Is iorning a thing of the past?

The only time I find myself reaching for the iron these days is if someone is going to a wedding and a shirt, or outfit needs ironing. Or if one of us is going for an interview.
Otherwise, I'm careful how I wash and hang things. No creases. Job done.
I don't have an 'ironing basket' and never have a pile of ironing to get through every week.

Am I slovenly? or what?
My mother is a slave to the iron and spend hours and hours every week wading through a pile of ironing. Whereas I don't see the point. Life's too short. I've worked it out my mother spends, on average, 12 hours a week Ironing!

Do you iron?
Or not?

(Obviously if your job entails having an ironed shirt Monday to Friday, exceptions are made)

I don’t iron but I do send mine out to be ironed.

My OH irons his chefs whites.

My late mother in law used to iron everything, underwear etc but she also ironed dusters and dishclothes. No idea why.

ObiJuanKenobi · 14/01/2018 20:25

DP irons shirts that's all

Seniorcitizen1 · 14/01/2018 20:25

Everything bar pants and socks get ironed on every Sunday morning while listening to the Archers omnibus

mimiasovitch · 14/01/2018 20:26

I love ironed bedding, but the ironing lady does it for me. If for some reason they haven't done the weekly pick up my sheets are crumpled! I do have an excellent iron, which is used only when dressmaking. It's essential then.

Friedgreen · 14/01/2018 20:26

I don’t need to iron as I hang sopping wet clothes on hangers to dry. Even dh’s cotton dress shirts are wrinkle free if you hang it properly.

lostinspaceyetagain · 14/01/2018 20:26

Ally my clothes are dry clean except underwear, swimsuit and pjs. I neve iron anything.

Andcake · 14/01/2018 20:26

We've lived in our current house 2 years and haven't ironed since we moved in. I did buy a new ironing board cover though as dm saw mine in the spare room and went on about how tatty it was ☺️

LittleBearPad · 14/01/2018 20:27

DH irons his shirts. I may iron a couple of bits and bobs occasionally. That's if. I don't buy things for me if they look like they need ironing.

Eliza9917 · 14/01/2018 20:27

Last thing of mine (a suit jacket that I wore to a funeral) that got ironed was a year ago last September, and even then someone else did it for me.

Needs another iron so I can wear it this week but I'll ask my mum to do it Blush as she can make things look like they are straight out of the shop (even without ironing them, it's the way she folds them when hanging them to dry).

I buy things that don't need ironing.

PinkBuffalo · 14/01/2018 20:27

I like ironing, but like other posters I don't iron. Simply don't have the time anymore.

icenasliceplease · 14/01/2018 20:28

I just feel that there's such a huge workload when it comes to running a household and bringing up children.
Ironing is an added, often imo, unnecessary extra chore.

Shirts need ironing.
Everything else, if washed correctly and hung carefully, doesn't need ironing.
Why make more work for yourself?

LovingLola · 14/01/2018 20:29

Dh and I both iron. Shirts, jeans, t-shirts. Anything that is creased or crumpled gets ironed.
Both my children also iron rather than wear creased or crumpled clothes.
We also polish shoes!

ivenoideawhatimdoing · 14/01/2018 20:29

I bloody wish it was a thing of the past.

Secretly I quite enjoy it, but I iron everything. I hate wearing creased clothes and I feel bad sending DS out in them.

I do DH's because he's a clean freak and his clothes never really need washing so he has maybe 7-10 things a week on top of his work uniform which I just swoosh over.

StewPots · 14/01/2018 20:30

@icenasliceplease yes, we all secretly think this at work, it seems so pointless.

That's time we could be spending doing something more worthwhile and meaningful like chatting with residents and taking part in activities. There's only 3 on the floor so when ones tied up with ironing, the other two are sorting laundry or seeing to call bells etc. We have a 30 min window for activities, it's so stupid.

But no. We can't do that properly because we must iron a bedsheet that will be rewashed again overnight or first thing in the morning.

Sigh. But I'm derailing with my ridiculous work timetable. I hate ironing Grin

Tiredmum100 · 14/01/2018 20:31

I only iron if it's for an occasion wedding/ interview. I recently (about 3 months ago) ironed a shirt type top for a hospital appointment. My 4 year old asked me what the things were I was using, umm "iron and ironing board" he'd never seen them before in his life! I actually don't know when I'd fit in time to iron. My friend is always moaning about the ironing she has to do. Will text she's only just sat down at 9 pm because she's just finished the ironing. I want to give her a good shake!!

Notreallyarsed · 14/01/2018 20:31

I do the ironing on a Sunday. 2 hours (braw steam generator I got in the sales before Christmas) and I’m done, bedding, clothes, dish towels (hygiene rather than looks, my mum always did it) plus it’s 2 hours of watching shite on tv and getting peace. Bonus!

Goldfishshoals · 14/01/2018 20:31

I choose clothes that don't need ironing. DH irons a shirt for job interviews and weddings. That's it.

It's an utterly pointless waste of energy, human effort etc, and the sooner it dies out completely the better off we'll be.

SauvignonBlanche · 14/01/2018 20:31

I don't iron anything, I really CBA.

MsHarry · 14/01/2018 20:32

I never understand how people don't iron. What about smart shirts? I don't iron duvet covers , boxer shorts or tea towels like my DM did but most other things, yes.

TeenTimesTwo · 14/01/2018 20:32

Senior I also iron on Sundays whilst listening to The Archers.

There is a lot less since DD1 took over her ironing, and somehow she does it in about 1/10th of the time Hmm. I wonder if that is why things still look creased?

MsHarry · 14/01/2018 20:33

I guess it depends on your job. DH wears a shirt and DD is in school uniform.

PricillaQueenOfTheDesert · 14/01/2018 20:33

I love ironing, it is my absolute favourite chore. I know it’s weird but it’s just such a satisfying job, you start with a muddle and finish with crisp, folded clothes and bedding. It smells lovely too.
DH works in an office so it’s five shirts a week minimum. When my dd’s were tiny ironing their baby clothes was just the best job I had ever encountered.
I will always iron, my daughters don’t, maybe it’s a young generation thing.

LittleBearPad · 14/01/2018 20:34

My friend is always moaning about the ironing she has to do. Will text she's only just sat down at 9 pm because she's just finished the ironing. I want to give her a good shake!!

Yes I know someone like that. Just stop ironing if it's such a nightmare!!

Hassled · 14/01/2018 20:34

I wish I could be a non-ironer, but I just can't seem to become one. I've never dried or folded well enough that it's not necessary - there are always creases and even if no one else will notice them, I know they're there.

AKingdomForACarrotstick · 14/01/2018 20:35

I'm in the (scruffy) "no ironing" camp, too!

The last time I ironed was May 2016, ha! We were invited to a very formal thing, so DH's and DSs' shirts needed ironing. I went and borrowed a neighbour's iron Halo
