Postman trying to open front door?

Bumblebee2302 · 13/01/2018 10:33

Postman just tried my (locked) front door handle when an item wouldn't fit in the letterbox. He hadn't even knocked. I could see this happening from the inside and opened the door - I asked him if he was trying to open my door and he said he was only going to leave the item in the inside of the door. I said that I didn't think he should be attempting to open people's doors and he got a bit shirty.

Is this a thing?! I don't know him and he is not a regular postie - in fact, the postmen in this area change frequently. Just made me feel uncomfortable - does your postman/woman do this?

I think they are putting themselves at risk as well, because if something were to go missing out of the house, then they could be a suspect. Not to mention the risk of getting themselves a smack in the teeth from someone who doesn't think just opening someone's front door is absolutely fine like me

LemonadeWithACherry · 13/01/2018 14:42

I wonder where the law would stand if you had a dog and it bit him? My dog would go apeshit if someone just walked in the front door (and so would I).

Lovesagin · 13/01/2018 14:44

The dog would be PTS and the postman could sue the owner, I believe. Madness.

Although, if my dog ever did that, obviously she'd conveniently run off, never to be found again........;)

norfolkenclue · 13/01/2018 14:45

Yep...ours does this...it's fine!!! Jeez!

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 13/01/2018 14:46

This is not acceptable; I would make a formal complaint about him.

Fair enough if he asks about it for future parcels and gives you the option to say yes or no, but to try it without even knocking is a massive breach of privacy.

BigBaboonBum · 13/01/2018 14:46

No way they should do this, that’s super weird

LaLaLand84 · 13/01/2018 14:55

I think it depends, I regularly order things for delivery and have an arrangement with the usual delivery woman as to where to leave things if I'm not in so as not to disturb my neighbour who works nights.
Any other delivery man or postman will knock on the door, I've never experienced one trying to open the door, that would freak me out and I would complain, not that they would get in, I have a dead lock on my front door so cannot be opened from the outside without the key in the lock even if the doors already unlocked. If it unnerved you and it's not a regular thing - definitely complain, even if to just let the postie know that's not something you want to happen, even if others don't mind

Dungeondragon15 · 13/01/2018 15:00

They often try my porch door (reasonable) but I would be very disturbed if they tried the front door. Complain.

Itsjustaphase84 · 13/01/2018 15:05

I probably wouldn't complain but that isnt right. They do have thieves working and contracted to them hence why theft increases at Christmas.

Willow2017 · 13/01/2018 15:33

Good grief he was only going to pop a parcel inside the door not walk in and make himself a cuppa and sandwich! He didnt even actually need to step over the threshold to do that!
Ours do this all the time Saves me a trip to collect it.
Why all the hysteria over the door being open a few inches?

Lovesagin · 13/01/2018 15:53

Because postmen shouldn't go around just opening people's front doors unless they know the person is ok with it.

I hope op complains.

TenancyTroublesAgain · 13/01/2018 15:57

@jobjobjob "What other company re delivers free of charge on your nominated day?"

Everyone I've ever used, can't remember ever being charged, it's not common.

keepingbees · 13/01/2018 16:04

I wouldn't like this. Maybe if it was a regular postman who knew you, but not some random stranger no.
I've had a postman let himself through my side gate and into my garden to leave a parcel by the back door before and that felt a bit intrusive.
They should knock, and if no answer then either leave it somewhere safe or with a neighbour.

Jobjobjob · 13/01/2018 16:05

Tenancy - try reading what I actually put......????

Redeliver. - as in they've already tried once?

Jobjobjob · 13/01/2018 16:06

Everyone I've ever used, can't remember ever being charged, it's not common

I presume you mean uncommon?

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 13/01/2018 17:26

Willow2017 It’s not acceptable for anyone to intrude on your privacy. You might be okay with it because you’re too lazy to go pick it up yourself, but thankfully a lot of people aren’t.

MepsiPax · 13/01/2018 17:39

The OP has said that the door WAS locked, and that the postman hadn't even tried knocking first. It's nice if you have a postman who will endeavour to leave your parcel even if they get no reply, but they should try knocking first!

sall74 · 13/01/2018 17:50

The post man isn't trying to "get into someone's home uninvited" as the drama queens are making out, he/she would have simply opened the door a couple of inches to leave the packet inside.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 13/01/2018 17:55

The post man isn't trying to "get into someone's home uninvited"

sall74 That’s literally exactly what he’s doing: he’s going into someone’s home uninvited.

owthathurts · 13/01/2018 17:59

Our Postie signed a letter for us just before Xmas to save me the hassle of going to the sorting office. I was very grateful.

Willow2017 · 13/01/2018 19:44

The postie doesnt need to go in the house at all he just needs to open the door wide enough to put the parcel in. Job done.

Nobody round here would bat an eyelid at that. Must be a rural thing. We all appreciate posties going above and beyond for us, hiding parcels and putting notes through letter box if we are out and slipping larger items through the door.

Quickerthanavicar · 13/01/2018 19:51

Our postman when I lived at home used to come in and make himself a cup of tea and toast.
He used to sleep with my mom and buy me and my sister presents for our birthdays and Christmas.
Everyone called him Pat, but we called him our dad.
Complain about your postman if you like, but I think that is very sad.

GetShitDone · 13/01/2018 20:05

This thread is hilarious! People getting so uptight about someone trying a door that was locked and no harm was done!

OK there are two lots of people, the solution is so simple:

If you don't want your postie opening the door and popping a parcel in (despite what people say, they don't even enter your house!) - then keep the door locked.

If you are happy for the postie to leave things in your hall/porch/just inside the door - then leave the door unlocked.

There, solved it!

(PS sometimes, if I know something is due and I'm not going to be in - I leave the door unlocked and... Shock go out...)

Sparklingbrook · 13/01/2018 20:06

It really is that simple Get. Grin

Majuna · 13/01/2018 20:11

Normal here. I never forget the day DD was screaming cos Asda man was putting shopping in the kitchen.

We were rural & kitchen was the first room as you open door. I had literally just only gone up the stairs.
