to be annoyed with dh's kitchen hygiene?

He will chop chicken on a chopping board, give it a cursory wipe with the kitchen sponge then use it to make sandwiches on.

Yesterday he cooked chicken for tea and he put the chicken packet in the sink with loads of other washing - he was going to wah it and then recycle it. I told him he'd just put loads of chicken germs all over the sink and wtf was he thinking?? He says he does that all the time. Hmm

Is it just me, or is that completely incompetent?? And dangerous?? It makes me feel I can't trust him to do anything in the kitchen.

I never wash the packaging before recycling.

What, dutysuite?? But then you'll contaminate the whole recycling load!!!

The recycling load that goes in the recycling bin outside never to be touched by me again? I also have my refuse and recycling bin cleaned every week. Tins and jars get rinsed of course and go in a separate bin. If it is not advisable to wash raw chicken I am not then going to start rinsing the containers the chicken has been in! Confused We have four bins for refuse and recycling in the area I live in so not very worried about contamination from the bin.

allthgoodusernamesaretaken · 16/01/2018 10:04

Food trays and wooden chopping boards can go in the dishwasher.

mumeeee · 16/01/2018 10:06

Washing the chicken packet in the sink is fine. I've always done this but usually wash it seperatly. Chopping chicken and then making a sandwhich on the same board isn't right though unless the board has been washed properly in between.
I use scissors to cut up chicken so it doesn't touch a chopping board

Randomlywondering · 16/01/2018 10:11

I wipe the chicken trays with a spray of cleaner and kitchen towel and recycle them then . I have to recycle all I can as my twins nappies keep my bin 2/3s full every fortnight so I've no room for other things. This is probably no better for the environment but I otherwise have no way of getting rid of waste

Willow2017 · 16/01/2018 10:12

I dont over use anti- bac only when prepping raw meat.

But i dont put chicken wrappings in recycling as often they are sitting in blood/juices and i just feel it wouldn't be clean enough.

Other recycling gets washed if needed like milk bottles etc rest just goes in.
Horses for courses but one of my kids got food poisoning once after eating chicken elsewhere, never again.

RibenaMonsoon · 16/01/2018 10:13

I have a separate chopping board for raw meat. I don't have an issue with putting the raw meat juices down the sink but then I'll always immediately chuck a boiled kettles worth of water in the sink with a cap of zoflora.

saladdays66 · 16/01/2018 10:14

Greyhound - sn't it all power washed at the recycling plant?*

How can you power wash paper and cardboard etc? Our recycling bin has everything in - plastic, aerosols, clothes, paper, cardboard, cartons, tins - and a lot of that cannot be washed. All our recycling has to be dry before you put it in the bin.

Um, Dutysuite, you miss my point. I'm not concerned about YOU being contaminated by your recycling!!

If you put unwashed meat cartons in your recycling bin along with other items for recycling - paper, cardboard, tins, cans, etc. - the chicken will contanimate the whole load and it will have to be disposed of. It may even contaminate other people's recycling. Councils spend hundreds of thousands of pounds every year dealing with contaminated loads of recycling.

If you don't want to rinse chicken containers, then put then in your normal bin.

bobstersmum · 16/01/2018 10:18

The thing about washing the chicken packet, I recycle everything but anything that's contained raw meat goes straight in general bin.

RoseWhiteTips · 16/01/2018 10:20

I also don’t wash recycling stuff up. I shove it straight in the recycling bin

That is gross, frankly.

ArcheryAnnie · 16/01/2018 10:22

Chienrouge my council specifies (on the bags, and in the leaflets and on the website) that recycling items have to be clean. I bet yours does, too.

80sMum · 16/01/2018 10:24

I am very surprised to read that some people don't wash items that are put into the recycling bin! Our local council specifically states that all recycling put into the recycling bin should be both clean and dry.

It is my understanding that if anything contaminated is in the recycling bin - and that would include unwashed tins, unrinsed bottles, unwashed plastic meat containers - then the entire consignment (i.e. the whole lorry-load) is deemed unfit for recycling and is sent instead to landfill.

ArcheryAnnie · 16/01/2018 10:27

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar

Most recycling is now mixed recycling. If there's a dirty chicken tray leaking chicken juice all over paper, cardboard, etc, they are just going to landfill the whole lot.

And there's much more human input into recycling than you'd think - actual real people help sort the recycling as it goes along the conveyor belts, as well as big machines, air blowers, magnets, etc. Even if you don't care about contaminating a load, it's a good idea to think of the people who will be handling your festering chicken tray a good few days after you dumped it into recycling and it's had some time to fester.

dutysuite · 16/01/2018 10:28

saladdays66 no need to be so aggressive in your post.

I can't see anywhere on the chicken packaging where it states I should wash it. I have also checked my councils website regarding recycling, it doesn't mention washing plastic packaging. It does ask that all jars and tins are washed. Our paper and card has a separate bin so plastic and card etc does not sit in the same bin.

ittakes2 · 16/01/2018 10:32

YANBU

derxa · 16/01/2018 10:35

Dear God!

saladdays66 · 16/01/2018 10:35

Dutysuite - I don't think I was aggressive at all!

I can't believe people put things in recycling without washing them. What else goes in the same bin as your chicken containers?

OP posts:
saladdays66 · 16/01/2018 10:37

And if your council asks that jars and tins are washed, don't you think they'd want meat containers (if they recycle them) to be washed too?

Otherwise the poor recycling staff may have to deal with meat/chicken germs that have been sitting out unwashed - and stinking, and attracting flies - for 2 weeks (our bins are only collected every fortnight).

Beggars belief.

All recycling should be rinsed, as far as I’m aware it doesn’t have to be sparking clean.

I’m missing something here..... honest question. Those who bin the plastic because they don’t want to contaminate their sinks, aren’t their sinks contaminated by the scissors, knifes, boards, hands?

saladdays66 · 16/01/2018 10:44

Not so much the sink would be by splashing all the juices/blood from the container over it. I think that's the problem.

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 16/01/2018 10:47

Aww cheapsausages you two sound like a match made in heaven❤
The reason why they say don't wash chicken is because you'll splash it all over the sink etc. I'm perfectly capable of safely washing a chicken tray in hot soapy water. I wash mine then keep it to drain fat into before making gravy. Then it goes in the bin. I can't believe I'm the only one washing my tray. I'm not even recycling it!!
There again my dishwashing is meticulous and I have absolute faith in my kitchen hygiene. Always washing hands. With soap. Other people's practices can make me feel faint. For my mum a quick rub on a damp (cold and crumb) dish cloth will do!! Shock I never chop meat on a board. Plate only. Usually with scissors.

ArcheryAnnie · 16/01/2018 10:50

I can't see anywhere on the chicken packaging where it states I should wash it.

Why would it say that, dutysuite, when common sense dictates that if you put a very dirty thing in with a bunch of clean things, you will make all the clean things dirty too? It's not rocket science.

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 16/01/2018 10:50

I always wash recycling.
I change my washing up water about 3 times while washing up. I make my mum feel faint by my methods!!
I have a washing up bowl.

dutysuite · 16/01/2018 10:56

If the packaging of chicken states not to wash the chicken because splashes contaminate the surrounding areas then surely this happens when washing the packaging. Confused

saladdays66 · 16/01/2018 10:57

If the packaging of chicken states not to wash the chicken because splashes contaminate the surrounding areas then surely this happens when washing the packaging.

So if you think that, then just bin your chicken packaging. Don't recycle it.
