Unmarried middle-class parents more likely to see their children drop in social status

Children of professional parents who were not married had a 53 per cent chance of being on benefits, compared to 37 per cent for those whose parents had married.
(The Telegraph 20th January 2018)

Would you seriously consider marriage to safeguard the future status of your children?

What a galloping barrel of classist BATWANK.

Why nobody has linked the article before now is beyond me, unless they have and I missed it..

DivisionBelle · 20/01/2018 19:48

Crumbs : Neither of those studies compares long term stable cohabiting relationships with married relationships in the same socio-economic group.

“Well a certain knowledge of French means you're educated.”
It could mean you are a migrant from a French speaking country in West or North Africa, for example...with or without an education.

DivisionBelle · 20/01/2018 19:50

10/10 for ‘BATWANK’. I like that.

MexicanBob · 20/01/2018 19:56

Why does being on benefits equate to a drop in social staus?

CharizMa · 20/01/2018 19:57

Well, it's hard not to let it. People feel entitled to judge how you spend your money. They lump you in with ''scroungers'' and you feel owned.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 20/01/2018 19:59

Because social class is usually occupationally derived by job one does
Eg managerial, professional are classified middle class
Manual and unskilled are classified working class
Being in receipt of benefits usually indicate low pay or no pay

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 20/01/2018 20:08

There is loads of interesting research on social class in uk and Owen Jones is cracking on this topic
Most sociologists would agree that the most important determinants of an individual's social class position are their
wealth
income
occupation

An LSE 2013 study reported 7 categories of social class
the elite[ 6% of the population]

the established middle class [25%]

the technical middle class [6%]

the new affluent workers [15%]

the traditional working class [14%]

the emergent service workers [19%]

the precariat or precarious proletariat [19%]

I think its worse for kids when the mum has gotten pregnant on purpose to trap the man and force marriage. So best not to get married and raise in two happy homes instead of one unhappy home.

twattymctwatterson · 20/01/2018 20:12

What a pile of wank (terribly middle class of me)

JacquesHammer · 20/01/2018 20:14

I think its worse for kids when the mum has gotten pregnant on purpose to trap the man and force marriage

I think it's worse for kids when men don't wear condoms and take responsibility for their own reproductive organs...

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 20/01/2018 20:16

Newman?women trapping men by getting pg.did a pomander fall on your head
What a thoroughly ridiculous statement

NotACleverName · 20/01/2018 20:18

I think its worse for kids when the mum has gotten pregnant on purpose to trap the man and force marriage.

Poor men. If only someone would invent some kind of sheeth they could put over their penis, as to avoid pregnancy.

Thehogfather · 20/01/2018 20:29

Imo the drop in social status if your income drops is more something the wannabe mc have to believe in.

Admitting that someone like me when I was a young lone parent on income support was still mc because of my upbringing/ background shatters the illusion that class is about owning cake forks and your perceived superiority to those with less money than you.

Likewise admitting the person on a zero hour contract and state benefits is in essence no different to your working class parents, just born at a time when affordable housing and secure jobs aren't easily available is a bit too close for comfort. That person needs to be low class, not working class like their parents. Let alone admitting that person could be you in different circumstances.

That sort of person needs class to be about money to convince themselves they are mc.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 20/01/2018 20:31

I guess we're middle class, and we're certainly unmarried. One of the reasons is that the Church isn't keen. It's not alway as simple as all that.

Moussemoose · 20/01/2018 20:33

Oh oh oh oh this is me! I'm so excited.

My children will be thrilled to know they might end up 'working class'. Hide the balsamic vinegar and get out the ketchup!

ButchyRestingFace · 20/01/2018 21:09

In answer to the OP, I would seriously consider marriage to safeguard my own future.

The kids can go and get fucked.

"The figures were based on analysis of 20,000 adults from the 1958 National Child Development Survey cohort and 1970 British Cohort Study."

This says it all really. 1958 & 1970. 🙄

newyearfabulousness · 20/01/2018 21:25

I think its worse for kids when the mum has gotten pregnant on purpose to trap the man and force marriage. Yes this is a terrible thing, and rife. Forced marriage is a big issue, I hear, for western men.

Poor men. If only someone would invent some kind of sheeth they could put over their penis, as to avoid pregnancy.

newyearfabulousness · 20/01/2018 21:27

The "report" is based on outdated data and full of loaded and judgemental statements.
But I think most of us know that stability is good for children and it does seem that the relationships of married couples tend to have more longevity than non married couples.

MargeryFenworthy · 20/01/2018 21:42

Personally I'm all for marriage. But then I'm a Catholic and wouldn't have considered having children without being married. There are are very few unmarried couples in our circles.

CharizMa · 20/01/2018 22:04

jayzusss Marjorie. you remind me why I am not catholic.

CharizMa · 20/01/2018 22:06

Exactly notaclevername if only

Jux · 20/01/2018 22:23

It's all bollocks, and biased bollocks.

paxillin · 20/01/2018 22:45

Link the study please, OP.

RoseWhiteTips · 21/01/2018 01:06

So the “working class” only use ketchup?
Riiight.
