Who grates cheese anymore?

I accidentally got into a conversation with a woman I don’t know at work today and whilst regaling us with the fact that she never chops anything and buys all veg pre chopped, she seemed aghast that anyone bothers to grate cheese and why would you when you can buy it pre grated.

Maybe because it’s covered in potato starch, expensive and not great quality?

Am I the only cheese grater left?

I'm the same apple and grated cheese is such a comfort food I love it

The prechopped veg is horrible to me. I don't need to get over myself. I'm not so lazy that I can't chop a few veg thanks.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 10/01/2018 21:14

I grate cheese. My parents used to buy pre-grated cheddar from M&S - for the cats.

Cherrycokewinning · 10/01/2018 21:15

It’s in your head Mike. Unless you shop at Iceland

SpareASquare · 10/01/2018 21:15

I've bought plenty of pre-grated cheese over the years.
These days I buy a big block and grate all at once with the kitchenaid. Kept in a container in the fridge.

I actually have no problem with pre-grated cheese. I buy blocks because it is cheaper but because I usually only grate for melting, pre grated is fine.

After what feels like a lifetime of chopping, grating etc, my biggest indulgence these days is to buy pre cut where I can. My meat is diced/cut, my veg is cut and if I didn't have a means to grate so quickly and easily, my cheese would probably be pre grated Smile

Clearly you need to get way the fuck over yourself if you think laziness is the only reason people buy prechopped veg.
And if you buy horrible veg thats your own problem really.

LightastheBreeze · 10/01/2018 21:16

Grated cheese does seem to taste better than a block and it is easy to eat loads when having a grating session.

Serialweightwatcher · 10/01/2018 21:16

MrsKoala I always buy frozen veg to put in curries/chilli/bolognese and have started using frozen onions in my soup maker because I don't always want to be bothered to cut up a full onion

iamyourequal · 10/01/2018 21:16

Re There’s very little difference in price
A quick check of supermarket sites proves this untrue. (How sad am I?) Medium Grated cheddar is £8 per kilo, verses £5.25 to £6per kilo for exact same block cheese!

PasstheStarmix · 10/01/2018 21:16

Imstickingwiththisone I agree with the mozzarella grated being best for pizza etc (assume they do a block of it on cheese counter but have to admitt I haven't looked), the balls are more for salads I think.

Cherrycokewinning · 10/01/2018 21:17

Lazy. Ha ha ha. Let me see. I:

Have 2 children
Work 60 hours a week running a division
Go to the gym 4 times a week
Am a school governor
Visit friends and family all over the country at weekends.

Yet you.... grate cheese. And I’m lazy? Grin

Serialweightwatcher · 10/01/2018 21:18

Forgot to say I grate a big block and freeze most of it in freezer bags - it's great (sorry) for pizzas and sauces straight from frozen or defrosts in no time

MaximaDeWit · 10/01/2018 21:20

We are graters here. Much easier to have a big block in the fridge as sometimes you want grated, sometimes you want sliced!

The only pre-chopped anything I buy is frozen sofrito because it's genuinely cheaper and more convenient and less wasteful than buying the veg and doing it myself

I grate so much my grater is broken 😱😳.

PasstheStarmix · 10/01/2018 21:21

We buy frozen pineapple and berries because handy for sticking in porridge and with yoghurt etc

MaximaDeWit · 10/01/2018 21:22

Any one else read the word "grate" so much it doesn't look real anymore?!

PasstheStarmix · 10/01/2018 21:23

Yes getting double vision...Hmm

Iwantaunicorn · 10/01/2018 21:24

There’s currently cheese being grated in my house 😀

Dementedswan · 10/01/2018 21:24

All cheese is grated by me when needed. Only time it's not grated is when I need chunky slices for cheese on toast.

All veg freshly prepared. Dh once suggested frozen Brussels....just No! The only acceptabke frozen veg are garden peas.

I think it makes a huge difference in texture and taste.

Smallpotatolove · 10/01/2018 21:25

I always buy pre grated cheese, can't stand grating my own. Always buy pre chopped onions too and lazy garlic.

PasstheStarmix · 10/01/2018 21:26

I will eat frozen veg if run or if fresh but always find that watery taste hard to get rid of. They just hold more water and it must be something to do with the freezing process they've undergone I think

PasstheStarmix · 10/01/2018 21:26

out of

ivenoideawhatimdoing · 10/01/2018 21:28

My Mum used to give me a pound to grate up our block of Cathedral City for lunches - damn right I'll be paying my kids too.

I hate pre grated cheese with a passion

happymummy12345 · 10/01/2018 21:29

Pre grated cheese tastes like rubber, we always grate our own.
