To be a bit freaked out by this banana ....

.... was just about to peel it, and then saw this weird cocoon thing growing on it.

Wider family all here, and opinions vary as to what it is ....

Lots of baby spiders? (100s)
Just one big spider?
Something else?

And what should we do? Dad (who lived for a year in Africa) thinks they will very likely be poisonous, and microwave or boiling water?

To be a bit freaked out by this banana ....

I don't think wiping a spider cocoon with a tissue and throwing it away would help either, would it?

Why not? The entire contents of the cocoon can be crushed between your finger and thumb, chances are the contents are dead anyway.

Cakedoesntjudge · 21/01/2018 20:52

To be honest, as a retail worker I'd be happy enough with the pictures 🙈 the only way we'd be able to trace bananas is if they came in a bag and then we'd only need the info on the bag. I still think you should let the shop know and they might want the cocoon for testing so I'd call and check before you discard it but I can confidently say I would have had a heart attack if someone had handed me a Tupperware box of baby spiders when I worked on customer services.

I had enough of a hard time when someone bought back a punnet of sealed strawberries that had a live wasp in them. That wasn't a fun day at work but baby spiders would be a lot worse!

73kittycat73 · 21/01/2018 20:53

people who kill spiders out of fear when there's no risk to themselves or anyone else are killing needlessly.

And killing animals purposely bred for slaughter is not needless in this day and age? (No need to hunt/kill. Food available from all around the world/fruit/ veg etc.)

Wingedharpy · 21/01/2018 20:53

Banana moth pupa

DextroDependant · 21/01/2018 20:53

People are weird about bananas.

MsHarry · 21/01/2018 20:54

FGS I don't blame OP. The spider is not in your house but hers!!

TrinitySquirrel · 21/01/2018 20:54

Spiders. Burn it.

MsHarry · 21/01/2018 20:54

What are the other bananas like?

Whensday · 21/01/2018 20:56

I thought this thread was going to be about the girl from Corrie who had her intimate moment with a banana go viral.

Confused
starzig · 21/01/2018 20:56

Are the angry people just having a laugh? Honestly can't tell if they are serious or just on the wind up LOL.

Redwineistasty · 21/01/2018 20:57

I’d say that was an assumption deStijl..... It’s possible that the posters are all vegans

ObiJuanKenobi · 21/01/2018 20:57

"Such a dirty hypocrite" well that escalated quickly Confused

SunshineHQ · 21/01/2018 20:59

Ronniescue, I'm a bit Confused at quite how angry you sound. I hope you're OK.

But just to confirm, we don't have a local Sainsbury's, and I always though the larger company 'Online Orders' came from a different type of warehouse (a 'Dark Store' or something like that ... basically like a normal store, but not open to normal customers). So I don't think is a simple as just taking back to the store - I don't know which store or warehouse it came from.

I'm never buying bananas again 😳

3luckystars · 21/01/2018 20:59

They wrote about those banana spiders in our local newspaper, it said if they bite a man they will never get another erection again.

I would take it very very seriously! I would ring someone who knows about spiders and get them around urgently to kill it and kill the banana.

QuitMoaning · 21/01/2018 21:00

I don’t understand why people are scared of spiders. Especially in the U.K.
What is it that is scary?

I like them as they eat flies and flies are disgusting and spread disease. We would be stuffed without spiders.

SunshineHQ · 21/01/2018 21:01

English spiders aren't poisonous, but tropical spiders can be.

I’ve just been put off spiders for life

andpeggy1 · 21/01/2018 21:05

So to everyone who's horrified about boiling/burning/killing this, what would have you all done?????

MinesaLattecino · 21/01/2018 21:05

Sainsbo's are quite active on twitter. Tweet them the image and then you can DM them the order number so they can track it.

I'd be moving house chucking your bins out and hoovering like nuts right now if i were you! Good spot!

MsHomeSlice · 21/01/2018 21:06

if only you had bought them from Waitrose instead of Sainsbury

They'd have sent someone around with a tupperware for the spider

Tattybogle89 · 21/01/2018 21:07

The ‘dark store’
Filled with dark bananas and nightmares

Seriously though,if you box up that banana and take it back to customer service, I would love to be there to see the reaction as you explain why your banana is black. They so won’t think your mental
