After chatting about Scotland this morning I've been fancying some Tunnocks tea cakes. Managed to get some at lunch time for a treat.

However they've only gone and fucking added palm oil. I'm sure they never used to do this.

Is there no chocolate product that hasn't been ruined?

Aibu to think palm oil products should have a warning?

The dairy fine hasn't got palm oil - I just double checked.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 24/01/2018 20:42

South African Dairy Milk is still proper. I'd forgotten that I used to love it, until I ate some out there. Here, it's a palm oiled greasy fat block.

Fishcalledlola · 24/01/2018 20:43

DM just brought Whittakers chocolate back from a trip to New Zealand. The first chocolate I have enjoyed for ages. Not even going to buy a cream egg this year.

Divine chocolate is lovely - Oxfam stock it. And Waitrose.

crumbsinthecutlerydrawer · 24/01/2018 20:47

Irish Dairy Milk is how it used to be and no palm oil. Our local corner shop sells it (NI) but you can get it online.

Rebeccaslicker · 24/01/2018 20:50

Amazon does it too: www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?k=new+zealand+dairy+milk&tag=mumsnetforum-21

The rocky road one is lovely.

Do whittakers use palm oil? A colleague brought back bars of that from NZ once and it was divine.

CoolCarrie · 24/01/2018 20:51

I hate to tell you but Barr’s have changed IRU BRU by cutting the sugar!

emmcan · 24/01/2018 20:54

Tesco do a nice own-brand palm oil-free chocolate. Also Green & Blacks have avoided the cheap substitute ingredient.

MoonlightandMusic · 24/01/2018 20:54

YANBU - the stuff is everywhere. I had to give up one of my favourite hair creams (Kerastase) as it had palm oil listed in the ingredients. [anger] Sad. The majority of soap now has palm derivatives in too.

crumbs - not sure you're right about the Irish version of Dairy Milk either - the .ie site lists palm oil as an ingredient. It may be that the Irish factory hasn't messed around with the recipe proportions in the same way as they did with the UK so the taste isn't so different?

SleepingInYourFlowerbed · 24/01/2018 20:55

Waitrose own chocolate doesn't have palm oil and I think its lovely

k2p2k2tog · 24/01/2018 20:56

Lindt doesn't use palm oil either in plain chocolate, only in filled truffles and things.

EggsonHeads · 24/01/2018 20:57

There are sustainable palm oil plantations these days-does the packaging/website state the source?

IcingSausage · 24/01/2018 20:58

Do it Yorick!

I went from complete omnivore to vegan overnight back in June last year. Best thing I’ve ever done; for the animals, the planet and myself!

Bloody palm oil though. It’s virtually impossible to avoid Angry

Originalfoogirl · 24/01/2018 21:06

I really detest tunnocks tea cakes. Partial to a dark chocolate caramel wafer though, are they ok?

RedialCallHold · 24/01/2018 21:13

Sainsbury's own brand chocolate is good, I can recommend that one if they've not added palm oil to that too Hmm

bonzo77 · 24/01/2018 21:14

THeyve done something heinous to Toblerone too. Had some last week and it was so disappointing.

NiteFlights · 24/01/2018 21:22

Milka is a nice, cheap milk chocolate.

Divine is a good (and ethical) upgrade though, as mentioned earlier.

NiteFlights · 24/01/2018 21:23

Without palm oil, obviously.

Singingtherapy · 24/01/2018 21:24

I don't get it. With so many people saying they've practically stopped eating chocolate, why haven't the powers that be accepted defeat and gone back to their original recipe. They must be losing millions surely. Can't we start a MCGA campaign. Make Chocolate Great Again!

Hippadippadation · 24/01/2018 21:26

I like Lindt, Milka, Bellarom from Lidl and Galaxy still seems to be ok?

Hippadippadation · 24/01/2018 21:26

Oooh and Ritter Sport. Yummy.

Plantlover · 24/01/2018 21:27

Bonzo

Agree with you about Toblerone. Used to love it but now don't buy it.

FlaviaAlbia · 24/01/2018 21:28

Divine chocolate and Tesco's own brand milk chocolate are palm oil free. They're my favourites now all the others taste wierd.

BrioLover · 24/01/2018 21:30

Divine doesn't taste of anything IMO. Green & Blacks, whilst owned by Kraft (they were bought by Cadbury I think, before the 'merger') still tastes good and is palm oil and soya free.
