Who grates cheese anymore?

I accidentally got into a conversation with a woman I don’t know at work today and whilst regaling us with the fact that she never chops anything and buys all veg pre chopped, she seemed aghast that anyone bothers to grate cheese and why would you when you can buy it pre grated.

Maybe because it’s covered in potato starch, expensive and not great quality?

Am I the only cheese grater left?

I believe in pre-prepared anything, as far as possible, all the way up to ready meals. But I draw the line at grated cheese. Exposure to air ruins cheddar, grating it exposes all of it to air. Grating it long before using makes no sense. (DW has bought grated cheese in the past, it tastes horrible.)

I only discovered how cheap & tasty grated cheese is, recently. Ruddy marvelous!! Eco-friendly, too. Cannot imagine grating again.

You don't have to use hot water & soap & a scrub brush to clean the grater for ages afterwards. Bits of cheese don't get washed down the sink b/c too hard to get off the grater. Economy of scale. So eco-friendly compared to all the waste if we grate at home.

I don't think the grated cheese we buy has potato starch in it. I've seen it in past ingredient list, but not in stuff we buy now.

Trump wants to Make America Grate again, so he doesn't buy the ready stuff. I buy ready grated Mozzarella for omelettes.

I quite often buy shredded parmesan or grated Mexican cheese blend.

It tastes absolutely fine for what I use it for (lasagne, pasta, quesadillas, etc).

I'm not in the UK though, so I don't know what they're doing to your grated cheese.

I always grate and generally chop but I do also keep lazy garlic and lazy ginger in the fridge.

But I still buy regular cheese too. Trader Joes' Unexpected Cheddar is one of the finest pleasures in life.

We love cheese in this house.

I only buy grated to put on pasta dishes, and anything that’s going to melt. I have a large block for sandwiches/snacks. If I run out of grated I’ll use the block.

But as for ready chopped veg, no, I’m not that lazy or rich.

I should really get chopped onion, as I only have to look at an onion and I’m in tears.

We hand grate for standard amounts but when cooking with cheese or if there are lots of cheese oddments left, we drag out the food processor. Sometimes I ‘accidentally’ over grate it and it forms small soft balls that obviously have to be eaten straight away...

I then whizz couple of slices of bread through to make cheesy breadcrumbs which helps to clean up the bowl and blades (lazy and clever!). We do extra of both to freeze.

I grate cheese. I have tried pre grated but it doesn’t last as long and it doesn’t taste that nice either. It’s got like a weird powdery thing to it.

I grate cheese, chop veg, crush garlic, peel potatoes, make gravy from scratch (no fucking granules) .. and none of it is difficult nor time consuming.

But If people want to spend their money on diced onions or ready made mash or grated cheese to save a few seconds then let them. They work for it, their life, their choice.

I like good quality cheese! I'd never buy ready grated unless I was seriously pressed and it was for a children's party.

For ordinary grating...which I do a lot of...it's good Cheddar only. Unless we're talking about hard cheeses....again...only good stuff.

I buy and grate. If i need loads though i buy the block and ask the deli counter guy to grate it with the machine.

No idea why but my kids have always thought it a huge treat to be allowed to grate the cheese. And why on earth would I pay for someone to deprive them of that pleasure?

I try and grate but because my hands like to seize up a lot, i will use pre grated so i don’t end up fucking my hands up even more.

We buy grated cheese for the dog (Known as "Dog Cheese" along with "Dog Ham" which is that horrible weird chicken roll stuff)

Sometimes I grate, sometimes I don't. If its parmasan I usually grate as it tastes better. If its cheese sauce I just lob some pre-grated cheddar at it. I do chop my own veg...except when the machine does it
