The only time I find myself reaching for the iron these days is if someone is going to a wedding and a shirt, or outfit needs ironing. Or if one of us is going for an interview.
Otherwise, I'm careful how I wash and hang things. No creases. Job done.
I don't have an 'ironing basket' and never have a pile of ironing to get through every week.

Am I slovenly? or what?
My mother is a slave to the iron and spend hours and hours every week wading through a pile of ironing. Whereas I don't see the point. Life's too short. I've worked it out my mother spends, on average, 12 hours a week Ironing!

Do you iron?
Or not?

(Obviously if your job entails having an ironed shirt Monday to Friday, exceptions are made)

@icenasliceplease I know. Exactly. Have tried telling the boss this. Falls on deaf ears every single time. Confused

Llyra · 14/01/2018 20:52

I’ve stopped ironing laundry for the most part. My husband irons his shirts once a week and sometimes I give him a hand.

However I use the iron all the time now that I’ve picked up sewing. It’s just a quick press of a seam here or there, nothing like having a basket of laundry to iron.

LightastheBreeze · 14/01/2018 20:53

I don’t iron but I do hang things up or fold them, if stuff just gets shoved into a washing basket in a big pile then it will need ironing.

maddiemookins16mum · 14/01/2018 20:53

I don't iron (53). However, DH (55) does. Everything, even pillow cases, it's great. I haven't ironed since circa 1998.
Both my nieces (late 20's) don't own an iron.

MuncheysMummy · 14/01/2018 20:54

I iron everything but only as I need it each morning for myself and 19 month old DS as my DH sorts his own suits out for work. Most of my friends don't iron and to be honest you can tell! Takes 5 minutes each morning and makes a world of difference.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 14/01/2018 20:54

I don't iron. I bought "non-iron" school shirts for the offspring, if you hang them up quickly after washing they're fine.

I don't buy clothes that look like they will crease.

I do have an iron just in case anyone has a job interview or if I need to fuse hama beads.

Fintress · 14/01/2018 20:55

I love ironing. I stick on Amazon or Netflix and watch trashy stuff while I do it.

maddiemookins16mum · 14/01/2018 20:55

I did though nanny once for a family who insisted I ironed the children's underwear (I never, just put it away, they never dressed them anyway).

Mary1935 · 14/01/2018 20:55

When I was about 10 I used to have to iron piles off clothes (big family) even knickers got a run over. I don't iron now - unless it's a special occasion - my sons uniform was ironed when he first started school - however the novelty has worn off now he's in the juniors - the creases fall out!!!

WhiskeySourpuss · 14/01/2018 20:55

If I ironed everything item of clothing & bedding in my house it wouldn't take me 12 hours!!!

I iron even DD's M&S non iron School shirts because I'd feel like I looked scruffy if I went out in un-ironed clothes... I don't care how non-iron your clothes claim to be, how well you hang them or how quickly you fold them once they come out of the dryer there will be a noticeable difference between the appearance of someone who is wearing ironed clothes & someone who isn't - case in point you can always tell which kids haven't had their school uniform ironed as they look untidy when standing next to a child in ironed uniform

Judydreamsofhorses · 14/01/2018 20:58

I don’t mind ironing, but definitely don’t do things like bedding, tea towels etc.

Misswiggy · 14/01/2018 20:59

I often send stuff to The charity shop having only been worn once if after I wash it and put it in the dryer it becomes clear it's something that's going to need ironing!

My dh insists on having ironed shirts for work so we send them out to an ironing company. It's pretty much the only chore I won't do.

LaurieMarlow · 14/01/2018 20:59

I don't think non ironers are necessarily trying to look like they've ironed. For most it's just that they don't want to spend time doing it.

I, for one, couldn't give a fuck if people can tell.

silkpyjamasallday · 14/01/2018 20:59

We bought an iron and ironing board just over a year ago when we moved house, I've not unpackaged either yet!

headinthecloud · 14/01/2018 20:59

I spend hours and hours ironing. I hate it. How do you wash and hang things so they don't need ironing? Mine just looks so creased

spanieleyes · 14/01/2018 21:00

I don't iron at all-in fact I don't think I have an iron or ironing board! Everything is washed, tumble dried and hung up.

I don’t think it’s a generation thing as I am 60 and don’t iron

stickytoffeevodka · 14/01/2018 21:01

Nope, I don't iron. I've never ironed a thing and I'm 28. Even my school shirts were anti-crease ones and nowadays I don't own an iron.

I have better things to do with my time than stand and get creases out of my clothes when you can pretty much never notice once they're on. I certainly don't look at people and think "wow, your shirt looks creased today!"

dayswithaY · 14/01/2018 21:02

MIL irons everything - have you ever tried to put your foot into a sock that's been pressed flat?

icenasliceplease · 14/01/2018 21:02

I dsagree.
I used to put the uniforms on a soft spin. Take them out carefully, pull them into shape, dry them on the clothes horse.
My children never looked crumpled or scruffy going to school. Confused

Misswiggy, I too have put stuff in the charity bag if it looks like it is going to look like a old creased thing that will forever need ironing

icenasliceplease · 14/01/2018 21:04

Obviously a proper shirt would need ironing.
However, a lot of school shirts (especially primary aged) are of the polo shirt variety, so as long as you wash them carefully and hang carefully, they shouldn't need ironing.

I bought a hand-held garment steamer a couple of years ago and haven’t looked back. Those 3-4 times a year I would have ironed something (silk shirt, fancy frock for dd) I now steam in 2 minutes exactly. 1 min to heat the water, 1 min to pass it over the thing. Creases fall out. No need to find and faff iron, board, spray, hanger, etc.

Otherwise I havent ironed anything for a decade. I hang carefully and fold straight off the line.

I admit to missing how neat and streamlined ironed bedlinen looks (seems to take up much less space in the press, too) so I very occasionally send it out for ironing but it will a cold day in hell before I spend my precious leisure time doing it myself.

SpareASquare · 14/01/2018 21:05

I don't iron. I buy clothes with that in mind. Anything that needs ironing gets a spritz of water and into the dryer for a few minutes.
I did buy an iron when the dryer died but once I had a new one, iron went away and hasn't been seen since.
