Cancelling an item on eBay.

Prepared to get flamed for this! But would you consider cancelling an item you sold on eBay if an identical item sold one hour after it for double the price your one sold for?! And we are not talking a few pounds either!... Wibu?? (It's not been paid for yet if that makes a difference)

Ours seems to be the only two on eBay. It would be my luck to list something the someone lists an identical one an hour later! That's probably why I got less bids as although mine sold for the usual price it's the lowest end of the usual price (normally go between £40-50)

If you do that and risk getting your feedback trashed and being reported which will go on your record you also need to take into account that your re-list of the item might end up being hidden in the search because of it.

In fact it may have been the way you listed it that made it reach the lower price in the first place. Or it may be something you have done previously that affected the visibility.

Ebay is not as black and white as you might think. There are all manner of little quirks that affect how an item shows in search and whether it sells or not.

I list things at the price I want to sell them for, using BIN and sometimes a bit higher with best offer, that way I accept that I have achieved what I intended.

You will risk not just this sale but any future ones if you cancel. Feedback for that kind of thing will put sellers off or you will attract the ones you don't want.

ThisLittleKitty · 13/01/2018 20:10

This is my first time selling on eBay I'm normally a buyer so my feedback is 100% positive so not something to do with anything I've done. The only thing I'm guessing is my postage was slightly higher then there's (only by 1.20 but again mine was the suggested price by eBay)

What day and time did your item end? A lot of people are out on, say, Saturday am.

ThisLittleKitty · 13/01/2018 20:34

It was afternoon today and theirs was only an hour behind mine

Is complain to eBay if you did this. It would also be obvious if you relished an item so eBay could see what you're up to!

Just no. You've sold it....

TheDailyMailIsADisgustingRag · 13/01/2018 20:39

Maybe yours went for what it’s acyu worth and some (poor fool) has massively overpaid for the other? I wouldn’t assume anything. Imagine it will come back to bite you in the bum if you get greedy.

Leigha3 · 13/01/2018 20:39

Once you receice negative feedback for that and rightly so, you're unlikely to get twice as much for it since it will be clear to potential buyers that your greed is more important to you then honouring your customers purchases.

I've been a member of eBay for 17 years and never had a seller do that to me, I'd be furious if one did. eBay is always a gamble unless you make BIN their only option, though that still doesn't mean a live auction might not occasionally go for much more usually due to a bidding war.

TheDailyMailIsADisgustingRag · 13/01/2018 20:39

Actually*

Yabu

Can't abide messers on eBay

Schlimbesserung · 13/01/2018 20:48

If you have no previous feedback for selling then you will probably attract lower bids than a more experienced seller with a proven track record. You got a fair price, just not the runaway bids that the other seller did. Tough.

Trashboat · 13/01/2018 20:52

Would be a bit of a twatty thing to do imho.

As the Russians say, Toughskee shitskee.

minisoksmakehardwork · 13/01/2018 20:57

If the item auction has ended, and you've got what they normally sell for I'd leave it at that. You stand not getting anything the next time and therefore being worse off.

Are you sure both items are identical? I've sold items before where they seem to be the same but one is a better spec.

Soubriquet · 13/01/2018 21:00

No.. it's the way of the game

Extremely frustrating I know...been there but have to suck it up

SpottyGecko · 13/01/2018 21:00

Given the choice of two items I normally bid on the one with more description and photos. I tend to be put off by the listings with one photo and one sentence description. Could that be the reason?

And no, I wouldn't cancel.

IrkThePurist · 13/01/2018 21:04

How do you feel about getting ripped off on Ebay? You really need to do more research before you list your item.

ThisLittleKitty · 13/01/2018 21:04

It's definitely the same item. Yes I did only have one pic. Would someone really pay double the price for an item because it had more than one pic?? Like £40 more? Still debating whether to cancel.

OP posts:
CaptainHammer · 13/01/2018 21:05

Yabu. Also you may re list it and have it sell for an even lower amount next time.

londonrach · 13/01/2018 21:07

Op...you do realise you risk no one bidding on it next time..

mummabubs · 13/01/2018 21:09

I buy and sell on eBay and would never do this. Please don't get me wrong, I completely understand it's frustrating but I'd view it as you've got £40 now that you didn't have a few hours ago and leave it at that. You've said that yours went for the average price anyway so you'd surely be very unlikely to get double if you relist? It'd be very unfair to back out now and frankly you'll get reported and slated in feedback and I wouldn't blame them at all.

SpottyGecko · 13/01/2018 21:13

Having only one picture of things often put me off. I like to see various angles etc.

Also, the losers of your auction may then have got into a bidding frenzy on the next one - especially as it was ending only one hour later.

JeReviens · 13/01/2018 21:17

Of course you shouldn’t do this. Crappest idea ever. And you don’t know if the other guy was bidding his thing up and ended up buying it himself. It happens.

traumwerk · 13/01/2018 21:17

This has happened to me as a buyer before. The seller wasn't exactly straight with me though, she pretended that she had posted the item and then immediately refunded when I didn't receive it, when in actual fact she had relisted the item starting at almost double of what I had won the auction at. I was not happy!

ThisLittleKitty · 13/01/2018 21:20

Well atleast I will cancel it before the person has paid therefore not lost anything.

Thats why I now wait to leave feedback, its happened to me twice recently.
