To think there are no nice dining tables anywhere in the entire world?

Ok, I know I'm being unreasonable.

But I can't for the life of me find a new dining table. (This is probably because I'm looking in the wrong places).

I like

  • Scandiwegie style design, at the contemporary rather than the traditional end, definitely NOT rustic
  • light wood, with proper planks not butcher block strips (my current table from Ikea is butcher block and it's too fussy)
  • tapered legs and a certain degree of lightness in the design - nothing too heavy, thick etc.
  • must feel like proper wood, not veneery
  • must be quite narrow, and quite long (extending?) to fit well in the space

If you have a fabulous table, please tell me about it. My budget is probably going to be somewhere around £1k.

I have a tom Schneider swirl (light wood) with the chocolate brown suede chairs, but DP hates it and is insisting we sell it, it could be a thread of its own if it weren't so dull!!

His main objection is glass and sticky little toddler fingers, I think. Would you consider wood and glass, or do you dislike it/hate cleaning it?

I like the metal tripod legs. You can get them on eBay and amazon

This shop on Etsy has a few nice things. I wonder if he could make you a table to your spec.

Don’t buy from Made.com

I started explaining why but it took me too long to write down all the ways it was one of the worst internet shopping experiences I have had.

If you do buy from them make sure you check the delivery policies (and times), returns policies and general t&cs first. The service level was much much lower than I would have expected for the price. Furniture nice but not worth the hassle.

PineappleScrunchie · 20/01/2018 13:34

Great. They’ve automatically made a website I was complaining about into a hyperlink Hmm Hmm

safariboot · 20/01/2018 13:35

I like mine but it's probably the exact opposite of your style. I do find that nowadays it's hard or expensive to get solid wood furniture. Even plywood would be OK, but no, it's all cheap veneered chipboard. (Second-hand is an option but I can't imagine you'd find many 'contemporary' styles that way.)

There's a great furniture store in North London / Herts / Essex borders called Fishpools (www.fishpools.co.uk). Their website lists most of their furniture. If you aren't local to them, you can probably source the same furniture from a local firm to you (ie one of their suppliers). Their furniture is top notch quality and although pricey you do get what you pay for.

Have you tried laura Ashley

latebreakfast · 04/12/2018 11:41

You want . Well maybe you don't, but I do Grin

PiperPublickOccurrences · 04/12/2018 11:44

Get one made. Seriously. We are having a custom-built table made at the moment to our exact specfications for around your budget price. We visited the furniture maker in his workshop and even got to choose the tree he's making it from.

Plus you're supporting local businesses, getting something unique and not settling for second best.

settmenu · 04/12/2018 11:50

Op surely you've found one by now?! 😂

Hideandgo · 04/12/2018 11:56

Mine is exactly as you describe. Did u see it in John Lewis? Actually just checked and they don’t have it anymore but below is closest to it.

We searched for one for ages - eventually got one we liked from John Lewis.

Unfortunately within six months it had awful scratched and the colour surface was lifting in one part. They came out to look but decided it was "normal wear and tear" and nothing they could do. So it depresses me whenever I see it, and has to remain permanently covered by a tablecloth (as it was before for protection). We had also bought matching chairs and sideboard, which makes it even more upsetting.

I was much happier with my now very worn £150 one from Habitat.

I made ours. Solid wood kitchen worktop from a company online. I needed a slightly narrower table, so 75cm width (iirc) worktop was perfect. Their website has a design tool so you can specify length as well as what radius you want on the corners and edges. Loads of choice of woods and plank width. The legs are 12mm steel hair pin legs from Ebay. Can't remember exactly how much it cost, but probably under £200.
