AIBU to ask re working 2 jobs & keeping it quiet?

So I’ve recently been offered a position in a local school.

Pros: location, good career prospects & will enable me to start some accountancy study which will help my career long term.
Cons: shite pay & only 2 days a week so I lose my 30 hours funding plus the nursery/childminder want a minimum of 2 days. DD starts school in September so a short term issue.

If I get offered an additional pt role where I could potentially negotiate the hours across 3 days instead of 4 (have interviewed for 2 roles) will both employers know I have secondary employment. To make things more complicated I’m also run a small business occasionally doing consulting work in my old career but want to wind this down.

Does that make sense?

I'm sure that your employers will need to know due to your tax code etc, and you normally have to declare for working time directive etc. Why would you not want them to know?

Why should it matter if each employer knows that you have another PT job? So long as you're not apparently planning to be in two places at the same time, which it doesn't sound like you are, it's fine.

The book keepers who process your PAYE for each one will probably see the relevant details. However it's not unusual for people to have multiple income sources.

In most cases I wouldn’t need to keep it quiet & my 1st employer wouldn’t have a problem with it. Its just because I’ve applied for a few roles that ideally want you pt over 5 days. For example if I negotiated a new job across 3 days for childcare reasons etc then it would look bad if I had another role.

None of their business what you do when you are not working for them!

Most places I've worked (big companies) most definitely require you to disclose any other jobs you may have - could be different if it's a small company, but you'd have to read the contract to find out.

5plus is wrong. My employer specifically forbids other employment without their agreement.

That could be the case teabagging but in a lot of cases its probably an unfair and unenforceable term and almost certainly would be for low paid part time work.

You would have to be in a well paid salaried job and there to be confidentiality or business sensitivity issues for a clause like that to be legally enforcable.

We have to ask permission for a 2nd job it’s in our employment contract.

I would imagine unless you are working for a competitor it would be an unfair and unenforceable term

I currently have 3 jobs

My main job require I inform them due to the nature of my work. I am strictly prohibited to work within the same industry as my main job!

Luckily my 2nd and 3rd job are care roles.

I haven’t split my tax code so I pay 20% tax on my of my other jobs.

Employers normally require you to inform them.

Thanks all I’m probably crazy trying to even juggle 2. I just really like the look of 2 of them & wish I could do a taster of each & see which one is best. They are both quite different so hard to decide.

Regardless of enforceability of contract, you have to confirm to hmrc that your second job is not your only job. In my company this is done via an hmrc starter form or p46 which goes via payroll.

Don't tell them. My employer used it against me. Never trust them.

Arrange what you need to with the tax office directly to make it legal tax wise, but your employer doesn't need to know.

You might have it in your contract that you are not allowed a second job so don't give them a chance to ruin the opportunity.

I work 2 jobs. It's in both of my contracts that I disclose them and one of the contracts also has words to the effect of it having the be my primary job

I must work over 40 hours a week now however needs must and all that.

My main job aren’t bothered that I have another job just as long as it wasn’t the same industry. They were slightly miffed I didn’t want to up my hours with them (got a 2nd job as i hate working for them and need a back up for when the stress finally gets the better of me and I jack it all in)

I think all my jobs know about each other. They don’t interfere with each other.
