Who grates cheese anymore?

I accidentally got into a conversation with a woman I don’t know at work today and whilst regaling us with the fact that she never chops anything and buys all veg pre chopped, she seemed aghast that anyone bothers to grate cheese and why would you when you can buy it pre grated.

Maybe because it’s covered in potato starch, expensive and not great quality?

Am I the only cheese grater left?

I don't buy grated cheese.
don't grate either. I cut slices or blocks off a block

heartyrebel · 10/01/2018 19:36

Grated cheese is disgusting. It's for lazy non cooks , same as prechoppped veges Grin

YearOfYouRemember · 10/01/2018 19:36

I bought pre grated cheese once. Not sure why. Never would again. Since I frequently grate my fingers if the recipe will work I put in small cubes instead of using the grater.

Cherrycokewinning · 10/01/2018 19:36

It’s not worthy or non lazy to do some worthless drudge work that modern conveniences can take care of for you.

headintheproverbial · 10/01/2018 19:37

I hate grating but still don't buy disgusting pre grated cheese!!

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 10/01/2018 19:37

I grate and chop daily. Makes me happy. Love the prep of cooking.

Read an article somewhere that said there are are sorts of horrible fillers like wood shavings in grated cheese

KeepTheBloodyNoiseDown · 10/01/2018 19:37

gunsandbanjos if I’m feeling well enough I’d rather do it myself, but sometimes that isn’t an option.
Before I got ill I never really thought about how much effort it can take to do tiny tasks, but things like not having to grate cheese can be the difference between me being able to cook for myself, and giving up and having biscuits or something for dinner now.

TatianaLarina · 10/01/2018 19:37

I’ve seen no martyrdom or handwringing over grated cheese, posters are just saying it tastes a bit pants.

No wonder everybody is in debt in this country. So many people spend ridiculous amounts of money on food. The supermarkets take them for mugs.

“Read an article somewhere that said there are are sorts of horrible fillers like wood shavings in grated cheese “

What a load of shite Grin

whiskyowl · 10/01/2018 19:38

I grate it with the food processor. Is that OK or cheating by Mumsnet standards?

Pseudousername · 10/01/2018 19:39

Cheese grater here but diced frozen onion is LIFE!

numbereightyone · 10/01/2018 19:39

I could see Nigella doing that whiskeyowl so I think that's OK.

Shadow1986 · 10/01/2018 19:41

Ewwww no pre grated cheese is powdery and rubbery....
I do buy pre made mash though!

UsedtobeFeckless · 10/01/2018 19:41

Just grated a load over supper ... l like chopping things up, too Grin

That said, l hate peeling potatoes and avoid them at all costs!

Buxbaum · 10/01/2018 19:41

Fun fact - I recently learnt that pregnant women in France are advised to avoid ready-grated cheese as well as the usual mould-ripened and washed-rind cheeses. I wondered if it might be a listeria risk.

Butterymuffin · 10/01/2018 19:41

Cauliflower steak? What fresh hell is this?

I also still grate cheese. Firstly, it's cheaper to buy the blocks, and secondly, I like it grated very finely in a number of things I cook.

Needmorehands · 10/01/2018 19:42

We buy huge bricks of cheese from the wholesalers, chop it into smaller pieces then the DC (4!) have a grater each and we freeze bags of grated cheese :D it goes crumbly when frozen, but doesn't matter when grated. So handy for sauces

BuzzKillington · 10/01/2018 19:42

DH buys grated mozzarella, as well as whole. For pizza, I think.

*not a cook.

Valerrie · 10/01/2018 19:43

It's for lazy non cooks

Or disabled people.

HaHaHmm · 10/01/2018 19:43

Home-grated cheese freezes really well. On the odd occasion that I go to Costco with a friend who's a member I'll buy a breeze block of Cheddar, grate it in the food processor and bag it up to freeze. Very handy to chuck straight into cheese sauces etc.

GrumpyOldMare · 10/01/2018 19:43

We use pre grated cheese at work otherwise nothing else would get done in the kitchen

TatianaLarina · 10/01/2018 19:44

Grated cheese has potato starch in it - that may be why it tastes peculiar.

IndigoMoonFlower · 10/01/2018 19:46

We grate here. DH will only eat grated cheese in his sandwiches and we have it on top of shepherds pie too. I also make home made pizza as it tastes better.
