teeth.

dementedpixie · 25/01/2018 18:16

You don't get sugar free ones. I tasted them once and found them so sweet that I didn't give them again. You don't want them to get a sweet tooth or they may refuse savoury

glueandstick · 25/01/2018 18:17

They are not fine in any shape or form. Thanks to their powdery nature you will never get them out of a car seat when your small child decides to hide one under the liner 😒

CheshireChat · 25/01/2018 18:18

Ok, but why rusks which you admit aren't great and not a banana or something?

pemberleypearl · 25/01/2018 18:18

My mum bought me some reduced sugar ones so my DD has had them. I don't think it's anything to fret over.

Jerryboree · 25/01/2018 18:18

It's not something I'd choose to feed my DC at weaning, especially as one of the first foods. But your choice, I don't think you need to justify it. Although sugar isn't just about rotting teeth you know.

Allthewaves · 25/01/2018 18:18

I judge. You might as well just give biscuits

HappyLollipop · 25/01/2018 18:18

My 6mo loves rusks! I think it's fine as long as it's not a regular thing.

DeleteOrDecay · 25/01/2018 18:19

Mine never had them, but I didn't really buy any sort of food specifically aimed at babies.

Oooocrikeyitscold · 25/01/2018 18:19

Forget the sugar it’s the mess!!!! Have you ever given one to a baby whilst wearing black jeans with the baby on your lap....horrific!!

DeadButDelicious · 25/01/2018 18:20

Love a bit of rusk. I can never buy them for DD though. I'd eat the bloody lot before she got a look in! Grin

Chienrouge · 25/01/2018 18:20

I never bought them, I don’t really get what they are! Aren’t they just hard biscuits?

demirose87 · 25/01/2018 18:22

Of course they are fine. I've given rusks with no problems, as long as it's not the only thing they're eating. They have even had the occasional biscuit when able to eat finger food! 😂

IHaveBrilloHair · 25/01/2018 18:23

Fine in moderation, same as all foods.

Oooocrikeyitscold · 25/01/2018 18:23

No chienrouge... they pretend to be a hard biscuit...and then they dissolve into a mucky mess 😂😂😂

Don’t stress OP, first child I gave no sugar for the first year following the guidance ‘they won’t develop a sweet tooth’. His favourite foods are; chocolate, ice cream and cake (ha to not having a sweet tooth)

AmethystRaven · 25/01/2018 18:24

I used to give mine the occasional rusk - I mainly just used the DC as en excuse to buy them so I could eat them though!

Theyhaveallbeenused2 · 25/01/2018 18:24

They are bad very bad....packs hone before u can get kettle boiled ;)

NaiceToMeetYou · 25/01/2018 18:26

I just gave my 24wk old half a rusk

6 months. Your child is 6 months old.

DodecahedronCat · 25/01/2018 18:28

The first food he had was a banana blw style , just thought I’d try the rusk-milk mush to see if he liked being spoon fed.

Also I have such happy memories of rusks!

It wasn't until I came on mumsnet and discovered how much suagr is in bread and yogurts. One kids fruit yogurt was half sugar allowance for the day. When I added up my kids were getting at least double recommended sugar a day

newtlover · 25/01/2018 18:29

make your own- cut thick fingers of bread and then bake in a very slow oven, I think it's called zweibacke in german
really children need no encouragement to develop a sweet tooth

MistressPage · 25/01/2018 18:30

Oh don't worry, the odd rusk is fine!

blackteasplease · 25/01/2018 18:31

I wouldn't give them as a first food but maybe occasionally when they are a bit bigger. I remember my little brother being given them though and 4 yo me continually asking for one!
