To be baffled by people who don't put liners in their bathroom bins

witchofzog · 19/01/2018 10:57

At least 2 of my friends don't. When I moved in with dp I realised he doesn't. And my job involves me being in people's homes and many of them don't either.

I just don't get it. We don't do this with our kitchen bins which albeit are a lot messier, but some unsavoury things go in bathroom bins too

I find it really grim when I realise that dp has emptied the bathroom bin and not put a liner in it. Inevitably one of us will end up scraping one of the dsd's partially wrapped sanitary towels from the side of the bin. We wouldn't have to do this if there was a liner.

Do you put a liner in yours?

I use a recycled carrier bag, Disinfect bin every now and then. Not much goes in the bathroom bin but I don't understand people who don't have one.

Thursdaydreaming · 19/01/2018 16:16

YADNBU that sounds horrid. Used tampons, dental floss, cotton pads and face wipes to remove make up, cotton buds, condoms and tissues. Basically everything that goes in the bin is disgusting! And I don't see how it's better for the environment to bag each individual gross item in its own purpose bought plastic sack, rather than use an old supermarket carrier bag for a bin liner.

RhiannonOHara · 19/01/2018 16:19

Oh Christ, OP, what have you done? These kind of threads always go weird.

Anyway. no, YANBU. Who the jeff wants to have to scrape out the contents of a bathroom bin (well any bin, really)? And why would anyone not just make life easier and nicer and use a bag? Confused

I won't even touch the issue of 'to have or not to have a bathroom bin'.

RandomUsernameHere · 19/01/2018 16:20

I always put a liner in, but in an effort to reduce waste I don't throw it out every time I empty the bin. I usually just tip the contents into a bigger bin and only replace the liner if something is stuck to it or it's dirty.

wowfudge · 19/01/2018 16:21

@Sparklingbrook - I have now realised that I am drawn to bathroom bin threads. Which says something about me!

AlpacaLypse · 19/01/2018 16:22

With teenage girls in the house and myself still using sanpro, a lined lidded bin within easy reach of every loo is vital. A nine pack of loo roll comes in a plastic bag that fits perfectly as a bin liner. There is also a basket near every loo which is for any recyclable stuff that needs to be disposed of. In fact we've got the same system in every room bar the sitting room. Our council is a fortnightly waste collection, alternating between recycling and residual waste, and it's quite easy to get into a routine of emptying the baskets one week and the little icky stuff bins the other. I find the amount of loo roll used by teenage girls (what DO they do with it?!) means about the right number of handy bin size bags are being generated on average.

MikeUniformMike · 19/01/2018 16:23

The people I know who don't have bins usually have a pile of bin stuff on the floor - cap off the razor, loo roll cardboard, soap wrapper etc.
Nothing dirty but not nice.

Grilledaubergines · 19/01/2018 16:24

No bathroom bin here. No bin other thank kitchen bin. But it is lined.

Grilledaubergines · 19/01/2018 16:25

Any bathroom packaging etc is taken down to the kitchen bin straight away so no piles of anything.

NeilPetark · 19/01/2018 16:27

Yes always. I don’t want to be scraping out the contents of the bathroom bin.

Why do people put loo roll tubes and shampoo bottles in the bathroom bin? Don’t you recycle them? Or do you fish them out when you empty the bin?

Recycleable items get taken straight downstairs in our house. I have no wish to go fishing through a bin.

ExConstance · 19/01/2018 16:29

How very odd - what is this icky stuff that goes in bins? I only have toilet roll middles and plastic bottles in mine, which I take down for recycling weekly. My bins are wicker too, what a sin.

Blessyourheart · 19/01/2018 16:32

No bins any where there than the kitchen, no liner required.

Bin in the kitchen has liners.

barefoofdoctor · 19/01/2018 16:35

Nope as nobody puts anything vile in our bathroom bin.

ZoopDragon · 19/01/2018 16:35

I don't always bother. I just wash out the bin every few days with hot water and dettol.

LakieLady · 19/01/2018 16:38

No liner here, but post-menopausal so no sanpro either. The bin has its own plastic liner, which I clean with spray and a cloth after emptying.

It only has used wipes, cotton wool and cotton buds in it, so not yucky at all.

witchofzog · 19/01/2018 16:40

Wow. This had a much bigger response than expected. Smile

OMG DailyMaileatmyshit doesn't have any floss! Please tell us you have a water flosser or this thread could really kick off!

JudiDenchsBloomers · 19/01/2018 16:45

We have a septic tank so have to dispose of tampons/towels/face wipes into the bin, or accept major consequences later down the line. Of course you'd line it!

JacquesHammer · 19/01/2018 16:45

I genuinely don't get what's "yucky" about sanitary towels.

And if you inadvertently touch one, well aren't you in a bathroom where you can wash your hands?!

MikeUniformMike · 19/01/2018 16:46

Recyclables go in recycling bin. Bathroom stuff like used cotton wool an cotton buds go in the lined and zoflorad bin. I rarely clean my ears with cotton buds and only use organic cotton wool in an emergency.

wiltingfast · 19/01/2018 17:18

No liner here

Sanpro used to go into a nappy bag however bodyform towels now come with a cover that turns into a v effective little bag. So I use that instead.

witchofzog · 19/01/2018 17:23

Jacques I wash my hands after. That goes without saying. But of course scraping someone elses used sanitary towel from the side of a bin is unpleasant. Old blood smells pretty bad for a start

BlackeyedSusan · 19/01/2018 17:26

took ex a year to learn the hard way that bathroom bins needed to be lined. it was his job as I got fed up of him putting stuff in before the liner.

KeiraTwiceKnightley · 19/01/2018 17:39

Ours don't get lined. But sanitary stuff goes straight into kitchen bin and the other stuff is not dirty. Trying to cut plastic waste as a P.O. said.

claralaraloo · 19/01/2018 17:41

I'm baffled by how many MNers are baffled by the simplest of differences.

Can you explain why exactly I should line my bathroom bin please?
