Supermarket bakery aisle

AIBU to say that Tesco's Cheese and Jalepeno bloomer is the top spot in the supermarket baker aisle, followed closely by Sainsbury's sea salt and rosemary focaccia 😍

Tiger bread meh! I find most supermarket white bread tastes of nothing and is like a big chewy white kitchen sponge.

I used to work in Sainsbury's bakery as a student and it isn't true it's all frozen - some of it is, particularly a lot of the cakes and croissants etc. But all the breads, rolls (apart from Parisian range) doughnuts etc. were made, proved and baked fresh. This was some time ago so may have changed.

Another vote for Lidl’s fig and walnut. Delish with their soft, spreadable creamy blue cheese - comes in a semi-circle shape in blue-white foil wrapper packaged in an outer cardboard case.

Co-op cheese & jalapeno bloomer is a close second.

@FizzyCherry I'm planning a trip to Ikea when I move and will be definitely stopped off at Sainsbury's for that focaccia 😍😍😍

Our local Sainsburys seem to bake their own bread etc.

On another note, knew somebody that worked in a factory that made cheesecakes for Iceland and M&S - exactly the same product came off the production line and just went in different boxes.

£1.50 in Iceland, £4 in M&S.

WaggyMama · 23/01/2018 08:04

Not quite in the spirit of the thread but my local Tesco now sells their fresh bread uncovered so any Tom, Dick or Harry might have picked up my loaf, coughed on it and put it back. I hate that.

Our Co-op had a refit and placed the open Danish Pastries at the end of an isle where everyone queues for the tills. Bleurgh! And it's not in the most salubrious part of town either. Bleurgh, Bleurgh.

Tesco chunky triple Choc chip shortbreads, 4 squares of sugary, melt in the mouth heaven.

Interesting that Tesco and Co-op have the same supplier as I've tried the shortbreads from there. They look the same but don't have the same texture and are really tasteless. That can't be just down to the baking can it?

RowenasDiadem · 23/01/2018 10:08

Sadly I have to avoid that section. Too many times I have seen people picking the bread up with their manky fucking hands and squishing it to test freshness and taking a good sniff with their dirty fucking faces right on the bread. WHY?! WHY WOULD THEY DO THAT?!

If it's wrapped however I may reconsider. I'm still not happily about the sniffing through the wrappings though.

The bakery aisle needs bouncers.

Lidl walnut and fig

Is that in the fresh bakery section? I have looked in our Lidl after seeing it mentioned on MN before but they don't seem to sell it here.

Veda is the food of the gods especially the heel! Also love Lidl flat crusty loaf thingy

Puzzledandpissedoff · 23/01/2018 13:31

I love them all Grin but what really concerns me is this awful thing of displaying stuff on open shelves right in front of the shoppers ... I'm looking at you, M&S

Just WHY is this considered a good idea - especially at this time of year, with so many bugs around?? I'm sure hey think it looks terribly rustic and trendy, but I'll buy my baked goods from somewhere they've not been open to sneezers and spitters, thanks all the same Hmm

ButteredScone · 23/01/2018 22:05

M&S fig and walnut with posh butter. So good, so good.

LimberlostGirl · 01/02/2018 13:47

Just home from Lidl with walnut and fig bread. Inspired to buy after reading this thread. OMG it’s the dogs wotsits.

MadisonAvenue · 01/02/2018 13:52

I stopped buying loaves from Tesco when they refurbished the bakery and stopped wrapping bread.

ThomasHardyPerennial · 01/02/2018 14:00

Morrisons cheese, tomato, and herb bagels are delicious!

CheeseAndOnionIceCream · 01/02/2018 18:57

Not exactly bread, but in the bakery aisle,I absolutely adore Asda's giant cheese straws. Mmm they melt in your mouth.

LadyChatterlysLoofah · 01/02/2018 19:04

Before I go out of my way to get to Lidl for what sounds heavenly fig and walnut bread, could somebody reassure me that it's a wrapped product? Please? I will be gutted if it's not.

TheSleeperandTheSpindle · 02/02/2018 14:32

Whoever recommended Lidl Fig and Walnut bread - I am suing you for the amount it will cost to eventually crane lift me out of my house. It’s bloody lush! I may have eaten almost a whole loaf today Blush Disclaimer: I am 11 weeks pregnant and can finally eat without feeling sick!

It’s not a wrapped product unfortunately LadyC
