Who grates cheese anymore?

I accidentally got into a conversation with a woman I don’t know at work today and whilst regaling us with the fact that she never chops anything and buys all veg pre chopped, she seemed aghast that anyone bothers to grate cheese and why would you when you can buy it pre grated.

Maybe because it’s covered in potato starch, expensive and not great quality?

Am I the only cheese grater left?

We don’t buy anything pre prepared, we grow as much as we can, hunt as much as we can. If I have to go to the supermarket I feel like I have failed.

metacrisis · 10/01/2018 19:49

I did also mention all the extra packaging and plastic she was using in the pre packaged veg but she didn’t seem to give a shit

Probably because in general the point is wrong. A bag of chopped carrots has the same amount of packaging as a bag of whole carrots. Same for most veg, there is a bag on it either way.

Currently nursing a grated knuckle !!
The perils of the old way, l grate and chop all veg. My only indulgence is lazy garlic in a jar Smile

TheEmmaDilemma · 10/01/2018 19:50

I had got in the habit of buying grated. It was only a thread on here that mentioned the starch that made me think.

I never looked back. Grater for life.

Even cheaper cheese is better than shit ready grated.

Titsywoo · 10/01/2018 19:52

I used pre-grated a few times but it just isn't the same and then I did low carb and couldn't use it because of the potato starch. I have a box grater and hand held smaller ones for parmesan. I used to buy pre-grated parmesan all the time but then read something about it having wood shavings in it! Probably bollocks but it put me right off.

Lovemygirls2015 · 10/01/2018 19:53

I love cooking and chop all my own veg but rarely grate cheese. I buy grated and it tastes absolutely fine. What about mozzarella as you can’t grate the fresh stuff. Doesn’t change the flavour if you’re using it in a sauce or to melt. I would challenge anyone to blind taste and I bet they wouldn’t know the difference.

PinkBuffalo · 10/01/2018 19:53

I have never thought to buy pre grated cheese. I chop up everything else, the only thing I get ready done is pineapple cos I can't sort out a fresh one (not for lack of trying, I have dyspraxia)

Parker231 · 10/01/2018 19:55

I know I’m paying more for ready prepared vegetables, salad, cheese etc but for ease, time and convenience I’m more than happy to continue paying the premium.

I don’t like the majority of ready prepared meals but do buy a lot from Cook.

Posters are very critical of others who don’t want to spend what little free time we have preparing time consuming meals. Tonight jacket potato from a box, grated cheese and a bag of salad - all ready to eat within 10 minutes of walking into the house.

MrsPestilence · 10/01/2018 19:55

When the DC were little, the food processor used to grate the cheese for us (a kg at a time). Now they are grown and all have excellent knife and grater skills. No martyrdom, just good life skills.

maddiemookins16mum · 10/01/2018 19:55

I can honestly say I've never purchased ready-grated cheese or pre-cut fruit.
My only downfall is the occasional packet of ready chopped soup mix veg of which our ASDA always seems to have several packs of in the reduced veg section. I picked a packet up today for 29p and it will be fine in the fridge until I make soup at the weekend.

I did though buy some ready cut carrot batons that were also reduced to 20p for snacking on at work once.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 10/01/2018 19:56

cherry you're probably right-but this sort of thing I fell for-

www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-02-16/the-parmesan-cheese-you-sprinkle-on-your-penne-could-be-wood

to be honest it's very expensive and not very nice so that's it for me really Wink

Pre grated cheese is like fake cheese! I grate my own, and I grate hard boiled eggs for egg mayo too.

Curlyshabtree · 10/01/2018 19:59

I grated cheese earlier. I have 2 graters plus a little nutmeg one. It’s great to grate.

brownelephant · 10/01/2018 19:59

grated mozzarella is just - wrong

Cherrycokewinning · 10/01/2018 19:59

Loling at no wonder people are in debt. No, people are not in debt for pre grated cheese. Some people just have more money than others - shock horror.

What’s wrong with potato starch?

JaceLancs · 10/01/2018 19:59

I grate cheese - chop veg and make most things from scratch
Due to food allergies and dieting it’s simpler anyway
I am in no way a martyr and due to long hours always do simple quick stuff like stir fries or grilled things with steamed veg

mirandasings · 10/01/2018 20:00

I used to buy grated cheese religiously, because you know, one must never grate ones own cheese 😂 but then I decided to just buy a block (for much cheaper too btw) then I (gasp) grated it, put it in to two containers. One in the fridge one in the freezer. It actually wasn’t that bad and I can now proudly say I AM A GRATER! I will never waste the extra couple of quid on grated cheese again!

Bimbler · 10/01/2018 20:00

I sometimes buy grated mozzarella when I want to make a cheesetastic, hangover busting, pasta bake. But generally grated cheese is best avoided. It's just weird bland pap.

Bimbler · 10/01/2018 20:02

Grated cheese is disgusting. It's for lazy non cooks , same as prechoppped veges

Nothing wrong with a bit of laziness but none of the grated cheeses are cheeses that I actually want to eat.

I'm fully onboard with frozen chopped onions however!

WorldWideWanderer · 10/01/2018 20:04

I also didn't know grated cheese is covered in starch...? I have just gone back to grating cheese, I have been buying ready-grated up until now but realised it's much more expensive. So now I have another reason to grate my own!

BlooBagoo · 10/01/2018 20:07

I don''t think pre-grated melts as well as grating it yourself, and if you have it in a sandwich it just falls out everywhere, even if you try to squish it down (although I tend to use sliced in sandwiches but then that would involve me buying cheese twice if I bought pre-grated). If I have more than a small amount to do I just grate it in the food processor so it doesn't grate my fingers off too hurt my hands.

I don't mind prechopped veg though, as long as it's the fresh bags, only really do peas or sweetcorn frozen as they don't go squishy.

numbereightyone · 10/01/2018 20:08

Cherrycoke Are you deliberately missing the point, which is that people spend far too much on food these days.

Cherrycokewinning · 10/01/2018 20:08

It’s not a point though is it? Unless you have some evidence people spend too much on food nowadays. Especially the naughty pre prepped cheese purchasers
