Postman trying to open front door?

Bumblebee2302 · 13/01/2018 10:33

Postman just tried my (locked) front door handle when an item wouldn't fit in the letterbox. He hadn't even knocked. I could see this happening from the inside and opened the door - I asked him if he was trying to open my door and he said he was only going to leave the item in the inside of the door. I said that I didn't think he should be attempting to open people's doors and he got a bit shirty.

Is this a thing?! I don't know him and he is not a regular postie - in fact, the postmen in this area change frequently. Just made me feel uncomfortable - does your postman/woman do this?

OP posts:

I keep my doors locked around the clock.

Willow2017 · 14/01/2018 10:42

Just because its not what you do doesnt mean nobody else can chose to do it.
If i am in the house and i chose to keep my door unlocked thats my business. 9 times out of 10 i am there when postie comes but he might still open rhe door and shout 'morning' and put a parcel inside the door. Its not a crime.

If its a postie who is covering his route they will knock and if i am not in will leave a note and i will go pick up the parcel. Its not the end of the world. You seem fixated on me being too lazy to get parcels when actually its just my postie being kind and he knows where to leave them for me and put a note through the door. Same with neighbours we take in parcels if they are too big to hide for each other its no big deal.

Not everyone lives thier lives behind locked doors. My door is open all day in summer if its hot, sue me now😀

Purplerain101 · 14/01/2018 10:44

I sometimes like to be naked in my house on a warm day haha. The thought of the postie popping his head round the door with a parcel and getting an eyeful is making me chuckle. My house is very open plan so my bathroom is next to the front door and then I have a big living room dining kitchen area as soon as you walk in the door

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 14/01/2018 10:47

Willow2017 Well your first post started off by saying it saved you a trip to the post office, so yes, that’s exactly where I’m getting the lazy vibe from.

I shall not be suing anyone, but I wouldn’t put it past you to try and sue anyone over anything that happened due to you leaving your door unlocked.

brizzledrizzle · 14/01/2018 10:49

How could you prove to an insurance company that you were broken into if you left your door unlocked?! We could all pull fast ones with our insurance companies and make claims by saying “oh someone walked into my unlocked house and took all my TVs, laptops and phones”.

The absence of a broken window, forced lock etc would be quite a clue.

There was a case of insurance fraud that I heard about where the person charged had claimed that a lot of expensive gadgets were stolen and called the police to support his insurance claim. He didn't have the intelligence to move the brick or the glass that had been thrown through the window; that was how the insurance company and police caught him out.

accendo · 14/01/2018 10:49

What if you are sitting naked on the couch?

Sparklingbrook · 14/01/2018 10:52

If you are in the habit of sitting naked on the couch shut your curtains and lock the door presumably.

Purplerain101 · 14/01/2018 10:55

@sparkling If you want to have your door locked or unlocked when naked (or anytime) then it should still be common curtesy for someone to knock first before entering

CaptainMarvelDanvers · 14/01/2018 10:58

OP trust your instincts and do what feels right for you. I’m not saying Postie is a bad guy but you don’t know that.

The Postie should not open the door unless there is a prior arrangements.

A lot of women go against their gut instincts in order to not to appear rude and sometimes this can make them vulnerable to terrible people.

Sparklingbrook · 14/01/2018 10:58

That's me told then. Grin

Willow2017 · 14/01/2018 11:08

Dont be ridiculous i wont be suing anyone. Who would i sue?

Clutching at straws to get personal now.

kaytee87 · 14/01/2018 11:11

He should have knocked the door but he probably has other people that are ok with it so just didn't think.
Our postie tries the front door to leave stuff in the porch or leaves it round the back but he knows I'm ok with that and as I'm on crutches just now I'm grateful to not to have to go to the door.

FireCracker2 · 14/01/2018 11:22

Our postman leaves stuff inside the door.I am happy with that win-win situation.

GetShitDone · 14/01/2018 11:23

@BattleCuntGalactica it wouldn't be trespassing where I live. No such law here!

Jobjobjob · 14/01/2018 11:23

*Willow2017 I have also lived rurally in a low crime area; people still weren’t stupid enough to leave their doors unlocked. Rural areas aren’t more idyllic you know; that’s a common misconception.

They’re targeted areas because muppets leave their doors unlocked believeing they’re safe, and it takes the police longer to actually get there.

One day your laziness of not wanting to trek to the post office to collect your parcel will not pay off, and I can almost guarantee you’ll be the one with the loudest voice whining woe is me*

What an incredibly rude post, stupid people, muppets, loudest whining people! Did you mean to be that rude?

Willow2017 · 14/01/2018 11:29

Job
Thanks.

Having lived here 45+ years i really dont give one re what what thinks😉 Neither myself nor neighbours have ever been burgled and i live 2 miles from nearest police station which is probably closer than many living in a city.

Graphista · 14/01/2018 15:18

I've had 20+ addresses in a variety of locations.

This may out me but a village I used to live in where leaving doors unlocked was common practice was targeted. Thieves took keys hanging in porches/hallways, nobody registered this people thought they'd simply mislaid them, then on one night several days later 7 very expensive cars were stolen, plus other smaller items that were easily accessible. Most victims got minimal if any insurance coverage because they didn't adequately secure their property.

Doors are locked there now!

PopFart · 14/01/2018 15:21

GetShitDone you live outside the law? Grin

GetShitDone · 14/01/2018 17:49

@PopFart, not all laws apply to all places...

PopFart · 14/01/2018 19:13

You're so mysterious
