To think there are no nice dining tables anywhere in the entire world?

Ok, I know I'm being unreasonable.

But I can't for the life of me find a new dining table. (This is probably because I'm looking in the wrong places).

I like

  • Scandiwegie style design, at the contemporary rather than the traditional end, definitely NOT rustic
  • light wood, with proper planks not butcher block strips (my current table from Ikea is butcher block and it's too fussy)
  • tapered legs and a certain degree of lightness in the design - nothing too heavy, thick etc.
  • must feel like proper wood, not veneery
  • must be quite narrow, and quite long (extending?) to fit well in the space

If you have a fabulous table, please tell me about it. My budget is probably going to be somewhere around £1k.

Have you tried oak furniture land?

OneMoreOne · 17/01/2018 16:48

Making your own:

drew what I wanted
Googled some methods of fixing legs, planks to make a top etc,
went to builders woodyard, chose planks
Cut using jigsaw
Bought legs off internet
Put together
Sanded and waxed top

This may be a bit traditional but it's in budget. The oak top can be scrubbed or waxed.

Is this any good? We got ours from house of Fraser but can’t see they still do it online.

Any rough idea what that Mrs B table costs Gertrude? It's exactly what I've been looking for!

Usedtobeanxious · 17/01/2018 16:58

eBay is awash with lovely dining tables. I got a one year old, Matthew Hilton/Heals table for £400. Virtually new and way out of our budget otherwise. Have a look!

Have you looked at the Ikea Norråker range? There is a very large, long and thin dining table. Meets most of your criteria -but not the feel of real wood. I have it and it makes my dining room feel so much bigger compared to our previous overly chunky solid oak one.

whiskyowl · 17/01/2018 17:15

You guys are the best. So many nice suggestions on this thread!

"Can you get a good piece of wood made to measure"

Oo-er missus!

This is the bit I'm struggling with. When I was a student, I bought some legs from Ikea and a top from Ikea and just screwed them together, and hey presto, a table! IIt was cheap, and it looked it, but it was sturdy.

But now, if I were to make my own I'd like to get a piece of wood with real character, ideally one continuous plank around 80cm across. I have no idea where you buy such things. It's not the kind of stuff even people like Arnold Laver sell. I came across a website called TimberDeal, who do some lovely stuff, but it's really expensive.

Definitely have a look on eBay OP, you may have to wait awhile for the right thing to come along but it will most definitely be cheaper than a brand new table.

@HoarseMackerel I just saw your post and thought of Ercol 'blue dot' chairs, they are slightly smaller than a full adult size 'green dot' chair, and considerably cheaper. Lovely well made solid wood too and would look great in a modern flat.

Ohyesiam · 17/01/2018 17:20

Ercol?

Cavelady67 · 17/01/2018 17:21

Some lovely suggestions there, I'm on the lookout too.

I hate my kitchen table, and what makes it even more annoying is that every bloody person who comes round comments spontaneously on how lovely it is. Which makes me wonder if I'm missing something, and not replace it just in case I am, and then the cycle repeats.

inappropriateraspberry · 17/01/2018 17:22

We got an Ercol like this on eBay. It was stained really dark and my Dad stripped it back for us. Doesn't extend, but sides fold down and you can fit a few around it, being round.

JaceLancs · 17/01/2018 17:29

Doesn’t help you but my table is vintage G plan I love it dearly
DP have vintage Ercol - furniture auctions are your friend
Other than beds all my furniture is secondhand - amazing quality for about 20% of the price

Habitat?

Reclamation yards can be a good place to pick up big planks etc. We managed to get an enormous piece of oak - had been a kitchen island but was chucked. Bit of elbow grease and it was spruced up and looking perfect.

Mouse510 · 17/01/2018 18:07

If you want to buy timber to make your own find out where your local sawmill is and speak to them. Make sure you get kiln dried timber.
Alternatively commission a furniture maker to make you a table (although £1k isn’t a very big budget for that).
You could try looking on Etsy and find a local maker that way.
A good joiner could whip you up a reasonable table but it might not be able to achieve the look you really want.

averythinline · 17/01/2018 18:21

These people really know their wood....

Have a look at Calligaris too. Italian, not Scandi, but very stylish.

seething1234 · 17/01/2018 19:11

We have a porada Italian table. Beautiful furniture. www.porada.it/en-us/products/tables/zodiac
Ours was about 1k (not this table)

Here are some other sites to try.

West Elm
Rockett st George
Wayfair

DarthArts · 17/01/2018 19:43

I agree with. Was in this position 10 years ago.

Finally decided to have one made to my specifications by a local master carpenter.

It's beautiful and I still love it.

HoarseMackerel · 18/01/2018 21:59

Thanks silky

They look great!
I went for a coffee with my son today in John Lewis and I tried loads of chairs whilst looking around. All too high!
My son thought it was hilarious as he is 6' tall Sad
