I work at the BBC and I have the rage

The Humphrys/Sopel leak is the last straw. The dripping contempt and the fact that they're laughing at us and there is nothing I can do cos I need my job makes me feel so enraged I could weep.

www.theguardian.com/media/2018/jan/12/john-humphrys-jokes-about-bbc-gender-pay-gap-in-leaked-off-air-recording

I'm sick of this attidute. Why isnt Gracie paid as well as Sopel? Because she's a woman and they think they're doing her a favour giving her the job at all. Yeah, they trot out the same old 'reasons'; previous salary (er, obvious flaw there in a discriminatory system), experience, profile blah blah.

for all the unconscious bias training, I've yet to meet a senior manager who appeared to reflect, question or examine their own actions.

They cut staff in £20 000 with about as much thought as they give to choosing a sandwich; the 'talent' pay is a different matter.

'Diverse' is anyone who doesn't tick the boxes of male, middle-class, privately educated, white. In my book that's normal, not different.

It's wrong, wrong, wrong and, as they never tire of reminding us when tightening up expenses or cutting low paid roles, it's public money.

Yup, you financed that cosy joking blokey banter. Total cost of a year of Humphrys and Sopel? Around £850 000.

Confused but mostly Angry

I am, in general, a fan of the BBC, but John Humphrys needs to go. The other presenters on Today are better, he's way overpaid and I think he's terrible on Mastermind - how on earth did he get that job? But how? They can't enforce a retirement age. Is what he said a sackable offence? Could the fact that the mics were on be deemed incompetency? I hope pressure is put to bear and he'll end up resigning.

chockaholic72 · 13/01/2018 13:06

I'm ex-BBC and left when I realised that George Entwistle's severance package of £450k was fifteen times more than my annual salary. This is for leaving a job that he didn't do a very good job of. I think the output on the whole is very good, especially BBC4, but I only listen to the Today programme when JH isn't on - I just don't have the stomach for all that shouting and interrupting first thing in the morning.

Snakie · 13/01/2018 13:30

I have complained and asked for a reply.
What he said is a bloody disgrace and he should be, at the very least, disciplined for it. I’d liked him sacked though, given the context. And then I read today he has the gall to call the person who leaked the “jokey” conversation “nasty.”
Twat.

nauticant · 13/01/2018 13:32

This discussion spurred me on to make a complaint to the BBC. I decided to criticise Humphrys' self-indulgent and often useless interviewing style and then also referred to his sneering at equal salaries for women as a black mark that damages the BBC.

To be honest, I was pleased this had come up because I've been meaning to complain for years about what a vastly expensive waste of space Humphrys is but never got round to it because I was sure my complaint would have been ignored. Maybe not this time.

I also mentioned that they should be ashamed of the partial reporting of this, involving silencing women, and that they need to reflect on how much they're pissing off their audience/the people who actually fund all of this.

BishBoshBashBop · 13/01/2018 13:38

Completely agree. Humphreys should be fired. He's well past his sell by date anyway.

Not sure the counter argument is to make an ages point.

Yes Humpheries should go, but because of what he said, which has sod all to do with his age.

raglansleeve · 13/01/2018 16:44

Responding to Ginghamstarfish post at 12.42 - there are some older women presenters, but not of the ages of Humphreys, Buerk, Bragg etc. Kirsty Wark is early sixties, Jenni Murray late sixties, but there aren't many. Most of the serious female news presenters are in their 30s or 40s, or early 50s - Mishal Husain, Sophie Raworth, Sara Montague. It'll be interesting to see if any of them are still presenting at 70......

longtallwalker · 13/01/2018 18:18

Humphreys is well past his best. When Today did it's 60th anniversary series last year on the ways certain things had changed - sex, women, work etc - in that time he soooo out of touch.
He's had his day

daisypond · 13/01/2018 18:44

Not exactly prime time, but Angela Rippon is 73 and Gloria Hunniford is 77. They're on Rip Off Britain and sometimes turn up on other stuff as well. Joan Bakewell is 84 - she's still quite often on the radio. But these people no longer front the heavyweight news programmes.

QueenThisTime · 13/01/2018 20:06

There’s nothing wrong with being old if you are still great at your job. Look at Attenborough. Humphrys has always been aggressive and unable to hold a sensible discussion because of his alpha male attitude. It’s not his age.

SurferRona · 14/01/2018 09:16

Anyone not heard the actual recording yet?

www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/tv/news/john-humphrys-jon-sopel-leaked-audio-bbc-today-programme-carrie-gracie-what-did-they-say-reaction-a8157761.html

I hadn't complained to BBC yet, but this has prompted me.

badbadhusky · 14/01/2018 16:59

Urgh. That audio file. It’s worse than the transcript. 😡

TalkinPeace · 14/01/2018 17:14

SMUG GIT

Modestine · 14/01/2018 19:44

I daren't even listen. I might explode.

badbadhusky · 14/01/2018 20:21

Smug git is the polite version, though a reasonable summation. I will be turning over every time he’s on Today in future.

TalkinPeace · 14/01/2018 20:55

Its worth listening as you can feel Sopel cringing.
He's still a cowardly shit for not slapping Humphrys down
but he knew the conversation was wrong.

Sopel's next alumni speech might be fun - I'll be the heckler with the grey hair Wink

Modestine · 15/01/2018 00:47

Yes, Sopel should have stood up to him. I should think he felt bullied and wrong-footed which may be some pathetic excuse. I still can't bring myself to listen though. Blush Not sure my blood pressure could take it!

Dozer · 15/01/2018 07:57

This morning there was an item about encouraging young women to apply to work in cyber security services, 4 interviewees. Humphries interviewing. I really cringed.

In the intro to the subsequent item about Carillion I think, the next interviewee, a man, commented that he looked forward to seeing a female “Q” in James Bond, and Humphries guffawed awkwardly.

badbadhusky · 15/01/2018 08:29

Thanks for taking one for the team, Dozer. As soon as I realised it Humphosaurus, I switched off and played a Woman’s Hour podcast instead. I feel much less ragey this morning. (If I plan to continue doing this, I need a decent clock in the bathroom - Today’s highly predictable format keeps me to time.)

LizzieSiddal · 15/01/2018 09:34

I find it ironic that Jenni Murray was sent a warning letter about her behaviour, when she dared to ask a very valid question of a 52 year old a trans woman. It was along the lines of “do you think you have a different perspective as you weren’t born a woman”. Jenni was hounded onSM and told off you her employers.
What’s happened to JH regarding this? Absolutely nothing!

Dozer · 15/01/2018 09:38

Nothing YET.

But I agree.

I switched over within 20 seconds this morning, had heard enough!

OldPony · 15/01/2018 10:31

I have also complained and have asked for a reply. Thanks OP.

Modestine · 15/01/2018 11:22

I'm thinking of complaining again about that Humphreys response to the James Bond remark. It was at about 6.45am today. He can't just sneer at everything to do with women's equality and get away with it.

mommybunny · 16/01/2018 10:27

Humphrys was on Today AGAIN this morning!!! Do you think the BBC is doubling down on him?

Firstaidnovice · 17/01/2018 11:59

Has anyone else had a reply to their complaints?

Here is mine - "Thank you for contacting us about the off-air conversation between Jon Sopel and John Humphrys. The BBC has been clear that this was an ill-advised conversation and has stated that it is committed to getting its pay structures right. It is conducting a comprehensive analysis of presenter pay which is expected to be published at the end of the month.

John Humphrys is bound by the same rules on impartiality as all other BBC presenters. Staff are entitled to their own opinions but if they choose to campaign on a topic publicly, then judgements are made as to whether they can go on to interview people on that subject. In this case, John was clearly not ‘campaigning’ on the topic.

We are grateful that you have taken the time to contact us. Please be assured that your complaint has been included on our audience feedback report that is seen by BBC senior management. "

I'm curious as to how expressing your views on mic (where you'd have to be a fool to have an expectation of your conversation remaining private, come on) is different to one tweet, but hey.

GrouchyKiwi · 17/01/2018 12:00

I got a response to my complaint this morning.

I'm not convinced that a tweet agreeing with a letter can be considered campaigning.
