To think rusks are fine?

My mum gave us rusks.

I just gave my 24wk old half a rusk and breastmilk - he couldn’t get enough.

Am I going to mothering hell ?

I know they are sugary but he doesn’t have teeth to rot!

Do other people do this? Surely they would stop selling them if no one else bought them?

Everywhere I look people go on about rusks like it’s poison

First weeks!

MissDuke · 25/01/2018 20:47

I never bothered with rusks, mine just ate what we ate. I don't really get the big deal though, if you want your baby to have them then just do it? No need to dwell on it!

Momo18 · 25/01/2018 21:05

The ones we use are full of vitamins, my DD eats plenty veg too

Momo18 · 25/01/2018 21:10

Oh and for context my first born ate a super healthy diet, no rusks, no juice but water, veg, meat, fruit, etc etc. 2nd born, but of everything. First born now a fussy eater, second born eats anything, loves rare steak.

Rayraybt2006 · 25/01/2018 21:15

Do whatever the hell you like. It's your child and your decision. As long as everything in moderation which is the healthiest diet anyone, young or old, can have. It never did any harm to any of us as kids. Believe in yourself Momma x

TSSDNCOP
Or Golden Syrup.
I'm craving one now!

MollyWantsACracker · 25/01/2018 21:26

I loved rusks. Especially farleys. Liga were a poor second. That cheerful pink box.
I didn’t give rusks to mine.
Both of them love sweets. One of them doesn’t like pizza or chips (at all). I don’t know where I got him. He adores broccoli 🥦 She loves porridge. They’d both eat their body weight in shite though
All in moderation. Including moderation.

RoboticSealpup · 25/01/2018 21:29

Rice cakes are not a good alternative. They've been banned in Sweden for having too much mercury in them.

dementedpixie · 25/01/2018 21:30

I think you mean arsenic!

SoftSheen · 25/01/2018 21:39

YABU, they are full of sugar. As are 'baby biscotti' Hmm If you think your baby is ready for food, try breadsticks, chunks of soft pear, cooked brocolli, etc. Or as pp suggested, make your own rusks from chunky fingers of stale bread, slowly dried out in a cool oven.

MadRainbow · 25/01/2018 21:40

Big fan of all food in moderation, the baby is the right age for weaning, not stupidly early so his tummy can't handle it. You go ahead, at the end of the day it's your child not every other Tom, Dick and Harry's

Also fair enough if you have a 2 year old and you're saying they're 24 months, but at this age all the HCP you see ask for their age in weeks and you can sod off if you think my baby brain can work out 2 different values. My HV wants weeks you can put up with it or work it out yourself.

meredintofpandiculation · 25/01/2018 21:47

Rusks used to be crumbled into milk as a first food. But in their hard form they were used as something to chew on to aid teething, not as part of the diet. Things have changed!

PotatoesOfTheCarribean · 25/01/2018 21:55

Try readybrek mixed with milk instead. MUCH easier.

IHaveBrilloHair · 25/01/2018 22:18

How is it easier?Confused

PotatoesOfTheCarribean · 25/01/2018 22:25

How is it easier than crumbling up a biscuit that could be used as some sort of building material?

Err... Spoon into milk. Mix. HmmConfused

Baby rice is a waste of time too. Expensive and pointless. Ready brek is cheap, no sugar, and made of oats, so even slightly healthy Wink

Toddlerteaplease · 25/01/2018 22:32

Oo I love rusks, and I'm 36!

sweetsparrow · 25/01/2018 22:43

Pretty sure my mum used to bash one in a bag with a rolling pin to finely grind it then put it in my little sister's bottle with the milk, using a pin to make the teat hole bigger to get her to sleep through Grin She turned out just fine!

Agree it's all about balance, they are not evil!
