It's dds friends birthday tomorrow and she has just decided she wants to take her in some chocolate as a gift, only dd has sen and isn't very observant to what she normally has!

I know you have to stay away from certain foods and about Halal but we aren't sure what is okay and what is not.

Are things like normal dairy milk bar or those boxes of little dairy milk chocolates OK?
Can you suggest anything else please that will be OK that I can buy on a Sunday locally please.

Thank you!

Off-putting for vegetarians, vegans, Muslims AND Jews! I was almost impressed by the epicness of the fail

They tasted fucking great though. Can't understand why it would be an epic fail. Not all food has to comply with religious rules or dietary preferences. They could buy something else, M&S goes out of it's way to make sure it has suitable things in.

AdalindSchade · 21/01/2018 18:11

All rocky road has gelatine in. It's done on purpose! Not an epic fail, just a product some people won't be interested in.
I really didn't know that party rings had gelatine! I thought it was the red colouring.

LaContessaDiPlump · 21/01/2018 18:18

It just seemed to be excluded a fairly big chunk of the potential customer base for no good reason, Eltonjohnssyrup. Gelatin-free marshmallows taste much like gelatin-y ones....

AdalindSchade · 21/01/2018 18:22

Gelatine free marshmallows are nothing like regular ones and more expensive to produce. Most people aren't vegetarian, Muslim or Jewish.

habibihabibi · 21/01/2018 18:35

You can not buy Percy Pigs of any variety in M&S in the Middle East, evem the farmyard friends are ousted. Grin

Fekko · 21/01/2018 18:37

I think the most revolting phrase I see on packs is ‘fish gelatin’. It just sounds more yummy than pork or beef.

LaContessaDiPlump · 21/01/2018 18:37

Ok then - I'm clearly wrong. Mea culpa, mea culpa.

Hmm
Omgineedanamechange · 21/01/2018 19:08

The gelatine in party rings was used to set the icing. It was a royal pain the ass as it had to be stored and handled completely separately to all other ingredients to prevent cross contamination. ‘Twas a happy day indeed when it was taken out.

Omgineedanamechange · 21/01/2018 19:10

And they definately did not have cochineal food colouring.

ThisLittleKitty · 21/01/2018 19:12

Pop tarts also have gelatine. Must be for the same reason.

Quickerthanavicar · 21/01/2018 19:15

Veggie Colin Caterpillars are the nuts.

TheDevilMadeMeDoIt · 21/01/2018 19:37

Freedom marshmallows are delicious!

Talkingfrog · 21/01/2018 21:13

Sounds like you have a lovely daughter OP. Hope you found something and that the birthday girl liked it.
Not sure on the age of your dd. It is worth picking up the odd spare gift when you see one incase you need at short notice. Entertainer often have things on offer for £5 and anything princess etc is usually a safe fall back for a younger girl. I have also stocked up when Claire accessories have their 5 for £5 offer on. (got that idea when dd got given a purse, pen etc from Claires that wouldn't have been bought at full price and saw the offer a while later).
Kitty - my dd gets fed up with haribo as she doesn't like them. I think most do them because they are nut free and cheap to buy in quantity. One child in my dads yr brought in lollies. Not the greatest idea as half of them opened them outside the door and had them in their mouths walking out the gates(down a steep hill!)

midnightmisssuki · 21/01/2018 21:15

Iliketeabagging why the need to be so rude —and unhelpful— ?

numbereightyone · 21/01/2018 21:21

Had some Thorntons chocolates at our friends' house recently. They are Muslim.
I have seen Muslim kids quite happily tuck into Percy Pigs (the gelatine free variety) in the past.

Diaryofapeabody · 21/01/2018 21:40

Oh dear. I really don’t want to be difficult, rude, or to piss on anyone’s parade but ...just why would anyone support halal practices?
Especially with regards to animal slaughter?

Why this level of arse lickery actually? Can’t you give a book token or a boots voucher.? Isn’t there something about this whole post that’s a little too right on for comfort.
Who can support Halal practice? And if so, can you please explain why ?

Flipflopflipflap · 21/01/2018 21:43

Peabody,
I couldn’t give a shit about halal. If you kill something it’s shit for who/whatever you kill? Saying a prayer for it imo sounds lovely.

Flipflopflipflap · 21/01/2018 21:45

Also you sound like you’re being goady as anything, whether deliberate or not. I’m guessing the op is going for sweets because she needs them by tomorrow and as it’s 945 on a Sunday night she’s limited to petrol stations and convenience stores...

Flipflopflipflap · 21/01/2018 21:46

Most Muslims I know love a bit of dairy milk and regularly eat hero and celebrations x your DD sounds lovely well done x

Diaryofapeabody · 21/01/2018 21:51

Flip flop flap
Are you totally dim? A prayer sounds lovely? Before slitting the throat of a terrified animal.

I’d laugh really if it weren’t so sad on many levels. Your education being one.
Goady is a learned insult and one that you have latched onto clearly without the skills to challenge reasoned argument.

Thequeenisdeadboys · 21/01/2018 21:51

teabagging Ask yourself this question : Am I an arrogant arse ? Go figure !

AdalindSchade · 21/01/2018 21:53

Peabody - buying dairy milk isn't supporting halal practices. Just like buying broccoli isn't, or toothpaste. The op was just checking whether dairy milk had anything in that Muslims wouldn't want to eat, not going out of her way to find halal items.

Diaryofapeabody · 21/01/2018 21:55

And before the flip flops proliferate with all their persuasive skills who is willing to make a stand about halal slaughter .
Come on.

AdalindSchade · 21/01/2018 21:55

Also, halal slaughter is cruel, and non halal slaughter is cruel. Intensive meat farming and butchery is inherently cruel.
I have seen a sheep have its throat cut in a truly halal slaughter and it was oblivious to the point when it passed out. That's not how modern abattoirs kill in a halal manner but traditional British abattoirs are just as foul.

Thequeenisdeadboys · 21/01/2018 21:55

If you kill something it’s shit for who/whatever you kill? Saying a prayer for it imo sounds lovely. Ummm, sorry but do not agree that saying a prayer before slaughter is in anyway 'lovely' !!!
