I just love going away and have really loved most places. One place in particular really Underwhelmed me...Gibraltar...just like Britain in the sun! I'm sure it has so much to offer, but I couldn't wait to cross the border back to Spain!

Genoa - ugly commercial port dominating the original town. We even took a train up into the hills behind, where there was nothing to do or see. Love the coastline and other places in Italy though, although Sorrento is largely an overpriced tourist dormitory with little to recommend it otherwise.

whatalicedidnext · 21/01/2018 13:40

Surely you are all dissing the places you love to put people off from going so it is less crowded?

I hate the Scottish Highlands, Iceland and all of Cornwall.

theEagleIsLost · 21/01/2018 13:40

Victorian fare = victorian fair.

Though I liked Paris - but we got shown round by friends who lived there. Same with London - DH lived there and explored while he did so knows it really well.

EastMidsMummy · 21/01/2018 13:40

Some miserable cunts on this thread:

New York?? Rome?? Gloucester??

What the fuck were you expecting??

LakieLady · 21/01/2018 13:44

At least I can say I’ve been to Brighton won’t be rushing back

Lol. It's a shithole. I only live a few miles away and go there for 2 reasons only: to buy bras and go to Waterstones to stock up on books. I've tried other large towns that are further away but none of their Waterstones is a patch on the Brighton one.

It is filthy, packed, falling apart, and it does my head in to have to walk past homeless junkies/alkies/beggars every 50 paces (this is not snobbery - my job is working with homeless people and I deal with this fine in a professional setting, but it breaks my heart to see it at weekends as well). There are a few nice shops, but they're usually overpriced, parking is a nightmare (and hideously expensive) and it's depressingly shabby.

Feezles · 21/01/2018 13:44

Cuba in general, but Havana in particular. I wanted to love it, but I never felt safe.

Andthatsthat · 21/01/2018 13:46

Cyprus. Dusty and run down. Maybe just where we went.

CrabappleBiscuit · 21/01/2018 13:49

Crete, I was underwhelmed but I know that’s because it was cold, out of season and we didn’t move out of rethmynon for various tedious reasons, I’d like to give it another chance.

AmysTiara · 21/01/2018 13:49

MsHarry I fear you are wasting your time here. Some people just love to be miserable and moan Grin

theEagleIsLost · 21/01/2018 13:51

See I've been underwhelmed by Brighton's shopping bits - even the shambles - but Brighton promenade bits I loved but I've not been for a few years perhaps it's got more run down.

mrsglowglow · 21/01/2018 13:53

Re San Francisco, we went there 30 years ago and I too remember being shocked at the level of homelessness and drug pushers. We're Londoners and unfortunately, London is as bad now. I did love SF though.

I find it hard to believe that people were underwhelmed by the Grand Canyon!!! The sheer scale blew my mind when I went there.

I can't think of anywhere I've visited where I've been underwhelmed. Maybe I have lower expectations than others.

Grilledaubergines · 21/01/2018 13:53

Barcelona - dump

Manchester/Harrogate/Liverpool - sorry, where is all the "everyone is so friendly and down to earth". Not any time I've been. No friendlier than anywhere else I've been. Although Harrogate has pretty parts.

Oxford - dirty, full

Give me London any day - friendly, helpful, clean, no shortage of things to do. Same with New York - lovely people, amazing buzz.

whirlygirly · 21/01/2018 13:54

Cornwall has no trees? I must be imagining all the green things I can see out of my window then. What an odd thing to claim. Hmm

In fairness I can understand anyone pitching up at Newquay being underwhelmed by cornwall. Eden is hellish in high season, amazing in quieter seasons.

For me, it's marrakech and Washington DC. Also agree with the pp who said Vienna felt grey and drab - it did to me too. I wasn't wowed by Dublin either.

Sweetpea55 · 21/01/2018 13:55

Naples..we were on a cruise and couldnt get past all the pushy reps wanting us to buy tours etc. The small part we did actually see was filthy.

AccidentallyRunToWindsor · 21/01/2018 13:56

Cuba. It was impossible to buy food and the customer service was non existent. Varadero was especially hideous.

Marrakech, just left me a bit 'meh'

Leave Scotland out of it AngryAngryAngry

Taffeta · 21/01/2018 13:57

I thought Gibraltar was awful. It was full of leathery faced brits. A man shouted, ‘Alright Nobby!’ to his mate in a cockney accent, as we sat outside a restaurant. I felt like we were extras in an Eastenders spin off.

🤣🤣🤣 close to the most snobbish thing I’ve ever seen on MN

How dare other Brits live abroad? Especially if they aren’t posh. Hmm

Turquoisetamborine · 21/01/2018 13:58

I love a lot of the places slated on here. Glasgow has fond memories for me as my friend is from there so spent many weekends out shopping, drinking and having fun. I never experienced any unfriendliness although I’m English with a Geordie accent. Was often told they love Geordies.

I loved Brighton and have been several times. I know there’s a lot of homeless people but it’s like any city really. I’ve never taken the kids but would love to take them to Brighton Beach on a sunny day, such a good atmosphere.

For places I wouldn’t rush back to, I found Cabo Roig which is somewhere in Spain (blocked it out I think) to be the most unpleasant place. Full of pimps and prostitutes. Nothing much to do and we never managed to get a bus or taxi the whole sorry week we were there. We brought our flights forward as we couldn’t wait to get home. Also the apartment we’d rented wasn’t that much fun in July with no aircon.

DorisDangleberry · 21/01/2018 14:00

The Cotswolds - great if you like water sports....I don't

Was it raining? It has been known to occasionally rain in the British Isles

RainingOutside99 · 21/01/2018 14:01

Lanzarote! Can't understand the appeal at all. Didn't like Fuerteventura either.

SproutsWithLiverAndOnions · 21/01/2018 14:02

@Yvest: Cascais and Lisbon are fab, we did both of them in one trip.

We had stayed in Cascais a few years beforehand, and loved it that much, we went back and went to Lisbon.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 21/01/2018 14:06

Leave Scotland out of it Angry Angry Angry

Why, please?

keepingbees · 21/01/2018 14:08

I thought I'd like Bristol more than I did. Apart from the suspension bridge and docks, which were nice, the rest seemed like a massive rat run of motorways and seemed very run down in parts.

DorisDangleberry · 21/01/2018 14:10

crunched

The London Eye- looked out of the pod and saw London.

[John Cleese mode]
Well may I ask what you expected to see out of the London Eye? Sydney Opera House perhaps? The Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically......

BlindLemonAlley · 21/01/2018 14:11

Disneyland Florida, I expected to be wowed by a magical experience but I felt like a herded animal being fleeced.
