Who grates cheese anymore?

I accidentally got into a conversation with a woman I don’t know at work today and whilst regaling us with the fact that she never chops anything and buys all veg pre chopped, she seemed aghast that anyone bothers to grate cheese and why would you when you can buy it pre grated.

Maybe because it’s covered in potato starch, expensive and not great quality?

Am I the only cheese grater left?

Bag of wank, pregrated

metacrisis · 10/01/2018 21:58

Not weird at all, just responding to what you actually said. If that isn't what you mean, speak more carefully perhaps?

gunsandbanjos · 10/01/2018 21:59

Ok whatever, you’re clearly far superior to me.

I think you are being ridiculous metacrisis. Nobody would argue that people with disabilities who find such things difficult shouldn't but things which makes their lives easier.

alotalotalot · 10/01/2018 21:59

I use both. Pre-grated for pasta bakes etc and nice cheese that you eat fresh and uncooked.

Who said they did? wtf are you talking about?

gunsandbanjos · 10/01/2018 22:03

Hey, I’ve found an empty room for you to start an argument in...

Ive occasionally bought grated when in a huge rush but it tastes shit and you can't make everything with it. At least with a block you can grate or chop or make small blocks or just eat a giant block in your hand if you see fit!

user1497997754 · 10/01/2018 22:07

I love pre grated mozzarella...

metacrisis · 10/01/2018 22:07

why would I need one when there are so many fools here judging people for buying perfectly normal foodstuffs to argue with?

IrkThePurist · 10/01/2018 22:09

Rosewatersoap I bought frozen butternut squash today and its tasteless and watery.

Bastardingcough · 10/01/2018 22:09

I grate cheese but will admit to pre packed veg. Only casserole veg packs though - I HATE cutting up Swede.

Bimbler · 10/01/2018 22:10

If people are going to start getting all Tony Montana with one another over cheese please don't let it be over some mild grated cheddar. If you're gonna fall out fall out over a massive wheel of Stilton or a fuckton of pecorino.

Standards, ladies.

Hidingalion · 10/01/2018 22:15

is anyone else now unable to read or say the word grate or grated? They have gradually become totally alien-looking after 7 pages. Really grating on my nerves.

NoFuckingRoomOnMyBroom · 10/01/2018 22:22

As much as I hate fucking about grating cheese there is no way I'd use the bag of bollocks that is pre-grated-seriously wtf is it? It doesn't even melt, vile stuff Envy - not envy.

fruitpastille · 10/01/2018 22:23

I also think it's the height of laziness to buy ready ground flour.

KindDogsTail · 10/01/2018 22:24

I do usually as ready grated cheese is wrecked by some sort of flour and is pretty run of the mill in the first place - the cheddar version not as good as mature cheddar, for example.

peppapig17 · 10/01/2018 22:25

@megletthesecond
I buy grated cheese when I'm making industrial quantities of cheese sauce for filing the freezer with lasagne.

^ same lol

Oh no Sad. I love butternut squash soup but really hate am too clumsy to peel it.

justforthisthread101 · 10/01/2018 22:30

@metacrisis because I've eaten a roast dinner that was prepared using frozen roast potatoes and yorkshire pudding and honestly, it wasn't very nice.

It takes approximately 90 seconds to mix the batter for yorkshires, at a fraction of the cost, and none of the packaging, of buying Aunt Bessie's. That's why I ask why.

justforthisthread101 · 10/01/2018 22:32

Grin @Bimbler

numbereightyone · 10/01/2018 22:41

I admit to usually buying in Aunt Bessie's Yorkshire puddings but my freezer is broken so I made my own using James Martin's recipe. They were delicious clouds of yorkshire pudding heaven.

DeadDoorpost · 10/01/2018 22:42

DH hates me slicing cheese. Has to be grated so it goes further.

He's a cheese addict.

TatianaLarina · 10/01/2018 22:45

He can grate it himself then...

numbereightyone · 10/01/2018 22:49

I do love the fact that we can all discuss the rights and wrongs of grated cheese over 14 pages. This is what makes mumsnet special.
