That pineapples don't grow on trees, but grow in the ground? I'm well educated, went to university (twice), but I had never thought about where my pineapple had come from, and it never occurred to me that the 'chopped' end was on the bottom and not the top!

What didn't you know until recently?

About a year ago, the penny dropped that we don’t have six months on summer time and six month of winter time. Blush

Here’s my favourite bit of trivia that most people don’t seem to know... Roads; there are none in the City of London. There are Streets, Avenues, Passages and the like, but no Roads. (It works better when you say it.)

And to anyone who feels the need to criticise others for ‘ignorance’; do try to resist the urge, just be satisfied with your intellectual superiority.

There are various stories about how the apes got to Gib, but it seems fairly conclusive that they are of African rather than European origin.

They mostly stay on the Rock Nature Reserve but occasionally venture down into the town to pull windscreen wipers off cars.

They don't stray outside Gibraltar into Spain because none of them have passports so aren't allowed to cross the border Wink.

GladAllOver · 09/01/2018 09:31

Some people actually believe that Brexit is going to be good!

JCo24 · 09/01/2018 09:36

Furiouslh Google’s pineapples, cashews and other weird growing plants

LinoleumBlownapart · 09/01/2018 09:46

Did you also know bananas are very SciFi... They're all clones..

Just to clarify the ones you see in European supermarkets are a clone, or crossbreed from different types of natural banana. Naturally bananas come in a huge variety of types and flavours, not all bananas are clones. Mangoes and Papaya also have a variety of types and flavours too. Some mangoes can be eaten with the skin on. I didn't know that until I was in my 30's.

LinoleumBlownapart · 09/01/2018 09:48

What the hell do you people do all day long? The ignorance is astounding

I watch pineapples grow, blink and you miss it Wink

I'm from Liverpool, what's with the Liverpool reference up thread? Now I'm intrigued Grin

DadDadDad · 09/01/2018 10:06

I think the Liverpool thing was a reference to the fact that it is on the same line of longitude as Edinburgh.

The other geographical quirk of Liverpool is that the Mersey gets narrower as it reaches the sea.

DadDadDad · 09/01/2018 10:11

I just had a look and it seems Edinburgh is about 7 miles further WEST than Liverpool.

LordSugarWillSeeYouNow · 09/01/2018 10:16

Thank you :) well I never knew that :)

Think I need to brush up on my local knowledge a little bit dad

skippingdolefully · 09/01/2018 10:25

If you have trouble remembering what 7 x 8 is, just think of 5 6 7 8, ie 56 = 7 x 8.

6 pages in and no ones mentioned baby vests yet?! I’m impressed!

DreamyMcDreamy · 09/01/2018 10:35

See, this is why I love this type of thread.I used to be guilty of thinking pineapples grew on trees (I too blame Black Lace Grin ) but was educated by a similar thread a few years ago.
I've learnt something new from this thread again - I had no idea eating cherry stones could cause cyanide poisoning and kill you! [shocked]
OK, I knew not to eat them as they weren't edible, but definitely not to tht extent!

DadDadDad · 09/01/2018 10:46

Ceri - sod baby vests, I'm wondering why the petrol indicator on car dashboards myth hasn't come up yet! Grin

chatwoo · 09/01/2018 11:03

that's pretty cool with the cashew and brazil nuts. there was something I found out about the other way which was surprising for me (in a 'where does it grow' type way) but damned if I can remember what it was! Grin

KatharinaRosalie · 09/01/2018 11:09

petrol indicator on car dashboards myth
what myth? All my cars have an arrow that shows on which side the cap is, that's not a myth that many (but not all) cars have it.

lougle · 09/01/2018 11:37

I was about to say that I know that cows lie down when it's going to rain, but what I don't know is how they know that it's going to rain. But apparently, having Googled, they don't lie down when it's going to rain. They are just having a lie down ShockBlush All these years!

OutToGetYou · 09/01/2018 11:43

The "myth" is that the side in the little picture that the nozzle is, shows which side the tank is on. It does not.

Some cars have a little arrow showing which side the tank is on though. Mine doesn't but I have driven cars which did. People who have those assume the myth is not a myth as their cars have an arrow, those of us without an arrow know that the nozzle picture myth is, indeed, a myth,.

And all totally pointless anyway as the dispenser hoses will work on either side of the car so you don't really need to know which side it is.

OutToGetYou · 09/01/2018 11:44

@lougle - the cow thing is more of an old wives' tale I think.

RestingGrinchFace · 09/01/2018 11:46

I actually thought it was fairly obvious. I mean why on earth would they come from a tree? But then again they do look pretty weird, I guess if you've lived your whole life in Britain then it may not be so intuitive.

DadDadDad · 09/01/2018 11:49

Katharina - I was being a bit provocative saying "myth", but normally someone comes on these threads saying the dashboard arrow always shows which side the petrol cap is, then someone else says "not on my car".

So, as you've pointed out, it's some but not all cars.

DadDadDad · 09/01/2018 11:50

Or what OutToGetYou said! Grin

OutToGetYou · 09/01/2018 11:57

Have we skipped "Walkers salt and vinegar crisps used to be in the blue bags", no they didn't, etc etc?

TsunamiOfShit · 09/01/2018 12:06

I actually thought it was fairly obvious. I mean why on earth would they come from a tree? But then again they do look pretty weird, I guess if you've lived your whole life in Britain then it may not be so intuitive.

When I was little and drew palm trees I used to add some pineapples hanging from them, in the same way coconuts do. So that's how I thought they grew.
