To ask if there is a decent alternative to cow's milk to go in my latte?

Need to cut dairy from my diet as it makes me feel like crap.

Have been entirely successful except for finding another kind of milk to go in my occasional takeaway latte.

Can't have soya either, I don't buy milk or dairy substitutes to use at home so I've no idea what tastes nice.

Is there a decent tasting alternative I can readily order at a coffee shop?

I much prefer almond or hazelnut milk in my lattes the nuttiness adds another level of flavour to the drink. I hear good things about coconut milk but I personally don’t like coconut so wouldn’t work for me.

Bitchywaitress · 08/01/2018 07:55

Try Oat milk. I can hardly tell the difference!

gettingbacktoresearch · 08/01/2018 07:55

I love coconut milk lattes but I'm a big fan of Bountys Grin

SevenOf1981 · 08/01/2018 07:55

Starbucks have just started offering oat milk lattes which I really like!
They do other milks too, but can't remember right now. Almond maybe...
Also, a MNetter mentioned oatly barista milk to use at home. I've been keeping my eye out but have yet to find it!

LoniceraJaponica · 08/01/2018 07:57

Hazelnut milk is horrible unless you like hazelnuts. Oatly Barista is supposed to be nice. I tried unsuccessfully to find some yesterday.

AntiHop · 08/01/2018 07:58

Almond. Heat up the milk slightly before adding to coffee to stop it curdling. Try the one with a tiny bit of honey added. Brand is pip and nut.

RavingRoo · 08/01/2018 07:58

Almond milk is nice. Some places like Starbucks or Taylors might have a hidden stock of oat milk, or hemp milk; just ask.

wherethevioletsgrow · 08/01/2018 07:59

Oatly Barista or Blue Diamond Almond Barista. Both 'thicker' than their normal counterparts so no curdling takes place.

Mama05070704 · 08/01/2018 08:01

Coconut or oat milk. Proper coconut milk doesn’t actually taste like coconut IMO (I also use it to cook with).

Schroedingerscatagain · 08/01/2018 08:05

Does anyone use rice milk?

I’m in the same position needing to remove dairy but have allergies to tree nuts and oats (coeliac) I’ve used soya but don’t like it particularly and have wondered about rice milk for cooking?

wherethevioletsgrow · 08/01/2018 08:13

You could try rice milk although I find it a little bit 'thin' for hot drinks. But it's delicious in porridge because it has a natural sweet taste, so for desserts, I think it would work really well.

RavingRoo · 08/01/2018 08:16

Is rice milk high in arsenic?

FlouncyDoves · 08/01/2018 08:18

Have it black!

kaykay72 · 08/01/2018 08:18

We were in our local Starbucks yesterday, they had posters up for their range of non dairy lattes made with oat, almond, or coconut milk. Costa have just launched a range of drinks made with coconut milk, including latte and hot chocolate :-)

restingbemusedface · 08/01/2018 08:25

Almond is nice and sweet and heats up well.

Avoid rice milk, arsenic content.

LadyPenelopeCantDance · 08/01/2018 08:26

Another vote for coconut. Pret’s coconut lattes seem sweet which I really like.

Coastalcommand · 08/01/2018 08:27

Hemp milk lovely too.

goodbyeyellowbrickroad · 08/01/2018 08:29

Oat milk is the best substitute I’ve found. I find almond milk a bit too sweet.

QueenJulian · 08/01/2018 08:30

Pret’s coconut lattes are rice and coconut milk (I asked), very little coconut in them actually. Oatly barista is great but good luck finding it in stock if ordering online!

Floisme · 08/01/2018 08:30

I had a similar thing, tried a couple of dairy substitutes which frankly tasted disgusting (sorry everyone) and in the end took a deep breath and switched to espresso. It was a bit of a shock at first but I cannot abide milky coffee now. But you do need a coffee shop that uses the right beans for making espresso. And yes I know I sound right up my own arse but hear me out - if they mainly serve lattes and cappucinos they may use quite a harsh coffee. Not good. You basically need a nice hipster.

Sparklyshoes16 · 08/01/2018 08:52

I was going to recommend rice milk but having just learned from this thread that it has arsenic in it that's out!! Shock had no clue about it!! So my 2nd choice would be coconut milk the good ones don't have a strong smell of coconut.

ChickenPaws · 08/01/2018 08:55

Oatly Barista can’t be beaten as it’s specially made for coffees.

Sainsbury’s often run out, but tesco always seem to have it in.

Zeitgei5t · 08/01/2018 09:01

I like Oatly Barista. I get mine from Morrison's.

LoniceraJaponica · 08/01/2018 09:32

If rice milk contains arsenic why is it so widely available?

We eat a lot of rice in our house as well.

Jerseysilkvelour · 08/01/2018 09:36

Thanks everyone! Lots of suggestions. Might get myself to Starbucks and try an oat latte, used to get oat milk for my dairy intolerant child.

I'd heard there are different versions of non dairy milks the coffee shops use, is the Oatly Barista one of those?
