To think rusks are fine?

DodecahedronCat · 25/01/2018 18:11

My mum gave us rusks.

I just gave my 24wk old half a rusk and breastmilk - he couldn’t get enough.

Am I going to mothering hell ?

I know they are sugary but he doesn’t have teeth to rot!

Do other people do this? Surely they would stop selling them if no one else bought them?

Everywhere I look people go on about rusks like it’s poison

Ok, but why rusks which you admit aren't great and not a banana or something?

Why not a rusk on Monday, a banana on Tuesday and an avocado on Wednesday? I think it's fine to introduce sweet things as part of a varied diet.

Littlechocola · 25/01/2018 18:31

So many other options.

ThisLittleKitty · 25/01/2018 18:32

I give mine rusks loads of people I know do IRL. It's only online I've seen hatred for them. My baby doesn't like bananas

Bambamber · 25/01/2018 18:33

I've chosen not to give them, my DD has eaten exactly what I eat from 6 months. I think like with most foods, it's fine in moderation. I certainly wouldn't bat an eyelid at other people giving them, but when someone offered my DD one I told them flat out no.

mirime · 25/01/2018 18:35

I love rusks, they bring back such happy memories of being four or five, my DM letting me feed my baby sister rusks with milk and me eating most of it myself.

I also bought them for DS when they were really for me Grin

Sharonthetotallyinsane · 25/01/2018 18:37

I think the longer you keep them off sweet biscuits the better. Rice cake instead?

HereWeGoRoundAgain · 25/01/2018 18:41

Ordinary rich tea biscuits have less sugar than rusks...

Flabbermingo · 25/01/2018 18:44

You don't want them to get a sweet tooth or they may refuse savoury

Breast milk and formula are extremely sweet.

Worieddd · 25/01/2018 18:46

They are a nightmare to crumble up

We resorted to putting them in a bag and bashing with a rolling pin

bobstersmum · 25/01/2018 18:47

I stressed so much about this type of thing with my previous children, but this baby is allowed her to try all kinds of things! Everything in moderation.

Justmuddlingalong · 25/01/2018 18:51

Mine got the odd rusk now and then. If I hadn't eaten them all. Blush But cleaning rusk that's been sneezed all over the high chair, kitchen cabinets and walls is more of an issue IMHO.

BillywigSting · 25/01/2018 18:58

Ds had rusks and milk quite often when he was weaning and now is one of the best eaters I know at 4yo.

Once he was on proper solids he just got a very small portion of whatever we had and this week has eaten beef stew mash and broccoli, plaice rice and steamed veggies, a fry up (including mushrooms and tomatoes) and chicken fajitas.

Don't fret about the rusk. As long as he gets to taste lots of different things he'll be fine.

(ds does have a sweet tooth but children are biologically programmed that way. link to study)

BuckysRoboticArm · 25/01/2018 19:04

I gave dd rusks before she was 1. She really just used to enjoy chewing on them, would barely eat a third.

She's 3 now and teeth are great and she doesn't much like biscuits or cake, if she is given some then she generally takes a bite and wastes them. Apparently the rusks didn't trigger a sugar addiction thank goodness...

So many other options and yes we gave her those too. It's called having a little variety. I see people freaking out over sugar on here all the time but nobody cares about pufa. Be consistent at least.

AHedgehogCanNeverBeBuggered · 25/01/2018 19:36
  1. Why wean before 6 months? Plenty of evidence to show it can be harmful.
  1. Rusks aren't particularly healthy but as long as most of your child's diet is reasonable it's fine as an occasional treat.

Give me strength. Do genuinely believe that a few weeks before is going to cause harm? It's not like the baby is going to magically turn exactly 6 months and become immune to whatever "harm" taking solid food 2 weeks before the 6 month poses. Sheesh.

Do people know how sweet breastmilk is? Or bananas for that matter? Sugar bombs.
A rusk isn't going to turn your baby into a sugar fiend monster, don't give it a second thought.

It’s funny how much a little biscuit can divide opinions.

They are absolutely delicious with black currant jam on them.

user1471426142 · 25/01/2018 20:19

In my area the health visitors are very anti rusks so I never had them and didn’t really see anyone else feeding them to their babies. Probably not that different to the odd biscuit though but i personally wouldn’t have given biscuit or cake to a 6 month old. Now as a toddler she inhales sweet foods if given the chance so pretty sure resisting early on did nothing to reduce her taste for sugar.

IHaveBrilloHair · 25/01/2018 20:25

Someone suggesting making rusks from bread?
Ahaaaaaa only on MN, and the mad thing is if you suggested bread you'd be told its a harmful killer food and you shouldn't let your child eat it.

Gotta love these food threads.

hazeyjane · 25/01/2018 20:26

make your own- cut thick fingers of bread and then bake in a very slow oven

That's not a Rusk!

IHaveBrilloHair · 25/01/2018 20:29

That's toast, the suggestion is hilarious thoughGrin

Ansumpasty · 25/01/2018 20:32

I let my fussy kid eat rusks for breakfast every day for 4 years.

It's not heroin

Banananananananaaaa · 25/01/2018 20:37

Of course the odd rusk is fine. They were like crack to my kids. As were the Elias kitchen fruit pouches. They are now totally normal little boys - love sweet things, love pizza and chips etc, but happily eat a balanced diet. Honestly I reckon kids weaned exclusively on broccoli and avocado grow up to love sweet food as much as kids weaned on rusks and fruit purees. It's up to you as a parent to make sure they are offered a balanced diet as they get older.

Thishatisnotmine · 25/01/2018 20:42

I love a rusk spread with cold butter. No idea if my dds like them as I wouldn't share!

mikado1 · 25/01/2018 20:45

Yes yes calm down about Rusks bananas are sugar bombs. Alright then Confused

Op I always keep oatcakes, rice cakes as an alternative have zero nutrition and that's the nicest thing I can say about them! Oatcakes good to mash fruit/tuna/avocado etc on. Especially handy in these f
