To think the boots 70% sale is total greed?

Llcoolj33 · 20/01/2018 10:06

My boots had 50% off for 3 weeks.
Nobody touched it hardly, ailes were empty.
Yesterday 8am ..50 people outside waiting to get in.
Then shelves empty by 9.30 am
People grabbing and pushing.
Clearing the shelves with their arms.
Buying 7 of the same thing.
Greed?
You weren’t bothered at 50% !!

I volunteer in a charity shop - our back room is rammed with Baylis and Harding gift sets which I can only imagine were unwanted CHristmas gifts.

HildaZelda · 20/01/2018 11:55

I think it's total greed on Boots behalf. If they can sell that stuff at 70% off and still make a profit, imagine how much they're ripping us off by charging full price.
In general I think Boots is too expensive for everything anyway. I don't shop there anymore unless it's something I really can't get elsewhere. My local Superdrug isn't the most glamorous looking place but has much better deals. Also the staff there are way nicer. The staff in Boots (my local store anyway) are incredibly ignorant and seem to have a problem with the fact that there are customers in the shop.

ThePinkOcelot · 20/01/2018 11:57

They still had loads of Zoella advent calendars in my local Boots. Still at £25! Even if they’d been reduced to £10 they would still be a rip off!

YellowMakesMeSmile · 20/01/2018 11:57

Most of it will end up on EBay or sit going off in a cupboard to be gifted next year. There's a reason companies change the design each year, people can tell an old gift set from current stock.

Hellywelly10 · 20/01/2018 12:00

I think boots is expensive. Most stuff is cheaper elsewhere. Soap and glory is overrated.

BlindLemonAlley · 20/01/2018 12:04

So next Christmas we will have the recipients of this stuff moaning about thoughtless giftsGrin

gamerwidow · 20/01/2018 12:07

Yes it’s wrong to push and shove abc act like animals just to get a bargain definitely. I can’t get angry at people refusing to buy at 50% but then buying at 70% discount. Things are only worth what people are prepared to pay for them.

meredintofpandiculation · 20/01/2018 12:12

I’m talking about the people who ransack the shop to sell on etc.
If that’s not greedy,I don’t know what is.
Trying to make some money in a society where opportunities for those at the lower and are very limited?

Agree I find behaviour at sales. as reported in press, very distasteful.

LovingLola · 20/01/2018 12:12

Really? Would people really know that Soap and Glory tat from last year is different to Soap and Glory tat from this year?

DotCottonDotCom · 20/01/2018 12:17

It's not so much the greed, its the people who buy them?

If its stockpiling for gifts I'd rather not receive such a gift, it's thoughtless to me.

Besides soap and glory IS seriously overrated , I dont get it, its tat!

Lweji · 20/01/2018 12:24

You seem to forget we are animals. It's absolutely normal behaviour when competing for resources.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 20/01/2018 12:25

I went in on way home from hospital and as rather amused that even at 70% off they still can’t shift the crappy zoella advent calendar.

Buxtonstill · 20/01/2018 12:25

If it offends you that much, then don’t go next year...

WeAllHaveWings · 20/01/2018 12:26

Some lucky people are getting old make up and toiletries for Christmas next year!

A lot of these cheap products really only have an 12-18 month shelf life before they start splitting and deteriorating.

ChocolateWombat · 20/01/2018 12:28

I was in my local Boots at 9am. What shocked me was that people were breaking open the packaging to look at what was in the boxes and then just putting them back on the shelf with damaged packaging, tissue paper over-flowing - no one was going to buy those sets. Why do they think it is acceptable to behave like that in their bid for a bargain?

And loads of Soap and Glory. It was popular about 3 years ago and since, Boots has tried to cash in and over produced the big sets especially - not so popular now, hence the piles of stuff left.

Trouble is, people know the 70% sale is coming and MOney Saving Expert publish the date so it's become a bit of a thing. To be honest, if this is stuff you want for yourself or to gift, buy it as 50% off when there's still a decent range. And yes, most people do t want to receive this stuff - it's a fairly desperate present in most cases.

RubyLennoxExists · 20/01/2018 12:30

It's called capitalism

ZoopDragon · 20/01/2018 12:31

I agree OP. It's like when Tesco puts out the trolley of free food (out of date stuff) and a crowd of people (who have been lingering around waiting) run to it, jostling and elbowing, and swipe armfuls into their trollies! They're really aggressive and shove each other aside. I feel sorry for anyone less physically able who might want some, they don't stand a chance. It's greedy, uncivilised and embarrassing to watch.

tillytoodles1 · 20/01/2018 12:32

I was in the bread aisle in a supermarket and a woman was standing by the reduced fresh bread. I waited for her to get what she wanted but she said she was waiting for the bread to go down to 10p. I picked up a loaf and she said "that's the one I was waiting for" It was 20p! And she didn't look like a poor woman waiting to feed her starving kids before anyone says anything.

k2p2k2tog · 20/01/2018 12:36

Is it not greed on the part of Boots to be selling goods at such outrageously overpriced prices in the first place?

Really??? It's basic economics. You charge what people are prepared to pay.

Or, you price something outrageously high so that it doesn't sell, then you can reduce it by 70% and still make a profit, convincing people that they've got a bargain when they haven't really. It's not "outrageous". It's business.

Cassimin · 20/01/2018 12:38

I went in for flavourless toothpaste and ended up spending a fortune.
The girls in my family love soap and glory so I buy it every xmas anyway.
Bought 6 boxes and other bits.
Have put them away until next xmas.
That's 6 less things to worry about next December.
There was no pushing or grabbing involved as it was piled on pallets.
Didn't have any flavourless toothpaste though!

bananasandwicheseveryday · 20/01/2018 12:45

I don't tend to use Boots, apart from when I need to buy a particular brand that is otherwise not available on the high street, because in the main I find them ridiculously expensive (own brand ibuprofen is three times the price of other companies own brands ). I don't really have a problem with people buying stuff when its cheaper, for some, that's how they survive. Pushing and shoving isn't great, but honestly? If they are that desperate to buy overpriced rat? Let them have it.

ChocolateWombat · 20/01/2018 12:45

Yes, it's simply business.
And Boots relies on a bit of a trumpet fanfare being made about the 70% to boost demand. People think it's a bargain and get there early and buy far more than they need - helping Boots clear their surplus stock. They will factor in what % of the goods will sell at full price, at 3 for 2, at 50% off, at 70% off and will be damaged or never sold - it's all part of their pricing policy to get revenue in and make profit.
No one is forced to buy at any of these stages of pricing and Boots both supply the market because there is demand for these goods and also fuel demand by trumpeting the bargains and through advertising. Firms are doing it all over the country for all kind of goods.

The hysteria over sales, nimcluding grabbing etc has become part of it. I expect that in a way Boots likes and encourages it - because it gets publicity, and here we are discussing it - and next year even more people will know about 70% sales.

Oysterbabe · 20/01/2018 12:47

More fool them buying that shit.

greendale17 · 20/01/2018 12:53

Same happens at the Next sales- people just grab the entire rail of clothes regardless. Pushing, shoving disgusting behaviour

BattleaxeGalactica · 20/01/2018 12:53

I bought two or three gift sets from Boots at 50% off

I also bought some Lynx and Dove sets from Superdrug for dd,ds and dh before Christmas because they like them and they were such a good price it would have been rude to refuse Grin. They will use them over the next few months. This pushing and grabbing in person isn't a new thing though. Anyone remember the regularly televised scenes on the opening day at the Harrods sale back in the day?
