To think there are no nice dining tables anywhere in the entire world?

Ok, I know I'm being unreasonable.

But I can't for the life of me find a new dining table. (This is probably because I'm looking in the wrong places).

I like

  • Scandiwegie style design, at the contemporary rather than the traditional end, definitely NOT rustic
  • light wood, with proper planks not butcher block strips (my current table from Ikea is butcher block and it's too fussy)
  • tapered legs and a certain degree of lightness in the design - nothing too heavy, thick etc.
  • must feel like proper wood, not veneery
  • must be quite narrow, and quite long (extending?) to fit well in the space

If you have a fabulous table, please tell me about it. My budget is probably going to be somewhere around £1k.

YANBU, there are none. I want a square, dark wood, fairly large dining table to replace the Ikea monster we have just now. It doesn’t exsist, I’ve been looking for ages.

Strawberryshortcake40 · 17/01/2018 15:18

I think there's one like that in John Lewis. Have you looked there? Sorry haven't got enough signal to search their website!

whiskyowl · 17/01/2018 15:19

There is an Ebbe Gehl one in JL. It looks great in pictures, but it's quite veneery in real life, unfortunately. I was SO diasppointed when I saw it!

YABU with £1000 budget employ a carpenter and get one made

maamalady · 17/01/2018 15:22

This is my dining table. I love it, and looks like it meets your criteria too?

BarbaraofSevillle · 17/01/2018 15:24

If you're prepared to spend that amount of money, could you get one made to your specification?

Maybe show a carpenter the JL one and say 'can you make me one like this out of real wood'?

SymphonyofShadows · 17/01/2018 15:24

Ercol Plank? An old one though, that hasn't been painted, hair pinned or similarily murdered.

agapanthus1979 · 17/01/2018 15:24

Battersea Extending Dining Table from furniture village. Much nicer in 'real life' than on the website. Extends to sit 3 each side. Really like mine.

Am not sure the legs will work for you but..

This is a little bit over budget

<a class="break-all" href="https://clippings.com/products/bok-dining-table-1193791?variation=64221891clippings.com/products/slice-dining-table-vol-2-1160781?variation=44339851" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">clippings.com/products/bok-dining-table-1193791?variation=64221891clippings.com/products/slice-dining-table-vol-2-1160781?variation=44339851

there are some nice ones on Heals but mainly over budget (but have decent % off in sale if you were able to stretch?)

ConjugalHoliday · 17/01/2018 15:28

Ligne Roset do a lovely one called Eaton. Very minimal and in solid wood.

whiskyowl · 17/01/2018 15:32

Clippings! I have never heard of them, but those are LOVELY! Thank you!

That is quite close to what I'm looking for evilgiraffe! And a much cheaper price.

Love the Ercol plank, but I don't think it extends? I hear you on the horrible renovations of them - some people have sanded them far too far and it looks like the wood is bruised.

I love, love, love this one by Matthew Hilton, but it's £500 over budget.

mrtrebus - I just fear that a carpenter would make something really heavy and rustic, you know? Maybe that's wrong! For example, I really LOVE the Fritz Hansen 'Essay' table, which is ridiculous £££££, and I wondered about getting one made up, but there are a huge number of similar tables that have the legs in the wrong place, or just inelegantly shoved together rather than contoured, and they look awful. My local bar has some.

try made.com or barker and stonehouse

whiskyowl · 17/01/2018 15:33

(Really like the Hay-designed one. I see that practice everywhere, always great work).

agapanthus1979 · 17/01/2018 16:12

The Battersea looks similar to the one you posted, Ok. Much cheaper!

whiskyowl · 17/01/2018 16:27

It does look similar agapanthus - I will see if I can have a look in store! Have to admit I haven't looked at FV before.

YANBU. I made my own.

Also, light fittings. Largely shite.

GertrudeBelle · 17/01/2018 16:30

I love the Mrs B table by Benchmark.

Contemporary farmhouse but elegant.

That's easy. Just get a Victorian/Edwardian one. They're not in fashion so they're quite cheap. Checkout antique shops on ebay and places like Lots Road etc.

whiskyowl · 17/01/2018 16:39

Those of you who made their own tables, what did you do?

OP posts:
BeanoNoir · 17/01/2018 16:40

Can you get a good piece of wood made to measure and put legs on yourself? I like the metal tripod legs

HoarseMackerel · 17/01/2018 16:42

Have you tried Made.com?
I avoided them for ages as I just felt that they would be really, really expensive but they're reasonable.
I have moved to a modern flat, so have had to change my style a bit and they have a lot of things I like.
I'm having trouble getting dining chairs! I'm only 5'1" and most chairs, my legs are just swinging free as I can't touch the ground.
I'm never comfortable!

darceybussell · 17/01/2018 16:43

I bought mine from an Italian designer called devina nais- they make them quite bespoke, but it cost nearly £2k. It was more than I wanted to spend but in the end I'd seen so many tables I hated that I just paid it.

mari652 · 17/01/2018 16:44

I am glad you are getting some good suggestions! The same thought had occurred to me when I begun looking around for one to replace our heavy, overly chunky pine one ( a risk to life and limb every time it is extended ) There is a lot of tat out there , even with large price tags,
