I just love going away and have really loved most places. One place in particular really Underwhelmed me...Gibraltar...just like Britain in the sun! I'm sure it has so much to offer, but I couldn't wait to cross the border back to Spain!

AlpacaLypse and others who mention Stonehenge: I am going in a few weeks, just bought tickets online. Now I am worried! What's wrong with it? And I am right in understanding I won't be able to get close to the stones?

londonrach · 20/01/2018 22:30

Banff, canada...whole museum on how much they hate the british. Vvvvv rude locals there. Agree thecastle was stunning but like dublin a place i never go again

Jassmells · 20/01/2018 22:30

@VinoISVeritas Georgian council estate 😂😂😂 I think that's pretty accurate

AnyFucker · 20/01/2018 22:31

I must be strange but pretty much all places I have made an effort to visit have had some redeeming features at least

MsHarry · 20/01/2018 22:31

Hugely underwhelmed by Bath. Georgian council estate.

Deary me!

NewYearNiki · 20/01/2018 22:31

Stockholm too.

Boring as hell and disgustingly overpriced

CheeseyToast · 20/01/2018 22:31

It's a lot to do with expectations. I think just expect all famous places to be crowded and expensive, then you won't set yourself up for so much disappointment.

I didn't enjoy Venice or Florence at all because they were so very crowded, but I adore Rome, absolutely love it. I'm used to big city life and I found it very lively and manageable with the incredible bonus of phenomenal architecture everywhere you looked.

It also makes a big difference where you stay. I if you're in a cool hotel it's a lot easier to enjoy yourself than in a noisy, grubby backpackers.

I agree with the SAN Francisco comments. Stunningly beautiful but grimly depressing to see such a terrible scale of homelessness.

And the locals seem so affected and self consciously cool.

I prefer LA which is unashamedly weird lol

I don't understand the Grand Canyon comments though. I found it literally breathtakingly amazing.

Barcelona too, fabulous city..

And New York - absolutely love it. I'm used to big city life though and also love coffee and galleries so lots to enjoy in NYC.

MsHarry · 20/01/2018 22:31

Put me on that council house list!!!!

StoneColdDiva · 20/01/2018 22:31

For me, my underwhelming spot is Venice. I think it is astonishing beautiful but it feels to me like an outpost of a Disneyland. Nothing feels real, it feels fake. I know that might make me a heather but I just really dislike the atmosphere which reminded me for all the world of Portmeiron in Wales, another disappointment.

TalkinPeace · 20/01/2018 22:32

Cornwall, there are some nice bits, but much of it is meh. And no trees, which doesn't enhance a place in my mind.
Cornwall ..... no trees .....
try Padstow and area and stop being so blinkered

CheeseyToast · 20/01/2018 22:33

Bath is magnificent!

LaurieMarlow · 20/01/2018 22:33

Oslo I'm not impressed by. Tourist attractions exhausted in a weekend. Some of the things I take for granted on holiday (eating out, going for drinks, shopping) prohibitively expensive. Too damn cold.

Stockholm on the other hand is amazing. Very underrated.

londonrach · 20/01/2018 22:33

Stone..yes you wont go near the stones....as someone who travelled back and forth on a large road nearby i probably got a overall better view. Interested education centre. However avebury so much better and you can get right next to the stones

Proseccoagain · 20/01/2018 22:33

Burleigh House, not worth the money we paid to go round it; Rome; Disneyland in LA. Loved San Fran though, have been twice, a!so loved Vancouver.

NewYearNiki · 20/01/2018 22:33

@StoneColdDiva

There's nothing wrong with Stonehenge. I enjoyed it.

People do.expect to be able to walk among them and touch them and you can't. It was built in what 4000bc. They have to preserve the site and it is roped off and you can't get near the stones just look from a distance.

Thistlebelle · 20/01/2018 22:33

That’s because you are a happy positive person AF Grin

I didn’t like Gibraltar but the Barbary Apes were interesting and the view of the shipping lanes from above was worth seeing.

user764329056 · 20/01/2018 22:34

Venice has unfortunately become a bit like a theme park on water

I found Japan strange as if everyone acts the same, no individualism but a strong undercurrent of weirdness, it felt soulless to me

londonrach · 20/01/2018 22:35

Agree re grand canyan (just a big hole in the ground).....now bryce canyon will blow you away!!! We arrived just after a light snow fall and the sun was shining!

franksidebottom · 20/01/2018 22:35

Interesting thread, some of the places on the overrated list I love, such as Lisbon, Lanzarote, San Francisco, Dublin and Waddesdon ManorGrin.

I do find Oxford overrated, I just don't get it, there didn't seem like much to do. But perhaps I didn't see the best of it.

butIamrightright · 20/01/2018 22:35

I do think London has one of the best skylines, & I absolutely love Tower Bridge. I used to drive my parents mad as I wanted to watch it open every weekend.

MsHarry · 20/01/2018 22:35

It was built in what 4000bc.
The magic went for me when I discovered it was rebuilt. Also seen it from nearby A road everytime we go to Devon and Cornwall.

TalkinPeace · 20/01/2018 22:36

London / Newyear
Go at the winter solstice - then you get to go inside the stones
its FAB
was one of our best family Christmas treats ever

LaurieMarlow · 20/01/2018 22:37

Venice has unfortunately become a bit like a theme park on water

This is exactly what I thought. It doesn't feel like a real city where people live, work play.

MsHarry · 20/01/2018 22:37

How do you 'get' Oxford? It's a university town. What were you expecting?

user764329056 · 20/01/2018 22:37

Toronto has been called New York run by the Swiss which is a good description, it runs really efficiently but that takes away any identity is what I felt when I was there
