I just love going away and have really loved most places. One place in particular really Underwhelmed me...Gibraltar...just like Britain in the sun! I'm sure it has so much to offer, but I couldn't wait to cross the border back to Spain!

Hated Amsterdam. The rest of Holland is gorgeous though!

thenettyprofessor · 20/01/2018 22:49

wifeyhun I loved a lot of LA Santa Monica being the best part, amazing beach. Some of LA snobby but no more than central London.

DunnoWhy · 20/01/2018 22:50

bearbehind Yes Norfolk and Suffolk are not in the NE.
I wrote: i havent been to the north of Suffolk Norfolk coast. Therecore i haven't been to the NE coast. I merely mentioned several work colleagues who are from the NE coast who refuse to visit their hometowns for the reasons they mention.

Having said that i adore Scotland. I have wonderful city breaks and other holidays in different parts of Scotland and i loved am of it from Glasgow city to lochs, all of it.

monkeysox · 20/01/2018 22:50

Agree Athens was filthy. Felt uncomfortable going out at night

defineme · 20/01/2018 22:51

The Grand Canyon, have always felt embarrassed by that, pleased to see other people felt the same. I think i was so excited by the panoramic views i has seen in films and my actual eyes couldn't take that much in. I did enjoy seeing vultures close up though!
Whereas, I loved Death Valley and Las Vegas, having expected to absolutely hate them -death valley was so atmospheric and desolate and las vegas was this sparkling wonder rising up out of barren scrub.

monkeysox · 20/01/2018 22:51

Dunno you need to visit Whitby

elQuintoConyo · 20/01/2018 22:51

Barcelona 10 years ago was great. It's a shithole now.

We loved San Francisco when we went in 2010. It didn't feel dodgy dirty or dangerous. I'd love to go back.

treaclesoda · 20/01/2018 22:52

Actually, on thinking about it, I am probably one of life's pessimists and therefore don't visit anywhere expecting it to be the experience of a lifetime. That is probably partly why I have liked everywhere I have visited Grin.

Veronicat · 20/01/2018 22:52

Margate. Fading seaside glory.

MsHarry · 20/01/2018 22:54

treacle I get what you mean. I am quite picky about where I go and do my research so I normally like most places I choose to visit. I don't go to places because everyone else does or to tick a box.

NeilPetark · 20/01/2018 22:54

Dublin, for all the reasons said already. Totally underwhelming.

RavenWings · 20/01/2018 22:54

Morocco - specifically Tangier and Marrakesh. Lots of very sleazy men about.

London - meh, very grey.

San Fran I also didn't like due to there being so many homeless Sad But then the States doesn't really appeal to me.

Reyjavik - the city is very dull and ugly but once you leave it, the country is gorgeous.

MsHarry · 20/01/2018 22:54

Margate. Fading seaside glory.
But I know that without going. What were you expecting?

Els1e · 20/01/2018 22:54

Would agree with Copenhagen. Nice enough city but mermaid was little and Tivoli Gardens was a fairground.
Also agree with comments about Avebury. So much better and interesting than Stonehenge.

MexicanBob · 20/01/2018 22:54

Oslo was not a let down but it was certainly the dullest capital city I've ever stayed in and almost as pricey as Dublin (which is saying something - we ran out of cash in Dublin on one trip there!)

Shimmershimmerandshine · 20/01/2018 22:55

I think you're spot on treacle is about the gap between expectations and reality Grin

wifeyhun · 20/01/2018 22:55

Thank you netty, glad to hear something positive.

We are also also going to Las Vegas, I love tacky places though, Benidorm etc so we should be fine.

RainbowPastel · 20/01/2018 22:55

The Isle of Wight. The most boring holiday we have ever had. My neighbour goes every year but I cannot understand why. We found nothing to do.

LinoleumBlownapart · 20/01/2018 22:56

I found a lot of the touristy USA a bit "put on" with no soul. Grand Canyon, Florida, Califórnia coast. I loved New York though but I much prefered the states or areas that are less touristy, they had soul, Minnesota and Utah I loved, inland California and Northern Florida too.

Manchester never thrilled me, I lived there for a while. But I'm not a fan of London either. Birmingham and Glasgow I like because they don't pretend to be something they're not.

BrimFire · 20/01/2018 22:57

Agree completely with Laurie on Venice.
Amsterdam
Miami Beach
St Ives
can all be added to the list.of places that I never want to return to.

Bath definitely thinks too much of itself and I also find Bath stone depressing.
I get why people don't rate Barcelona but once you get past the graffiti and smelly, dark bits the advantages of a city with every type of landscape plus sun plus cheap cava and nice food compensates.

Jassmells · 20/01/2018 22:57

Not getting the Dublin hate. LoveDublin always found it impeccably clean and friendly. Think how they managed to get the CCD so central is impressive.

MsHarry · 20/01/2018 22:57

I enjoyed a lovely Easter holiday on IOW. Didn't have great expectations but stayed in a lovely place next to Osborne House and the weather was 70c and could drive around the island easily.

somewhereovertherain · 20/01/2018 22:58

Haven’t been to many places I’ve not enjoyed but tend to avoid british touristy hotspots and try and Head to places out of season or at the end of the season.

Has pleasantly surprised by Lanzarote but went in Feb when very few tourists.

and loved the Algarve in Jan/Feb but looking at the hotel we stayed in would think the summer would be awful.

One stand out disappointment for me was Universal in Hollywood very over priced and busy and most the rides weren't on a par with other theme parks I’ve been too round the world.

Loved Malta but lived there for a bit so new where to avoid. Same with Dublin.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 20/01/2018 22:58

Lake Garda, in August; too busy, too hot and too many other people!

PETRONELLAS · 20/01/2018 22:58

Naples. Most unsafe I’ve ever felt. Thought even my sunglasses were going to get ripped off my face.
