Bread & Butter

Tonight we had homemade cassoulet with freshly baked bread. I spread butter on mine to dip in the stew - it was delicious! DH was appalled as apparently dipping bread should not have butter on. WIBU??

LTB - anyone who doesn’t appreciate that adding butter to almost every dish makes it infinitely better deserves to be ostracised from polite society!

Tableauz · 21/01/2018 20:42

Thanks for reassuring me - I told him most people would spread with butter as it is far tastier! He disagreed Hmm

I'm considering leaving him over this. He once spread Olivio on toast for me rather than real butter (there was no jam or other additional topping just the spread) and couldn't understand the issue.

We might be too incompatible...

I would say a cassoulet has chicken, something extra that is meaty in it like sausage or meatballs, and white beans.

butter on dipping bread is a bit vulgar...like dunking biscuits and making chip butties, but if you cannot do something deliciously vulgar in your own home then really, what is the bloody point?

I hope the butter was thick enough for teeth marks.

Eliza9917 · 21/01/2018 20:46

Wtf!

How is butter, dipped biscuits and chip butties vulgar?

Vitalogy · 21/01/2018 20:47

I bet he's not even tried it either.
I always have bread with butter when I have soup, the day I discovered that! Well, gorgeous.

Tableauz · 21/01/2018 20:47

Here you go - it's a quick one from Ainsley Harriott! The irony of it being low-fat is not lost on me.

Oh and yes to soup bread having butter on thick enough to leave teeth marks - that is yummy!

I will eat any old shit but I don't even like butter on sandwiches because it just ruins the taste and makes everything all weird and slimy. I remember watching my cousin dip buttered bread into soup once and nearly throwing up on the spot.

Butter on cream crackers on the other hand...

UrbaneSprawl · 21/01/2018 20:59

This is my go-to recipe for cassoulet (Lindsey Bareham’s “Just One Pot”). Brilliant if those vac-packed duck breasts are on offer, as they seem to be from time to time.

Oh lovely! Thanks both!

Tableauz · 21/01/2018 21:06

@urbanesprawl ooh thanks for posting that. Duck is my favourite!

Dipping bread can have butter if you dip bread plus butter plus jam in hot chocolate or buttered bread with eggs a la coque, yum.

Weedsnseeds1 · 21/01/2018 21:08

Cassoulet is a French dish of beans and meat, things like confit ducks legs, smoked pork sausage, ham etc.

Bubbinsmakesthree · 21/01/2018 21:10

I am renowned for my love of butter but I wouldn't dip with buttered bread. The butter forms a barrier preventing the bread absorbing the sauce.

Solly76 · 21/01/2018 21:11

Totally up to you. You're the one eating it.
Personal preferences really
I only use dry bread for dipping but someone else buttering theirs and dipping would not make me bat an eyelid

Whatshallidonowpeople · 21/01/2018 21:14

Cassoulet has so much oil already I'm surprised it needs butter. But, it's nobody else's business

MerryInthechelseahotel · 21/01/2018 21:17

Where do you live? I'm on my way!

BackforGood · 21/01/2018 21:18

Thank you all Smile

LaurieMarlow · 21/01/2018 21:22

The butter melting into the sauce is a glorious thing. But then I also love to dunk biscuits, so am vulgar beyond belief and couldn't give a shit

DorisDangleberry · 21/01/2018 21:23

The most appalling thing in this story is that fact that you were eating low fat cassoulet. The whole point of cassoulet is that is is rammed full of fatty duck and pork belly. Low fat cassoulet is like low alcohol wine. Fucking pointless.

DorisDangleberry · 21/01/2018 21:25

Low fat cassoulet in a hurry

Ainsley Harriott should be strung from a fucking lamppost.

FithColumnist · 21/01/2018 21:27

LTB. Obviously there is no future here at all. I mean, how can he ever be trusted again?

Whatshallidonowpeople · 21/01/2018 21:30

That is not cassoulet

FadedRed · 21/01/2018 22:15

Bubbins surely that only happens if you butter both sides? Or have I been doing it wrong all these many, many years?
