AIBU to ask how much sleep you get?

I know this isn’t an AIBU but I thought I would get more responses here.
I had 4 hours last night and feel absolutely awful today. On average i’d say I get about 6 hours but would love 8

No more than 2hrs unbroken and on average 5-6 per night. I have a 14 month old and a snoring DH.

I really need 9 tbh to feel good but I don't get it. Weekdays I usually get 6 or 7. It's partly my body clock though as I am a night owl, plus I don't stop child, house and bits and bobs work until late so can't go to bed early as it takes me time to relax enough to sleep. Once I'm out I can sleep for ever.

If no kids and it's the weekend (I work full time) I can sleep 11 - 12 hours easily.

Taffeta
I too find that my longest deep sleep is the first part of it, but unfortunately even that's not long enough.

I believe that this is due to my not switching off mentally. I do everything I should do to 'relax', but it is clearly not enough and my brain continues to work and won't go into deep sleep.

I have now come up with some hypothesis that reading to get to sleep is not helping as I thought it was. For years I have fallen asleep reading. I get to that stage where my eyes are closing as I read the page and then I fall asleep quickly, so seemed a very good way to forget about everything else and clear the mind, but I have noticed that two of the rare nights I had a better deep sleep happened when I didn't read. Not sure though as I've tried it again last week and it didn't seem to make a difference!

I track my sleep patterns/quality too

My average nights sleep is 4.06 hours and the quality is around 35-40% Confused

But I've been an insomniac since the age of 15 and I'm now 56 so I can function normally and find things to do while I'm not sleeping.

I wish I knew why I can’t sleep! I’ve been like it since I was 10, and now DS 10 is the same. I’m lying here now knowing 3 or 4 will be my maximum tonight and dreading having to get out and go to work. It’s tough. I’m on a myriad of medication including morphine and tramadol, which would knock most people out, but it has the opposite effect on me!

TrinitySquirrel · 22/01/2018 01:08

About 4hrs a night at the moment and for the past year. I've had 4 full nights sleep in 12 months. I have aged about 10 years and put on 2 stone.

I need a bloody night nanny.

TrinitySquirrel · 22/01/2018 01:09

@dixiestampsagain have you looked at bananas/melatonin?

Dixiestampsagain · 22/01/2018 01:30

I haven’t thought of looking into melatonin but I certainly will, thanks. I may just have a banana sandwich now!

MummySparkle · 22/01/2018 01:35

Abit 6hrs is my average these days. It's not enough and it's always broken / interrupted. If it's not the kids it's DH or the sodding dog. Anyone else have a duvet stealing dog? He's only small (12kg) but somehow he manages to sleep on top of the duvet and prevent me from getting any of it back without sitting up and yanking it out from underneath him.

MummySparkle · 22/01/2018 01:37

Melatonin has been a godsend for some people I know, I keep meaning to ask my GP about it, because I know my natural sleep rhythm is out of whack.

I read the thread about the banana spiders earlier, not sure I can ever eat one again!!!

doubleshotespresso · 22/01/2018 01:45

For the past nearly four years a "good" night is four hours but is more often less....
Primary reason is our utterly nocturnal non-settling DD. Other reasons range from recurring insomnia, work, generally getting things done, anxiety during very bad weeks.
On maybe two out of four weekends I might get DH to takeover and grab a few hours kip- other than this I just mainline coffee.
Not ideal but I'm still up 6am daily if not earlier.

PikachuHeadgear · 22/01/2018 01:45

I'm fine with 6hrs and occasional longer catch-ups, but I often don't get that. I've had insomnia problems for years that I had learned to manage, but now I have a job that comes with overnight on-calls, and I generally do get woken up and have to engage brain (hard to get back to sleep afterwards). All in all, I slip in and out of very disordered sleep, which triggers migraines. The migraines are miserable, if it wasn't for those I wouldn't be that bothered.

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 22/01/2018 01:50

Probably average around 5 - 6 hours per night. It's not enough for me, but reading this thread, I'm not alone!

I end up working late at night when the DC are asleep, I have a wakeful toddler and I love being awake at night! Wretched combo for getting enough rest. It's a sort-of resolution, to get more sleep, although I"m really not doing very well with it.

DaisysStew · 22/01/2018 01:50

The last few months it’s been anywhere from 2-5 hours, 5 hours being a rarity. Stress and some other issues are the reason. I’m drained most days and count down the hours to bedtime only to find myself staring at the ceiling all night.

Last night something just gave in me and I fell asleep fully clothed at 9:00pm and slept undisturbed until 9:00am. Had so much energy today it’s unreal.

Seems like it was a one off though because I’m sat here wired right now. Not even had a coffee today because I really wanted another good sleep. Sad

Purplerain101 · 27/01/2018 16:13

Mine has been varying so much recently. Had 10 hours the other night and 5 hours the night before that. I don’t drink any caffeine and I try and stick to the same sleep schedule each night. It’s really annoying
