I work at the BBC and I have the rage

The Humphrys/Sopel leak is the last straw. The dripping contempt and the fact that they're laughing at us and there is nothing I can do cos I need my job makes me feel so enraged I could weep.

www.theguardian.com/media/2018/jan/12/john-humphrys-jokes-about-bbc-gender-pay-gap-in-leaked-off-air-recording

I'm sick of this attidute. Why isnt Gracie paid as well as Sopel? Because she's a woman and they think they're doing her a favour giving her the job at all. Yeah, they trot out the same old 'reasons'; previous salary (er, obvious flaw there in a discriminatory system), experience, profile blah blah.

for all the unconscious bias training, I've yet to meet a senior manager who appeared to reflect, question or examine their own actions.
They cut staff in £20 000 with about as much thought as they give to choosing a sandwich; the 'talent' pay is a different matter.

'Diverse' is anyone who doesn't tick the boxes of male, middle-class, privately educated, white. In my book that's normal, not different.

It's wrong, wrong, wrong and, as they never tire of reminding us when tightening up expenses or cutting low paid roles, it's public money.

Yup, you financed that cosy joking blokey banter. Total cost of a year of Humphrys and Sopel? Around £850 000.

Confused but mostly Angry

I'd love to 'shove it' to the BBC. I've campaigned in their favour in the past but I can't do that anymore.
Actions will always speak louder than words. MrsHathaway, I like.
I'd like to print fake money with JH head on and -litter GB- more Wolfie Smith than Emmeline Pankhurst!
Up for action. If that helps anyone 'daring to suck' and posting plans.

Why do people think ITV/C4/5 are any better? The BBC is just more transparent in its sexism than the other media is. The others aren't bastions of feminism and equality in comparison.

They are not any better but the way the BBC is funded should make them more accountable.

Am also enraged by this topic. I do love the BBC in many ways but also feel disappointed in its many flaws.

I agree that is it not the answer for more/all women to resign - all that would do is give the blokes exactly what they want. Striking or resigning only works if people want what you have to give and they feel the lack of it. Women resigning would just make more room for medicre men.

Also I am not sure a swtich off would get noticed, and as they don;t rely on advertising revenue, would they really care that much?

What about a campaign where people cancel the same month of the direct debit payment? Then phone up sometime later to pay and so avoid any fees or court action. I am pretty sure that a whole heap of missed and late payments would make the BBC sit up and take notice.

I don't think they'd notice the actual switch off but they seem to be obsessed with what's trending on Twitter. It would be very Twitter to boycott the BBC for IWD Grin Grin Grin Just needs a few "influencers" to prepare the ground a few days in advance, with suitable hashtags prepared by social media gurus.

Of course it wouldn't change their behaviour but it would potentially embarrass them briefly if it was widely reported and they had to come up with a statement for other news channels (ITV love it when BBC are slagged off, and vice versa) - I have W1A in my head, obviously.

I've sent a complaint - thanks for the link. We all should, ideally.

The presenter on C4 News said that what the BBC really need of course is a Head of Values. Grin

I wish the BBC would slash the pay of the whole lot of stale, male and pale arrogant tossers who think they are worth millions.
I don't care who broadcasts the news as long as they are competent.
And God yeah the cosy smugness of Radio 4..the total lack of believable working class characters, the awful plays..the whole organisation is STILL like a club for private school, Oxbridge boys who weren't quite ruthless enough to go into the City.

My understanding is that they ARE obliged to take complaints seriously especially of bias. A man who is opposed to gender equality should not pretend to be an unbiased interviewer in a segment on equal pay.

They do reply to complaints as long as you leave your details.

alltherage you are of course spot on with your comment on that first rule of broadcasting..."NEVER say anything in a studio you wouldn't be happy being broadcast". As you say it's one of the first things you learn. That transcript of their conversation quite simply demonstrates Humphrys' arrogance and sense that the normal rules don't apply to him.....that and the fact it was probably four in the morning.www.mumsnet.com/emo/te/11.gif.pagespeed.ce.w3SwuqwArR.gif

YANBU. Bloated pay at the BBC is a disgrace. No-one there should be on more than the Prime Minister, never mind £2.2m like Graham Norton. Journalists shouldn’t be part of the establishment and rich elite.

Listening with half an ear to Today this morning - is JH being unnaturally meek and polite (for him, anyway)? Or am I mistaken?

Have complained.
Now we need someone to make a FOI request to the BBC to ask how many complaints they have received.

The story is on the front page of some newspapers but I can't seem to spot it on the BBC news website. Wonder why

I've lost all patience with the BBC after thr whole Jimmy Saville/Yewtrew thing. They knew about the abuse and covered it up. Disgusting. This new pay furore doesn't surprise me and this is why I no longer watch the BBC and will not pay the licence fee

To slightly derail the topic, where are the equivalent 74-year-old female presenters on primetime shows?
