To believe “wind the bobbin up” is inappropriate and to ask my child’s Nursery not to sing it.

Wind the bobbin up originated in the cotton mill towns of the north of England in Victorian times. As anyone who knows a bit about a bit history can tell you, the cotton mills were horrendous places which horrifically exploited women and children, forcing them to do dangerous work in appalling conditions for little pay.

How can it be right to trivialise these horrors by getting children to sing a light-hearted ditty about it... It’s offensive to the memory of all those who suffered these horrendous conditions and experienced serious injury or even death as a result of hideously exploitative working practices.

All nursery rhymes have dark meanings behind them. Ring o Roses is about the black plague. And Lucy Locket is about losing virginity. So are you suggesting that all nursery rhymes are banned? Of course not because you're joking😂

coconuttella · 20/01/2018 22:16

Errrr..so this isn’t a TAAT or really about that thread OP?

I took the basic theme of that thread and I took it in another direction. This thread simply isn’t discussing that thread and besides, I posted everything i wanted to on that thread. If this was directly related to it I would simply have added it to that thread.

Obvious wind up is obvious

ineedamoreadultieradult · 20/01/2018 22:17

This has to be a wind up?
Ring a ring a roses is about children dying from the plague and Jack gets potentially fatally injured collecting water, shall we ban them all?

RainbowGlitterFairy · 20/01/2018 22:17

Little Miss Muffet is clearly sexist, reinforcing the stereotype that women are so feeble and weak they run away from spiders... To be fair I am pretty sure that included a lot of foreign spiders that 16th century doctors wouldn't have antidotes to, I'd probably scream and run away if i were her, plus the curds and whey is obviously a reference to his work on good nutrition, which is at least a fairly positive message to reinforce.

Today 20:49 coconuttella

Of course, I’m not serious.... I just couldn’t resist starting this thread after reading on another thread how there seems to be some who believe we can’t reference that alludes to anything about slavery or concentration camps

I knew it, I remember you on that thread earlier coco. Think some of us are spending too much time on MN, but my telly’s broken down, what’s your excuse? Grin

Orangesaretheonly · 20/01/2018 22:18

No excuse really.... I agree I’ve spent too much time on MN today so will call it a night.

Sorry OP

This thread is discussing the other thread. It’s disingenous to suggest that it isn’t.

Apologies MNHQ, this is a TAAT.... was one of your comments.

The purpose of this thread is to have a bit of a bitch and a giggle about those that didn’t agree with you on the other thread. That’s why it’s been taken here.

It’s kinda got that ‘All those who are on my side come play in the top playground’ vibe about it...

And yep, I’m offended by it.

RainbowGlitterFairy · 20/01/2018 22:23

No need for apologies coco i'm finding the thread fascinating, plus you know, I am a TA that has used phrases like 'what did your last slave die of?' and 'do I look like a servant' so my view of whats offensive is probably off anyway Wink

Sound like fairly standard comments.
One of my old colleagues used to say 'put thr scissors away. I am neither your mam nor your slave'.
I joke about torture.
It's a hard life being wound up by everything.

Rumbaintheraindrops · 20/01/2018 22:28

Some people really need some problems in life if they are getting wound up about bloody Wind the Bobbin Up.
Also a bit perplexed that you didn't pick up on a lot of rhymes that are a lot worse
Just thinking how far could this be taken if this way of thinking catches on
Georgie porgy- sexual predator
Ring a ring a roses - glorifying the plague
Wee willie winky- obviously a peeping tom
Jack and Jill- health and safety risk sending two children up that hill to get some water
Sing a song of sixpence- animal cruelty
Humpty dumpy- could have been a suicide attempt
Old mother Hubbard- Animal neglect
Rock a bye baby- child neglect
Old women who lived in a shoe- child abuse
As I was going to St Ives- promotes Polygamy with the seven wives
Cock Robin- murder
And of course Ba Ba black sheep - racist (nothing to do with the fact that sheep on the whole come in two colours and the word "black" went a lot better after "ba ba" then white)
And don't even get me started on nursery rhymes and fairy tales
Yep I know the above are all stupid but you can take nearly every single nursery rhyme and find something wrong with it.

You weren't the women who tried to get sleeping beauty banned are you?

Motoko · 20/01/2018 22:28

Oh Mary, are you like your namesake? This thread has mostly been a discussion about nursery rhymes. It's been an enjoyable thread to read.

Motoko · 20/01/2018 22:30

Rumbaintheraindrops RTFT!

Marymaymay · 20/01/2018 22:31

motoko

This ain’t a thread about nursery rhymes.

If you think it is, you’re wrong.

Motoko · 20/01/2018 22:34

Well, my post was, as were others.

Really it is a song, the kids singing it don't give a shit they just like the rhyme. However if you look at all nursery rhymes and fairy tales you will realise they are all very grim do you want them banned too?

overduemamma · 20/01/2018 22:44

Jesus Christ... you are what's wrong with the world at the moment!!

Kelzbellz27 · 20/01/2018 22:46

really?! i think you should thank your lucky stars that this is your big worry and see the song as what the children singing it do, its has fun actions that encourage hand eye co-ordination and is easily remembered! if i knew how to do a biscuit you'd get it.

Rumbaintheraindrops · 20/01/2018 22:48

I did RTFT and I was tongue in cheek along with everyone else who has posted since the second page

Rumbaintheraindrops · 20/01/2018 22:48

Sorry Op I did mean to put a Grin in my post to make it clear it was also tongue in cheek

wtf2015 · 20/01/2018 22:49

Oh my life!! Dc5 is 10, I adored that song, as did all my children. It will be in my brain for days now. Thank youSmile
