Is iorning a thing of the past?

The only time I find myself reaching for the iron these days is if someone is going to a wedding and a shirt, or outfit needs ironing. Or if one of us is going for an interview.
Otherwise, I'm careful how I wash and hang things. No creases. Job done.
I don't have an 'ironing basket' and never have a pile of ironing to get through every week.

Am I slovenly? or what?
My mother is a slave to the iron and spend hours and hours every week wading through a pile of ironing. Whereas I don't see the point. Life's too short. I've worked it out my mother spends, on average, 12 hours a week Ironing!

Do you iron?
Or not?

(Obviously if your job entails having an ironed shirt Monday to Friday, exceptions are made)

Farmer and what do you think of the children and parents in "shabby" clothes? Do you judge them as people?

I also keep an iron mostly for hama beads.

Ironically iron more in the summer as me and my daughters have cotton or linen dresses which seem to crease more. But I just iron an odd item if it looks dreadful when I take it out of the cupboard. Never do a whole pile and vast majority of the time don't iron at all. Even Dh work shirts get shaken well and hung up on a hanger to dry. They are fine. School uniform? No chance.

Incredulous at people who iron bedding... it gets crumpled the first time you sleep on it. Do you take it off and iron it again every morning????

bonbonours · 16/01/2018 22:33

Also, I must be doing it wrong or something. The only time I ironed a pile of things and folded them up to put away, they then cooled with lines where they had been folded and looked worse than not ironed at all. So do you have to hang things up after ironing them to let them cool?? If so, I am reassured that I definitely don't have time for it.

Single item, ironed and worn immediately is my limit.

Incredulous at the people who don't iron cotton bedding Wink (can understand the poly mixes don't get so crumpled). No amount of hanging/folding straight out of the tumble drier is going to keep creases from indelibly forming in cotton. I like to have my bedding looking and feeling freshly laundered.
Same with shirts - anything with a decent amount of cotton in needs ironing. My dcs regularly get commented on how smart they look Smile
And yes, I iron their boxers/trunks too otherwise they'd also be crumpled.

ferrier I’m the same as you, can’t really understand how people don’t iron bedding. I’ve tried to not iron, I take it out of the tumble drier the moment it’s finished, fold flat etc and it still looks creased to buggery. The bed looks so scruffy with unironed bedding.. Blush. I do however find that cheaper bedding sets (sainsburys etc) don’t need ironing so much. So, there’s a couple of sets I don’t bother too much with (I still iron the pillow cases though) but nicer stuff especially a white cotton Laura Ashley (special guest stuff) looks like a crumpled old rag unless I iron it. Maybe that’s where I’m going wrong! However, I do tend to iron most things. I’m convinved we’ve got weird water here, because I’ve never managed to get away without ironing and look presentable. Work blouses, wool cardigans, jeans etc all get ironed. Although I did buy one of those steam pod jobs which makes it a breeze in comparison to old style irons.

Life is too short to iron.🤓

I NEED to add this - msgd someone on a dating app to say he had a cracking Christmas jumper...this was his response...he got quickly blocked!

Is iorning a thing of the past?
MyOtherProfile · 16/01/2018 22:59

Wow Buddha that is just so wrong!

buddhasbelly · 16/01/2018 23:33

@MyOtherProfile I've not let it defeat me, have a date saturday with a guy that seems nice!

I really wanted to ask him who in their right mind irons Christmas jumpers but didn't want to waste my time engaging with such a twat

Nakedavenger74 · 17/01/2018 05:34

I've ironed in my 43 years precisely thrice. Each time I've totally fucked the garment:

  • black rust came out of holes and ruined a white skirt
-gallons of water came out of the holes and ruined a silk top
  • learned from above and did it dry. Shiny marks on a beautiful black dress plus loss of tiny creases in the hem

Iron In bin and stuff that needs ironing goes to the dry cleaners. Bullshit!
