To be a bit freaked out by this banana ....

.... was just about to peel it, and then saw this weird cocoon thing growing on it.

Wider family all here, and opinions vary as to what it is ....

Lots of baby spiders? (100s)
Just one big spider?
Something else?

And what should we do? Dad (who lived for a year in Africa) thinks they will very likely be poisonous, and microwave or boiling water?

was it a Blast Ended Skrewt

Hmmm similar, however lets not give the Acid Arsed Arachnid too much fame. They might multiply and come and get their high flying, poison depleted brother.....

bushtailadventures · 22/01/2018 13:46

When we found baby spiders on bananas from Asda we emailed them a photo, they just thanked us for letting them know and nothing more was said. I have to say I put them in a bin liner out in the cold though, just to be safe. Never buying bananas in bags again!

murphys · 22/01/2018 14:04

Can I just add in a completely different banana issue that I contacted the supermarket head office about.

For some or other reason said supermarket thought that bananas from Ecuador were far more superior than any others, as they were advertised in the local offers paper and even on TV.

When I got to the store and went to the fruit and veg department, there was a (quite clearly a store written note of A4 paper) stating:

BANANAS FROM EQUATOR

!!

bwahahahahaha

I took a pic (I will have to find it on my pc) and emailed head office, asking for an explanation of how they managed to grow so well there.
Cue, reply with so sorry, oh gosh how embarrassing.

1wokeuplikethis · 22/01/2018 14:14

But op, what did you do with the cocoon after boiling?
Did it just go in the bin?
I've rtft and feel a bit invested. You don't have a spider bite really do you?

EggsonHeads · 22/01/2018 14:27

I have two unopened bags of bananas sitting on the window sill. Just fucking kill me-actually you may have, my heart has been beating double time since I started reading this thread and stopped for a split second when I looked up at the window sill and remembered the bananas. Confused

LittleMissNaice · 22/01/2018 15:20

I feel like a Dark Store is the ideal breeding ground for spiders. Lots of darked on items for the baby spiders to practice their willy rubbing on.

LinoleumBlownapart · 22/01/2018 15:29

They shoot some type of acid out of their arse - oh good god!

Things in the pool are my hatred, we get tarantulas mostly, but 5 year old DS always jumps out and screams "Fish, fish fish" and then we know we have to net some large, ugly, leggy, crackily thing. My dog is a wimp he is usually found hiding under the chair that DS is usually standing on top of and monitoring the proper disposal of the "fish".

HamishBamish · 22/01/2018 15:36

They shoot some type of acid out of their arse

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Bananas are firmly off the shopping list now!

etap · 22/01/2018 16:09

NRTT. What was it?

MiddleClassProblem · 22/01/2018 16:54

Maybe the Dark Stores are breading them... it’s actually a Black Mirror plot

lightcola · 22/01/2018 17:44

After reading his thread this morning I have inspected the bananas I just bought from Morrison’s more vigorously than I ever thought I would.

User11011 · 22/01/2018 17:52

😳

etap · 22/01/2018 17:54

Glad I'm allergic, shudder

PinkPanther27 · 22/01/2018 17:59

My friend got bitten by a banana spider when she was a teenager, it's made me really inspect them before I pick them up and I never put my hand in a box of them if I can't see, shudder.

Hygge · 22/01/2018 18:32

This thread has made me itch. I'm seriously considered boiling all the food in the house just to be on the safe side, and I haven't bought bananas in months because of spider nests

OP are you sure the nursery hasn't just been moved to your arm instead of your banana?

I love the idea of the Dark Stores though.

marymoosmum · 22/01/2018 18:42

Looks like the Brazilian wandering spider.

Twoo · 22/01/2018 18:49

I’m absolutely howling at the comment how stupidly the banana was dealt with . So v funny 😂 tears, there are real tears of joyous laughter.

DH has just commented for goodness sake, nothing is that funny.

YES IT IS Grin

whoareyoukidding · 22/01/2018 18:52

I must admit that when I bought a banana on the way home from work, I gave it a good look all over, after reading this thread. To think that I used to be such a banana innocent!

Twoo · 22/01/2018 18:52

This is the thread that just keeps giving Lots of darked on items for the baby spiders to practice their willy rubbing on. wahahahahaha

Booboo66 · 22/01/2018 19:10

Hope I don’t ruin everyone’s spider fantasies but that little cocoon is identical to the irritating but harmless little moths that used to come and build them on the bananans and indeed any other food stuff they could get their annoying little selves on when I lived abroad. Those little ninjas could get themselves in to anything. I once found one inside an unopened spice jar that had a plastic seal on the outside.

MiddleClassProblem · 22/01/2018 19:18

A moth? So op could have all her clothes and soft furnishings eaten? Will the torment never end!

Booboo66 · 22/01/2018 19:24

As far as I’m aware these didn’t do that, just infiltrated your food cupboard. OP’s flour could be particularly at risk. (Tupperware is only a minor inconvenience to them)

wakemeupbefore · 22/01/2018 19:29

Too late to the party but once, some moons ago, I was in SE Asia, walking a friends puppy in the dusk when something, I thought cat/large rat, got puppy squealing in fright.
Yep, it was a spider, partial to banana plantations.
Halo

Samesituation · 22/01/2018 20:15

What's the update OP ?

thegreatbeyond · 22/01/2018 22:42

There will be no update...OP is being held prisoner in the Brazilian spider's bananarey lair now.

It almost sounds like the title of a Mills and Boon.
