Who grates cheese anymore?

I accidentally got into a conversation with a woman I don’t know at work today and whilst regaling us with the fact that she never chops anything and buys all veg pre chopped, she seemed aghast that anyone bothers to grate cheese and why would you when you can buy it pre grated.

Maybe because it’s covered in potato starch, expensive and not great quality?

Am I the only cheese grater left?

I just remembered we used to buy this when our twins were weaning and either stick it in the blender to make purée and then when they were older they used it to learn how to use a fork!
Rank though really once boiled all the different veg tasted the same.. Blush

Who grates cheese anymore?

We buy pre-grated Cheddar. It’s much easier to use the amount we want. We never finish the big blocks of cheese. Grating them always results in bits breaking off so we end up with various chunks of differing sizes. There’s very little difference in price.
We don’t buy pre-grated parmesan as it smells of sick!
We don’t tend to buy pre-chopped veg.

sproutsandparsnips · 10/01/2018 20:51

I usually buy everything and chop it myself, except when I am cooking for 50 after a rugby match, then I buy frozen chopped veg and frozen cooked sliced chicken. Oh and a large bag of grated cheese.

Bimbler · 10/01/2018 20:52

Before I put slices of buffalo mozzarella on a pizza I leave them to dry out a bit on some kitchen roll. Helps avoid those milky puddles.

MrsKoala · 10/01/2018 20:54

mydog my processor goes straight in the dishwasher. I don't ever wash it up!

brizzledrizzle · 10/01/2018 20:55

I always buy grated cheese, I have done since I grated my thumb when I got distracted.

SukiPutTheEarlGreyOn · 10/01/2018 20:57

The quality of cheese used in ready grated packs is inferior quality and usually wouldn't be good enough to be sold In blocks to supermarkets/retailers. The ready mixed stuff that they put on cheap pizzas is called 'analogue' which wouldn't fill anyone with confidence. PiL owned a cheese distribution business so anything pre-grated is still seen as a dairy crime Smile

KenForPM · 10/01/2018 20:58

Pre-grated tastes fine to me. I did buy some Tesco Value pre-grated cheddar that was tasteless/plasticky/gross, but the other stuff is fine.

Now I just want a load of cheese GrinGrin

DearShirt · 10/01/2018 21:01

Why does anyone think there's virtue in chopping your own veg?

Crumbs1 · 10/01/2018 21:01

Pre grated cheese doesn’t look, taste or have the texture of real cheese. It’s horrid.

LightastheBreeze · 10/01/2018 21:03

I have bought grated cheese but have found the best thing to do is to grate a large block of cheddar and then just store it in the freezer to use as needed.

KenForPM · 10/01/2018 21:04

Jesus. I’m surprised at how snobby people are about bloody cheese. Preferring the taste of block cheese is fine but the accusations of “they’ve clearly got more money than sense” are ridiculous.
Who the actual fuck cares??

Love2cook · 10/01/2018 21:05

I only buy grated mozzarella for home made pizzas and I do buy chopped frozen veg such as onions, peppers and butternut squash because it's cheaper to just use what you need and nothing ever goes off ect plus I hate chopping onions!

MaggieS41 · 10/01/2018 21:06

Pre chopped veg are slimy and fast like shit. I grate my own cheese but I admit I do buy the occasional bag of pre-grated mozzarella for making quick pizzas for my kids!

LightastheBreeze · 10/01/2018 21:06

The pre grated cheese is often quite cheap anyway.

MikeUniformMike · 10/01/2018 21:07

DearShirt. Pre chopped veg is horrible especially the spiralised stuff

Welshmaenad · 10/01/2018 21:08

I buy grated cheese and pre chopped veg often. I'm not a 'lazy non cook', but I have M.E. and I'm a single mum and the less time I spend standing in the kitchen making food for my children, the less pain I end up in. At least I try to feed them veg/home cooked food eh?

metacrisis · 10/01/2018 21:09

what bollocks about the veg. Its not slimy, its not horrible, its just bloody chopped! Get over yourselves.

Serialweightwatcher · 10/01/2018 21:09

I always grate cheese - I use my Fresh Express and I love it Grin ... I also chop veg and wash my own lettuce!

notafish · 10/01/2018 21:11

We grate cheese. Even my children can tell when they're been served ready grated, after years of having it served at after school club, and would rather get stuck in with the grater than themselves.

MrsKoala · 10/01/2018 21:12

i buy pre chopped frozen onions, frozen chopped spinach, frozen chopped roasted meditteranean veg, frozen mash, frozen mashed swede and carrot, frozen peas and sweetcorn. Saves time and sometimes i am holding the baby so don't have hands free to chop stuff. Often handfuls of frozen veg chucked into stuff is the best we can hope for.

applebags · 10/01/2018 21:12

My DH buys pre-grated cheese whereas I buy blocks.

They definitely taste different but I'm an animal and eat grated cheese by the spoonful so I try to avoid it if possible Confused

PasstheStarmix · 10/01/2018 21:13

Nope I still grate cheese and carrot and random other stuff...Hmm

applebags · 10/01/2018 21:14

The word 'grate' is making no sense now I've RTFT....

UrgentScurryfunge · 10/01/2018 21:14

I buy grated cheese. DS loves cheese but only if it's grated, so the grater was always used and a pain to wash by hand. Much easier to put a sprinkle on straight from the bag than doing it manually when he eats it so frequently.
