to get DS the flu vaccine even though his father is adamant he is not to get it??

Over the past week I've been concerned with the reports about this nasty strain of the flu going around. Neither of my children got the vaccine when it was offered in schools - DD is too old to be in the category it's offered to, and ticked no on the box for DS (kicking myself now) - my reasoning I suppose was well I never got a flu vaccine as a child, my first child never had one as it wasn't until a couple years ago it was rolled out.

I am now really worried though seeing that this year it is flooring even healthy adults, and even killing people who were previously healthy. I'm a bit of an anxious person in general, especially when it comes to my children, and I've been up the past few nights worrying and worrying all day long now that it has been confirmed in my area. I am thinking that it is best to get both children vaccinated now, although I am a little worried what would happen if they caught the flu on top of side effects whilst waiting for the vaccine to take effect - but I will discuss this with the GP.

DS dad (who has actual 50:50 joint residency and PR) however is saying that I have only changed my mind due to scaremongering and my own anxiety, and he is quite vehemently saying he is not to get it. I keep trying to get through to him with facts and stats and told him when the school phoned and everything, but he is not budging, just keeps shouting HE IS NOT TO GET IT. NO WAY etc on the phone.

I am just at a loss of what to do in this situation. I would hate it if it was the other way round and he made a decision like this going against me, and I am really uncomfortable with just doing it anyway when his other parent doesn't consent. I think all hell will break loose with my ex if I do -we had the same situation with the MMR and eventually I paid hundreds for single jabs and just did it anyway he was livid for months- and I really don't want the fallout. But then on the other hand, I really REALLY do not want the children contracting this flu without at least some protection (according to GP it's 60% effective and if they do get it despite the vaccine it will be milder, whether that's correct I don't know but i do trust the GP).

I thought about getting it and not telling him, but then quickly put that out my head as it's unfair all round, esp on DS and potentially dangerous if his dad doesn't have the full facts when he has him all weekend.

My sister said I should just get it done and text him to tell him on the way there.

I just don't know what to do!! AIBU?? And does anyone have any medical knowledge, or what would you do?? no flaming please as I am trying to do the right thing

And when/if one of your children get sick, presumably he will be the one taking time off from work to care for them...?

londonista · 10/01/2018 19:42

ThisLittleKitty

Don't worry, my immunised children will protect yours Hmm

ThisLittleKitty · 10/01/2018 19:58

No need to worry about my kids. It contains gelatine therefore unsuitable for them and Like I said I didn't have it growing up.

dementedpixie · 10/01/2018 20:04

The current jab does cover H3N2. The trivalent jab doesn't cover an influenza B strain which is partly what the daily mail link talks about. The nasal spray for kids protects against 4 flu strains including Aussie flu.

NewBigPrinz · 10/01/2018 20:05

I have the flu vaccination because getting the flu could cause an exacerbation in my long-term health condition that would cause a permanent worsening in my existing disability. The fact that the vaccine is only 40% effective, potentially, terrifies me so I’d really like as many people as possible to be vaccinated to reduce the spread of flu.

Children aren’t only vaccinated to protect them, it’s because they are very efficient spreaders of flu and stopping them getting flu keeps others safe. Your DH’s attitude is disgusting, selfish as well as stupid.

CommanderDaisy · 10/01/2018 20:17

I'm an Aussie, and the vaccinations for flu we have here didn't cover the "Aussie flu". Could be different in the UK.
My GP's theory was a flu jab increased immunity generally so was still worth it, even if it did't deal with the current strain.

pinkhorse · 10/01/2018 20:19

My ds has the flu vaccine and has now had the flu since Friday. It doesn't cover all strains

Nanny0gg · 10/01/2018 20:23

I also didn't have it growing up so don't think it's as needed as people make up.

You're using that as a reason? Jeez

What is the problem with gelatin by the way?

londonista · 10/01/2018 20:31

It's made from animals.
You'd think tbf that they'd have figured out a way to deliver vaccines without it now, as loads of people don't eat gelatine.

Waits to be corrected...

MissConductUS · 10/01/2018 20:46

Does anyone know if the jab is OK, I thought the nasal one was better or more effective for children??

The nasal spray vaccine was taken off the market in the US after studies showed that it's less effective than the injection, so you're likely better off with the jab.

"I am now really worried though seeing that this year it is flooring even healthy adults, and even killing people who were previously healthy."

Yes, all flu does this. As there hasn't been a severe outbreak for some time now, people have lost sight of how deadly it is.

Clitoria · 10/01/2018 21:00

I don’t eat animals but I still got the flu vaccine because flu is intensely miserable for a healthy person and deadly for anyone with compromised health. Some gormless fucker I sadly know chooses not to vaccinate her kid who has health issues and asthma, because her boyfriend loves clickbait spam encouraging the most stupid people in society to let their kids spread/die of preventable diseases. People don’t understand herd immunity or how lucky we are to live somewhere that people aren’t left disabled or dead because WE HAVE VACCINES. Western entitlement at its finest.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 11/01/2018 12:29

Sorry if you feel I’m being rude OP but genuinely, you paid £100 for a private GP to give you an opinion and some print outs, most of which you are also getting on this thread and can be readily found on google? Your ex must have really done a number on your confidence if you’re doing all that to try and persuade him it’s the best thing to do.

FWIW, I would have it done for my children without a second thought.

MissConductUS · 13/01/2018 18:30

FWIW, it's been an historically bad flu season in the US so far. We already have 20 pediatric flu deaths reported and it won't peak for weeks yet.

TooManyPaws · 13/01/2018 19:20

Headlines in Scotland yesterday were all about the healthy 18 year old woman who died of pneumonia following the flu, despite being airlifted to a major hospital. A friend of mine in London has the flu and woke up in A&E this morning, having been rushed there.

I'm 57 and had the flu jag by gun every year at school. I remember the 1977 Russian flu when schools were closed due to the vast numbers. I was one of the first at my school to catch it and I will never describe a bad cold as flu after that. Even breathing hurt. I had a mild case a couple of winters ago and I still spent most of Christmas and New Year unconscious in bed. As I have adult onset asthma, I have the jag every year and Aussie flu is covered this year bearing mutations - except of course in the rabid idiot press like the Daily Heil and Sexpress.

TooManyPaws · 13/01/2018 19:24

And both times, it would have been so much worse, even life-threatening, had I not had the jag.

I think so many people describe a bad cold as "flu", many don't realise how bad it actually is. The 1918+ pandemic killed more people than WW1 and mutated for a second wave; it also killed mainly young people and extremely rapidly.

Really, don't diss flu.

ghostyslovesheets · 13/01/2018 19:26

from the BBC
What about the flu jab?
The vaccine is designed to protect against the type of flu circulating in any given season.
Every year, the World Health Organization reviews the global situation and recommends which flu strains should go into the vaccine to be manufactured for the following season.
This year's flu jab is designed to protect against H3N2 as well as some other strains

www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-42602394

I've had the jab and my youngest has had the nasal vaccine - can't afford to get my eldest 2 done but would if I could

londonista · 13/01/2018 19:29

Even if the jab doesn't stop you getting flu, there is a lot of evidence to show it lessens the severity.

TuckMyWin · 13/01/2018 19:30

Whatever you decide, just as an FYI Superdrug travel clinics will vaccinate children- including his sister's baby. I think they vaccinate from 6 months.

TuckMyWin · 13/01/2018 19:32

Ah sorry, just caught up on the thread and see you know that - and it's your sister, sorry!

londonista · 13/01/2018 19:33

I have heard the nose spray doesn't cover the Aussie flu strain. My googling is inconclusive. What have people been told? I have an at risk 7 year old, and my husband says he wriggled so much he wasn't sure how much actually hit its mark. Am thinking of getting him jabbed again. He is asthmatic.

dementedpixie · 13/01/2018 19:36

Nasal spray does cover Aussie flu. It actually covers 4 strains rather than the 3 strains in the most usual injected one

londonista · 13/01/2018 19:39

Thanks Pixie. Am wondering if I shouldn't get him sprayed again though. Am paranoid about flu - he is still at an age where fingers are in mouths a lot (and not their own 😳!)
Think I will ring the nurse on Monday and ask.

NoTeaForMe · 13/01/2018 19:44

I understand that you and the Dad feel differently about this but I don’t see how you can go behind his back and get your son vaccinated. I would be livid if I was him. You have to talk to him and decide together.

dementedpixie · 13/01/2018 19:46
